Tall Women - Where Do You Shop for Pants?

My stepdaughter (age 29) constantly complains that she can't find pants that are long enough. She has a 36" inseam and is a size 10. I see a lot of tall women who are wearing nice clothes, so I admit that I don't have much patience for her complaints. I am 5'4" so don't have this issue, if anything, pants are usually a bit too long for me.

Is it that hard to find longer length pants? If you are tall, which are your favorite stores or websites?

Thanks!

"I don't have much patience for her complaints"? What an odd thing to be irritable about.

Being on the other end of the spectrum at 5', I absolutely believe it would be that hard to find longer lengths. Are you always this easily irritated by her?

The Buckle. They're pricey, but they have tall and extra tall sizes. I have a 35" inseam and am 130lbs. I go to the local swap shops and buy second-hand Buckle jeans, but if you buy directly from the Buckle, they'll hem them to size for free. I also buy from American Eagle.

I wouldn't be caught dead in a few of the brands mentioned below. My mother wears them though.

As a tall, thin woman with long legs for even my height, I have always struggled to find pants long enough. I am annoyed that you are annoyed with her. Geez. Sure, tall women can find nice clothes but it's not as easy as being a normal size 6 or 8 so as you said, you don't have this issue. So get over your annoyance. Sometimes Ann Taylor will have Long. Lands End makes a long that is just about long enough. Levi's jeans offers longs but usually not a big selection. Nordstrom's expensive suits are made with long pants to be tailored but perhaps your 29 year old SD can't afford that. Same with Brooks Brothers. You can get longer pants there for $300 or so a pair. Not nearly the choices you have at 5'4".

Yep, that is going to be a harder size to find. A lot of "longs" are still going to be too short for her, but extra long lengths do exist. I know Gap and Banana Republic make this length.

try thrift stores n goodwill-good decent clothes at the fraction of the price-i refuse to spend 50.00 on a good pair of jeans or pants-prices of clothes have gotten hideous to say the least-good luck

My daughter and I are both over 5'9". I wear Lucky Brand with the longer inseam and Joe's Jeans. Not cheap but I figure a pair of jeans will last a very long time.

My 16 year old finds Levi's work well, you can choose the length and waist so they fit her tall, skinny bod great.

I've found the higher end the jeans the more likely they are to be long. Also the cut really matters. My girl has slightly flared jeans that have to be long to look right but the skinny jeans look good whether long or a little short. She has skinnies she rolls up at the bottom to hit right above her ankle, cute with sandals. Good luck!

I purchase all of my work trousers from The Limited; on sale they are a steal and they wear like iron. I have some which are at least ten years old but still look great. They carry extra long in all sizes, including 10, and their hems are long enough you can easily let the trousers down even more with good results. I have some success with Banana Republic too but I don't like their prices as much and I think they tend to be trendier which in my mind means they fit tighter. Tight fit is a sin in my professional work mindset. I have to watch the styles at The Limited too because some of them are trendy/tight fitting.

The cost of alterations is cheap for me so I don't even worry about that part of it. Lined wool trousers can get screwy because the liner is not able to let down like the outside fabric. I don't think it affects the look if the liner is shorter than the outside fabric. However, I am not a fashionista so I make some of the fashion rules up as I go along. I don’t shop online because I try all trousers on with my work heels - to make sure they fit like I want them, drape like I want them to and have enough extra hem if they need to be let down. I can't comment on jeans since I never wear them. Good luck.

Like Brigett B said look for extra longs which are also available at American Eagle because my daughter buys them there. Also have her try at a jean store like Lucky Brand or the Buckle or even a department store like Nordstroms. Have her ask for help when trying the jeans on because the associates often know which jeans are available in the longer lengths and some can even be ordered by them on-line and shipped to you. I know there a lot more options out there now compared to when I was young!! I could never dry my pants and I was continually stretching them while they were wet hoping to make them just a bit longer!!

S.,

Dress Barn has long inseams. I'm 5'8" and find longer inseams here for me. However, I do NOT have a 36" inseam. How tall is she? 6'3"???

I also found this place...
http://www.alloyapparel.com/category/clothing/pants/37%22....
Alloy Apparel. I know my girlfriend and sister have shopped here. My sister is 6' and my girlfriend is 5'11". My niece is also 6'2" and wears skirts and dresses because she has a hard time with long pants...I know she developed sewing skills and made a lot of her own pants....

Good luck!

I am a stick figure--5'10" and 120 pounds--long legs and long arms...

I have a harder time in department store than I have in thrift stores because few women have my build and therefore the longer pants are rarely sold out in thrift stores.

I sometimes have to get the hem let down at the cleaners, but the price rounds out as I paid so little for them anyway secondhand.

She is 29!! She needs to go through trial and error, style preference and price preference in order to figure it out. I had a friend who went into every cheap mall store it seems like every week asking for the size zero long. Every time they would say they did not carry that size. Reading this post brought back that memory of her 'major' dilemma.

Some people want things to be tailored fit, yet forget the tailor part. My size 8 to 10 would fit, but not perfect (I was fine saving some money and having it be baggy in the waist). My thin friend's pants also seem way tighter than mine. We are both 5'9" so i think she needed the long more than be because she needed a smaller size. I'm not sure if the mall stores (H&M, Old Navy, The Limited, Express Banana, JCrew) make the item shorter if the size is smaller (for example a size 10 pant might be too long for a person 5'5" than for a person 5'8").

edit: I do not think JCrew and Banana are cheap.

The Limited has quite an extensive tall line as well as a petite. They are always running a sale so I NEVER pay full price. I just wait patiently for the sale and scoop up what I want. I love thier clothes.
