Slimfast...do You Think It Contains Too Much Sugar (Too Sweet)?

Hi moms, HAPPY NEW YEAR! I'm probably like many, ready to get healthy (exercise, eat better, do better) for the new year. Yesterday I bought some slimfast shakes (Slimfast Optima Milk Chocolate). I had one in the afternoon and one this morning (seems to have kept me full)...but I'm concerned about the amount of sugar...it was very sweet! 30g of Carbs, 18g of sugar?? At one time I considered myself a 'chocoholic', but goodness, this is almost too chocolaty & sweet. I'm sure I'll have to try the vanilla and strawberry. For those of you who have tried Slimfast, just wondering what your thoughts were and if there are other products on the local market that you've tried that might be a little more sugar friendly. What about Atkins? I'm sure some of you may want to respond about your MLM products you sell for your home-based business, but I'm not looking for those kinds of products, thank you. I too used (very recently) had a home-based business where I sold and used nutritional shakes and bars. Right now I'm just looking for what is sold at the stores. Thank you

I thought Slimfast jacked my sugar up and then I fell fast and hard.

But 30 g. of carbs isn't a lot. When I was pregnant and had diabetes, I had 60 g of carbs for a meal and 30 g for a snack.

No suggestions. I think there are probably better food plans out there. Eating according to the food pyramid with all the veggies and fruits might be healthier and easier to maintain.

But I'm not an expert.

Hi M.. B, Happy New Year. And what a great way to start it off. I also have done the Slim Fast. The Chocolate was the only flavor I liked. The strawberry and the Vanillia tasted to powdery for me and the chocolate gave me that Chocolate fix as one of the other moms said. I drank a shake in the morning had a salad or another kind of healthy lunch and then another shake between lunch and dinner. And then had like a healthy snake if needed after that (but not always). Good Luck

Hi M. B,
I have used Slimfast in the past and it worked for me along with watching the other foods in my diet. I'm not sure about the sugar content being to high. I guess you would have to add the slimfast sugar to the sugar in the other foods you are eating and see what the result is at the end of the day. I have done the Atkins diet and it worked too, but I got really tired of not eating bread, pasta and having to eat meat and salad all the time. If you want a lower carb diet you should try South Beach. It seems more balanced. If you are looking for a place to track what you eat and how much you exercise and to help you to stay motivated, try sparkpeople.com. It's free and you can track all that stuff, join teams and connect with others trying to get fit.

Forget about the sugar, have you read what other garbage is in them? They are very unhealthy. If you truly are looking to make better food choices, go look at whole foods or maybe even a vitamin store but I would not opt with slimfast. They are horrible for you. Sorry for being so abrupt, just being honest. Kudos to you for trying to lose weight.

While they might seem like a great quick fix for hunger, in the long run you will have to actually learn how to eat. So why not start with that. If you need a support system and can' t afford expensive groups try something like TOPS, if you can afford a little more do weight watchers. Make sure you exercise and take it slow. Also do you have sugar sensitivity? If so these shakes will definitely set you up for failure. They also cost alot for what they are. You are better off getting nutients from real food.

I opted for Weight Watchers. Started in October and lost 25 pounds. I eat what I want within reason. Portion control and caloric control.

Skip the Slim Fast.

Slimfast? Tried this many years ago. Works for a time and then you gain more weight back because you don't learn how to eat properly and they are not balanced. I know you don't want to hear about MLM, but you may be missing out. There are products out there that are balanced according to the GLYCEMIC index. I have used one and lost 6 pounds in two weeks and only replaced one meal a day, instead of two. Maybe you could re-think this? If you do, look into Shaklee, a company that does everything by the book and more so than even the government requires. Good luck to you and a healthy new you in 2009. : )

I lost 35 lbs with them last year alone. I still drink them when I'm having a sweet craving...I drink the original though as I don't like the protein after taste. Since it tastes like chocolate milk I feel like I'm getting a little treat. YUM!

I agree, 18 grams of sugar is alot. Try Spirutein protein shakes. They have just 9 grams of sugar, but taste great. Lots of different flavors as well, so you won't get bored. Probably a lot more nutritional value than slimfast too. Add 3 tablespoons of flax oil (a day)to burn fat. You can find spirutein at any health food store like vitamin world or GNC, etc.

I think 30 g of carbs is way too much -- I like to drink the Atkins brand of shake for breakfast in the morning. I have them less for a diet reason and more just for a small, easy breakfast that has protein. I'm not a big breakfast eater, its always a busy time of day for me, and this way I make sure that I have something, and the protein holds me for a long time. They have artificial sweeteners but I like the taste of the Atkins brand and I havent liked lots of the other ones I've tried. They aren't cheap, but they make me feel good consistently which is huge for me. At Target they are usually $5 for a 4 pack. When I have a 10% off coupon from the Target visa then I buy the whole shelf and store them at home. Good luck!

I do think Slimfast contains too much sugar, and a lot of cards for a single drink! I have tried Atkins, and actually prefer them, the Mocha one made me a bit jittery since I am not a huge caffiene drinker. I found them to be the cheapest at Target.
Good Luck!

For something that doesn't raise your blood sugar the way sugar does, try the Atkins Endulge bars. They are somewhat expensive but don't cause that spike in blood sugar that leads to hunger. We buy them at Sam's club. Atkins makes different bars but the Endulge really keeps the blood sugar steady. We have tried them all. Good Luck. BTW I recently read an article that stated there is a little hunger switch that is turned off in your brain when you eat food, not drink liquids, and that is why people using plans such as weight watchers, nutrisystem and other "food" plans are more successful in the long run.

M..B- Please do not waste your money on the OTC shakes, they all contain too much sugar, artificial sweeteners, which actually make you eat more and gain weight. Don't drink your calories, but rather eat them which will provide more nutrients, minerals, vitamins etc, your body needs. Aim for the 3-2-1 method, 3 meals per day, 2 snacks and at LEAST 1 liter of water per day (Preferrably drink half of your body weight of water in ounces-so if you weigh 150, you'll drink 75oz of water). If you want good bars, Lara Bars are excellent, RAW Revolution, which can be eaten as a meal replacement, both contain REAL food and clean foods with no added fillers or artificial sweeteners. The buzz word for 2009 is FIBER, aim for 25-35g of fiber per day. www.fiber35diet.com is a good source, she also has shakes and bars that are clean and good for you. You can find most of her products at Whole Foods or online at www.vitacost.com or www.vitaminshoppe.com as well as the bars I mentioned above.

Good Luck!
