Tendenosis of the Hip

Last fall I started running again (not die hard or anything but more for exercise). Then our weather changed so I took it inside to the treadmill. Apparently I am one of those people that can't get a good gait on the treadmill and ended up injuring my hip. So after a round of steroids (oral) and lots of naproxen I ended up in physical therapy (actually two different rounds of PT). It has been 6 months and it is a lot better than it was but it is undeniably still there. Has anyone ever had something similar and did it EVER completely go away? I was basically given 3 options - 1) continue to hit it hard with more PT to strengthen (although I have a tight IT band and the stretch for it pisses it off more) 2) get the tendon injected with steriods to see if that will put it over the edge to heal 3) do nothing for a month and see what happens - just go about my normal business

Can anyone give me any hope?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

During my last PT evaluation they could not create the pain until they crossed the engaged leg across the body and then look out. Every other motion does not reproduce the pain. I am not sure they can exactly say because the pain is right where everything comes into the hip and connects so they can not say with 100% certaintly which is to blame.

One of my exercises was a hip flexor stretch and even weighted with 5 pounds I felt nothing while doing it.

Is it your hip flexor muscle? I messed mine up in the Marines when my ankle rolled the wrong way on a rough terrain hike. It never heals if that's what it is... I was told that by the officer at medical. It flares up randomly, a lot of times when I run a lot or when I'm going on long drives... last year it hurt SO bad in the theater that it was almost unbearable. You can try to do butterfly kicks where you lay on your back and lift one leg straight up and down and do the same with the other leg.. for me it actually causes it to flare up but it is hit and miss.

If it is your hip flexor muscle, which I believe they do call what your title says, then it won't heal and you'll need to watch out for your knee because if that is what your describing I have a tear in my knee because I favored the leg or something....(still trying to get the Marines to pay for it *rolls my eyes*)

Update:

It may be that though, I can't create the pain. Very true about that. When I messed up my hip I could barely get into my mustang without being in serious pain right where everything comes together at my hip. Just hope that that isn't what it is because it never fully heals... it sucks when it just randomly flares. A lot of times when I do hip flexor exercises and most of the time nothing happens, like I said mind of its own lol. Just cross your fingers it's not that lol. Sometimes they can do MRI when it is hurting to try and pinpoint where it is happening... do they plan on doing that with you? I believe they advised me with my hip condition to rest it... with what I have you can't strengthen it or whatever, you just try not to overdue it. So maybe you can try that if strengthening it doesn't work.

I have had great luck with cortisone injections (both hands for trigger finger, knee and foot) but never in my hip. It just might take the edge off though. I would try it if I were you.

I get hip pain and had therapy, but what they found out was that my left leg is slightly shorter and my right hip hurts. I buy 2 insoles and only wear them in the left shoe, every shoe, all the time (even in the house) and my pain went away. Have the PT do a thorough analysis of your dimensions and watch your gait, perhaps this is your problem as well (not many people are even but youth and flexibility make up for that until a certain age). My pain comes back occasionally, and only when at rest. Good luck.

My hip issue is a little different. I started going gungho with yoga in November 2009, doing it every day (without supervision or an expert) for 3mos. After no results/improvements, I started doing them 2x/day or whenever I could fit in a position, the first of Feb 2010. Two weeks later, my hip popped out of joint. It happened late at night, my chiro was still open and he got everything twisted back into place, told be to ice & pill pop for 24hours then call him back. It felt so good the next afternoon, I stopped all the ice/rest/Advil and it went out a few hours later.

I ended up at the MedExpress, who got me underway, and also found thru x-rays that I had swelling of tendons, bones and bursa sac and told me to see Orthopedic asap. They said it would take about 2-3wks before pain improved and they were right :(. This was really hard with my toddler son. I continued with PT for 3-4mos and saw some improvement, they gave me exercises to do at home after that and saw some more improvement. But my hip was never more than 85%.

In November 2010, I went back to Orthopedic who said I was doing everything I could, but he really recommended a cortisone shot to give it the extra umph it needed to heal (since I was never able to stay in bed for a month). I was reluctant because everyone I'd known who had a shot ended up needing them on a regular or annual basis ever since. The doc discussed this with me, and I decided to get the shot. Within 24hrs, all of the pain and soreness was gone.

I still get some tenderness when I overdo things, apply ice and pop some Advil. But nothing like it was before. In addition, my chiro started doing cold laser and I get that done with any adjustments.

Good luck!
