what is it? and where does the term originate? not necessarily a parenting question but those of you who are hipper/ and or have teens and tweens might have a finger on this pulse. I came across the term when looking up octopus hats.

Thanks,
F. B.

It's a science-fiction from what I understand, it's like victorian era tools to create advanced technology.

It can look very cool, but is kinda ridiculous in a fun way.

There's a steam punk festival around here. Don't know about the origination, but I don't think this is necessarily a teen/tween thing -- at the festival most people are adults. It's a fun event.

LOL. Steampunk is a fashion mixing industrial (steam generated) with victorian fashion or wild west. I think it's a pretty cool look myself. It's based on some alternative reality movies/books or post apocalyptic video games/movies/books. Imagine corsets with bustles and ____@____.com boots with metal detailing.

I LOVE steampunk fashion! It is very distinctive and original.

Every year I consider making a steampunk-styled costume for Halloween... But it would take too much work to pull it off. :)

Oooooh, one of my best friends just costumed Alice In Wonderland, for a children's theatre, all in Steam Punk. Think Industrial Revolution colliding with Victorian Age....and meld the two styles togther....super interesting, borderline ugly but unique.

That's for clothes...the term is also used in the music industry for contemporary computer generated rhythms and fusion sounds. Which I also find very cool.

I LOVE Steam Punk and if I was even 20 years younger and didn't weigh as much I can guarantee I'd have some in my wardrobe and I'd find a place where like minded people gather for fun.

I think that we've seen quite a few movies over the last few years that have this sort of fashion in them. The first time I noticed it was in "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen". Peta Wilson played a scientist that was a vampire. She wore tiny hats with veils, chunky jewelry, long coats, and more. There were so may other little things like that in so many other movies too. Think about Wild Wild West. Will Smith wore some cool glasses, the other characters wore Steam Punk styles of clothes too.

I think it has really taken off and I LOVE it!

Everyone else has explained it pretty well but I just had to throw this in. A photographer friend of mine had me dress up in steam punk style & took a ton of pictures in a local cemetery & in the woods. They photos were awesome! I had such fun dressing up & love the look :-)

The first time I ever heard of Steampunk it was in an episode of Castle, and I seriously though it was made up for Castle....how wrong I was! Basically, it's like reimagining/romanticizing technology if it was run on steam like in the Victorian era. Lots of gears and clocks and tiny hats.
