I bought a $30 pair of snap pliers from Kamsnaps.com and I put snaps on all of the socks and they get snapped together before they go into the dirty clothes.
Do any of you moms out there have any advice on how to tackle an overflowing laundry basket of socks? Do any of you have an easy system that works for keeping socks from getting lost?
I bought a $30 pair of snap pliers from Kamsnaps.com and I put snaps on all of the socks and they get snapped together before they go into the dirty clothes.
I keep a basket of safety pins by the dresser (out of the way so O can't get them) and when they are used I pin them together or two pairs together and wash them that way. I haven't lost a sock in 10 months by doing this.
We keep a Sock Basket in the living room. Every week, as the laundry gets done, I dump them all in the basket and then go through it and pair them up. With six people in the house, I gave up trying to sort them out years ago, so we just leave them in the basket and everyone takes what they need in the morning.
I try to purchase all of the same socks for me and our daughter.. same for my husband.. I purchase them at Costco.. This way all of the footie ones are the same and my husbands black socks are all the same.. This way there is a lot less searching for matching pairs. Our daughter loves the footie style and does purchase the colored ones.. The good news is she does not mind wearing mixed colors every once in a while. They are still that same style as the whites..
If there is a "fun pair" I make sure in the dirty clothes we fold over the ankle cuffs.. when they get to the washer we know we have a pair and then they go straight to the washer.. then dryer..
I have a really good friend that says some day, she wants to have a "missing sock party." Everybody would be invited to bring the "1's without partner socks" and see if we could put together pairs..
There are only 2 of us when our daughter is not here and I am still amazed how many socks we loose each year..
I have tried safety pinning the pairs together.
We always put the socks together by turning them inside out/over eachother at the cuff and then to the hamper. It helped but not so good for really little kids. I had a huge hamper or laundry basket full of orphan socks too! About twice a year I would have a "sock adventure" and match them all up again. What an amazing pile of socks we would have. Sometimes I think there is a sock fairy that takes them to who knows where!
It does help to pair them after drying - and put them away in pairs. They just seem to get lost!
My 6 and 8 year old boys now match and fold socks as part of their chores to earn their allowance. They started about 3 months ago and it's a big help!
I got a little mesh bag that is usually used for woman's lingerie. I put all our socks in there and put it in the washer and dryer that way. Since I started that I haven't lost any socks in a long time.
I wear trousser socks and have gotten in the habit of putting them into a mesh laundry bag after I wear them. Then on laundry day, I just go straight into the washer.
Hubby wears all the same kind, my oldest wears all the same kind. I buy them in large packages. Easy to sort that way.
Are you using a front loading machine. A lot of socks get trapped in the plastic inner ring. I now check it after every load to make sure nothing is in there. I wash the little baby socks in a zippered garmet bag, my favorite one is from Toys R Us/Babies R Us. Lots of room. I stop using it once the socks get too big. I have a 9, 6 & 15 month old plus hubbie and I. I just throw the orphan socks in the drawer and eventually the mate shows up.
Zippered mesh laundry bags are a pretty good way to keep them from getting lost if you can train everyone to use them. I have several and clean socks stay in the bag...easy to pull out a pair when needed.
I've used them since my daughter was born. She had a basket for her shoes and she puts all her dirty socks in there too so it is easy for her to gather them up and get them ready for the laundry.
I search around the area where the basket of laundry is for lost socks and other things that can fall out of the basket. Once the socks are washed and dried, I roll them up together once i match them. That way they do not wind up getting lost in the dresser drawer. Good luck.
Everyone's laundry is done separately so no mixing of laundry.
Also, we all have different brands, styles, lengths of socks. Short white, short black, long white, etc. The different types stand out from each other.
Loose ends go in a basket after 1 or 2 washes, and if the basket doesn't yield any more pairs when rooms are cleaned, they become dusting mitts.
I didn't read your prior posts. My "easy" system is about every 4-6 months I throw out all the old socks and buy everyone 2 big bags of new socks. I can't stress about trying to find matching socks! And everyone gets white. Myself and oldest daughter wear the same size so we have solid white. My younger daughter wears white with pink heals and toes. My hubby wears white with grey heals and toes and so does our little son. That way I can tell whose are whose. But when I can't, I toss ALL of them and we all get new ones! Good luck!
I don't know what you do, and I don't know this is the perfect solution, but I sit down once every two weeks realistically with the "sock basket." I sort out the colors and sizes and then fold each pair together with one top of the sock over the second sock.
According to out washing machine repair guy - the washing machines does eat the socks sometimes - at least it appears to:). With top loading machines apparently socks can slip underneath and get caught int he motor. When that happens they get cut up by the motor and eventually discarded so you may still lose socks in the wash. I've been thinking of washing them in bra bags but honestly don't know I have the extra time to do that. Hope you get some good ideas on here:)
well, i have a friend who numbers his socks on the bottom toe area. that seems to help him.
When I do the laundry, I leave the socks for last. Whenever I come across socks while folding, I throw them in a pile. At the end I try and pair all the socks together. The ones that have no matches I put them in a basket on the top shelf, above my washer. Whenever I do laundry again I always come across some more single socks and I sometimes find them in the lonely sock basket on top. Sometimes I don't and they just get added into the basket. It has worked out pretty good.
Before, during, or after laundry? One thing hubby and I decided soon after having kids is that we will NOT make everyone keep their socks in their respective dressers. We have a "sock basket". Each person has a different 'brand' of socks...hubby's socks have a green seam in the toe. Older son has "hanes" in blue stitching on the bottom, younger son has "hanes" in green stitching. Mine have a pink heel. When the whites come out of the dryer, I match them all up - very easy work since they are all color-coded, and they are then kept all together in the "sock basket". When someone needs a pair of socks, they just grab one of theirs and go. It has worked well for us.
With lots of socks they are bound to get lost but we all have a habit of putting things where they go..They do get lost I let them sit out the lost pairs till all laundry is complete house is cleaned and if there not found they go into the trash or dads garage as rags.I don't fret over them being lost...
Go without lol. I just keep buying cheap pairs and toss them in the drawer together, they usually lose their elasticity after a while anyway. My husband has to match them up and put them in the drawer.
My daughter actually wears little mismatched socks! They come in packages of 3, ALL different and I dont bother sorting at all. If one gets lost Ill never know lol.
When my little one was a baby we would find her socks in the pockets of our clothes, in the sheets, on the floor, behind the drier...everywhere! And, like other women suggested, I started safety pinning them together. Worked well. Now, I only buy myself black socks, my husband white work socks or wool socks for winter. This way, even when I loose one it doesn't matter, because they all look the same.
I put the owners initial on the bottom of the sock, and always try to buy the same kind so pairing up is easier. I also have a 'sad sock' bag where I put any socks that are sad (because they are lonely), every few loads of laundry I go through the bag looking for pairs and it usually shrinks quite a bit :)
for baby socks, those mesh zipper laundry bags work great. Hanes puts a different color writing on the bottom of theirs. I think My hubby's are red, I'm pink and my daughter is light blue.
