My daughter slept with an earring in her ear and it split her ear lobe.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, we just got back from urgent care. The scar tissue has already healed, so we need to see a plastic surgeon. Thanks to all who responded. I will make sure that she takes care of it so that it doesn't get infected.

Get her to urgent care or the ER unless she can wait to see the doctor until Monday. She needs stitches, but it can be in in-office procedure that's pretty simple. She won't even scar from it.

I'm guessing something else besides sleeping with earrings in tore her ear lobe. It takes a really traumatic occurrence for a tear to occur... simply going to bed with earrings in won't do it.

I personally would not trust an ER dr to stitch it up properly.

Things like this can get tricky and it is best to use a plastic surgeon who is a specialist.

I had a small lump on my thigh that needed removed and my Dr. suggested a plastic surgeon because they can work wonders so there is little to no scar. To this day, 6 yrs later, you cannot see where the lump once was.

How, did her ear split while sleeping?
It takes a real yank on it to split an earlobe.

At this point, I would look out for infection.
What are you doing for that?
Did you take her to the Doctor and have the injury evaluated?

The ear lobe is split. By the time you get referred to a Plastic Surgeon and see one or whatever, the ear injury meanwhile, will be existing.... And still split and/or the tissues attaching itself together. Already. And as it heals or reattaches itself, you can't predict how it will look or the scabbing of it or whatnot.

Anyway, for now, make sure the ear lobe injury does not get infected.
What are you doing for the injury?
The care of it?

Sleeping in earrings might cause tears depending on how densely pierced her ears are.
I've seen a few that resemble Swiss cheese and there's just not much tissue to work with.
Take her to a plastic surgeon and get her some reconstructive earlobe surgery.
I wouldn't trust an ER to stitch her up so that the lobe comes out even or looking right - it might, but it might not - it's not their specialty - they just help stop the bleeding.
Have her take a break from the earrings for awhile.
Many can wear earrings again after 4 or so months after the ear has completely healed.

If it is still bleeding then she will need to go to the urgent care to get stitches in her ear.

If it's not bleeding? Alcohol wipe it down, put the small band-aid on it and let it heal. DO NOT let it get infected. That will be bad!!

Good luck!!
