Smooth-legged Ladies, I Need Your Help: Waxing Question

I am needing some advice on waxing my legs.

First off, let me say that I have thick, dark hair on my legs. (Thanks to both of my hairy parents.) I hate shaving because the grow-out is prickly and razor rash is often. Won't even talk about the chafing of the thighs. In any case, I haven't shaved my legs for a couple of years and my awesome husband is fine with it. Decided to try waxing this summer, and am having a hell of a time.

I used the Parissa pre-waxed plastic strips. Used FOUR BOXES of them and still didn't get even the bottoms of my thighs completely done.

I used the Sally Hansen Brazilian wax (no, I wasn't putting it *there*... yikes!) and while I am getting more economy from this product, I also end up feeling like I did the mambo with a tube of Superglue when I finish. AND I've done two sessions with this product and haven't gotten much farther than with the Parissa. This is an 1.5-2 hr investment thus far, this time.

So tell me, which products work best? This evening I have lost all hope and am on the brink of deciding that it would be less of a burden to just buy a few pairs of linen pants, grow my legs back out and call it good. Which I would be fine with at this point. (and, as I have said before, my husband really doesn't care.) Is there any hope? :(

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Since it's been asked, no, I haven't tried a professional.

Judging from the answers thus far, it sounds like this is a job best left to a professional. I did a little online research-- thanks for steering me in the right direction. I'll investigate the laser options too. Maybe time to save my pennies-- I just hate dealing with it.

I am now thinking that my adventure in this so far has been pretty comical.
Ah, Riley-- that's hysterical. :) Someone should really do a graphic novel called "Adventures in Beauty-- It Ain't Pretty".
And yes, Grandma T, it's dumb. It's all dumb. However, I would like to wear short without someone thinking they've experienced a Sasquatch sighting, ha ha.

Definitely a professional. I tried to wax myself once. Once. The attempt involved liquor and eventually scissors to remove the wax.

I dont do my thighs except for summer, and I do NAIR there because it works the best for me. Otherwise I shave my calves and knees EVERY morning because I wear dresses and skirts every day.

Waxing sucks, I've gone that route, I think it's dumb.

Have you consider laser hair removal? You sound like a really good candidate, H.. I had mine done and it is just wonderful. It removes 90% of the hair. You do have to stick with it and do it enough to work, but no more shaving, no more stubble - just smooth legs. Really nice!

It's expensive, but I felt like it was worth it. I have an esthetician in my dermatologist's office do it. (Professional, no tipping, a doctor on the premises in case of a problem, which I did have one time and was prescribed medicine for it. Kept doing the laser treatment after it cleared up and no more problems.)

I have waxed and it hurt so blankety-blank bad that I couldn't continue. The laser was SO much better, and it's permanent.

Try a professional...and I hope you have a very good experience with them.

I use a razor for quick clean-ups, but I have a Braun Epilator which I find very comfortable to use. Using an epilator can take some getting used to. The sensation when you use it is not very pleasant, and can be a little painful. I overcame the discomfort over 4-5 uses, and have been using one for the past nearly 10 yrs happily.

If you find that painful as well, and don't like waxing too, guess you can try those chemical hair-remover products? They're pretty quick and easy to use, but do have a short-term result..

Have you tried an epilation cream, like Nair?

Laser hair removal is cheaper in the long run. Save up for it! If you want to wax I recommend going to a salon if you have thick hair. It will cost more but you will get a better result. And if you are using a lot of product at home it may not be that much more to do it!

Oh, definitely go to a professional. If you have a European Wax Center, or similar place nearby, go there. Basically, go on Yelp and search for waxing - you want a place where waxing is all they do (not a nail place, or a hair place, where they have a waxing table in a closet in the back!). The places dedicated to waxing will use high quality wax, and their staff will know what they're doing. Once you've found such a place, check the reviews for the person who has the most positive feedback. They'll be quick, and as painless as the process can be. And don't worry, the first time is ALWAYS the worst and most painful. After that, it gets much easier as long as you keep going back every 4 weeks. :)

Thanks for asking this question. It's been on my mind as well. My hair is very thick, coarse and dark. So the cream products don't do anything for me. I leave it on for way longer than called for and barely a fraction of the hair is removed. I have an epilator but I cannot get used to the pain/discomfort no matter how much I grit my teeth/keep trying/curse my way through the sessions. I don't have any advice but I think I am going to go visit a professional wax service. Good luck.

I had my legs and bikini area lasered 11 years ago.
It took 4 or 5 sessions.
It was worth every penny!
I have a little invisible peach fuzz that I shave once or twice in the summer just for that smooth feeling.
Not needing to fuss with razors / shaving cream / wax / depilatory creams on my legs has been WONDERFUL!
No cuts, no razor burn, no ingrown hairs, no irritation, no pain!
Go see a laser hair removal place and see what they say.

I would suggest getting them professionally waxed or sugared the first time, that way the upkeep is a little easier. I like the Nair Wax Strips, but my husband bought me a Remington Smooth and Silky Epilator I have been using instead.
