Hi, Lonie! Slim Fast may be safe, but it may not be the best choice. I'll try to briefly explain what I have learned. My thyroid quit, so a lot of this is due to research after surviving lymphoma and learning to support my failing thyroid.
Slim Fast is mainly carbs. Not a problem if they were the best carbs with a low glycemic index. In other words, it is almost completely sugar carbs that pick up your metabolism and drop it like lead. This roller coaster causes your body to hold onto excess calories because it is stressing out all the time!
Second - the protein that is in the drink is a low quality protein. Soy products are only good for you if they are fermented (tofu and tempeh). Soy affects your thyroid function which is a big reason a lot of women struggle to lose weight.
Third - the fiber sources used for diet shakes can be low quality. Some sources of fiber cause your body to become dependent on the fiber source for normal bowel function. Natural psyllium is an adaptogen that helps you go or slow up, depending on what your body needs. I'm not sure what's in slim fast, but for the same cost, there are safer products available.
Fourth- If slim fast has a 'low carb' version, they are no doubt using artificial flavors and sweeteners in them. Splenda has been shown to decrease the good bacteria in your intestines. My daughter, 3 yrs old, was getting yeast infections all the time. When I read this in January, I took out all the splenda out of our home and her diet. She has only had one episode since!
Fifth - all the vitamins in it are not cold-pressed and don't have more than a 50% efficacy because of it. (for that matter, if you take a vitamin supplement, check to see that it disolves in water in less than 30 minutes - if not, you are literally throwing money down the toilet!)
I used a protein shake from Arbonne International and lost 20 pounds in 9 weeks. I also used a few other Arbonne weight loss products that really curbed my appetite, especially during snack time of my kids. Arbonne's supplements and shakes are lactose free, gluten free, no artificial sweetners (stevia leaf extract and fructose are used instead), no artificial colors or flavors or preservatives(real chocolate and real vanilla are used), no saturated fat/trans fat/cholesterol. The protein sources is a pea protein instead of soy - a more complex protein structure without the negatives of soy.
So GLAD that you run a daycare! I did in-home for a year before my home biz. I tell you, it was the single hardest job I have ever had!!! My hat's off to you - wonderful!
write me back if you want more info or clarification,
