Over the years I have been called many things from weird to eccentric. And I have come to find it freeing to embrace such names however most of my ‘weirdness’ (as some people call it) stems from the fact that on any given night I can be found curled up on my favorite chair enthralled in some Christmas movie. Yes, it’s true I watch Christmas movies all year round! While most of you are shaking your heads and muttering ‘she’s is weird’ allow me to share another juicy fact about myself. I believe in Santa Claus. Yes, you read that right, no need to re-read it, I at 24 years old believe in the one and only Santa Claus. Okay now take a minute if you need to before continuing to read (I know I just dropped a big bombshell. Hehe), better yet? Okay, let me explain. Do I believe that on Christmas Eve there is a fat man in a red suit with flying reindeer travelling the world … no. But I do believe in the memories and emotions that he conjures where ever his name is mentioned or he is seen at the local mall. You see it’s my belief that anything that can produce such memories of the past or possibly the future has every right to be believed in no matter the age of the believer. So, basically even though I do not believe in the existence of the man himself I do believe in what he represents- peace, love, kindness. It’s the one time of year when even though we are all very stressed somehow we still manage to allow ourselves to feel that deep rooted connection to each other-family and strangers alike. But it’s also so much more! Everyday we are told what the standards are for us to live, be successful and even be happy but for once we all collectively throw standards out the window, say the hell with tomorrow lets make a snowman today! It is admittedly very hard to remember what the season does for the soul when it ends and this is why I can be found watching Christmas movies, to remind myself of all the joys and love we all have for ourselves and each other. Am I eccentric-oh heaven yes! Not only do I love Christmas movies but I also love water gun fights in the house, getting my hands dirty with paper Mache we did for fun and of course footie-pj movie night. The way I see it I have a gift, I was born with the ability to see that which has been forgotten or pushed away. I do not need a set date on a calendar to tell me its time to celebrate a cherished holiday; all I need is to look around me, at my friends, family, and strangers to see that the holiday season never truly ends. I know my beliefs and methods aren’t exactly mainstream but with so much mainstream who wouldn’t want to be different?
I am with you S.!!! I too believe for the same reasons. Deep down I guess I am still a kid. . Just came home from a Disney cruise. Oh did my inner child come out ffor a week! Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional! My husband too found his inner child.
Good for you! We're always told to embrace our 'inner child' and you seem to be able to actually do it! We all have some eccentricity or some 'gift', you are just right out there with yours, again- kudos.
As long as you are still able to be a productive member of society and meet real world obligations (knowing you do live in the current, real world!), then have a blast. My family loves the movie Elf, which no doubt you have seen. :-)
That is the best piece of short prose I've read in a long while. Seriously, you should be a writer. You should start writing short stories. I went through your other posts. Just beautifully written.

Thank you for sharing this, I think I needed to read it. I've been dreading Christmas this year, for all the wrong reasons. I hate dealing with the in-laws and fretting over what they'll get the kids, or what they'll say about what the kids get them. I hate going into stores from Thanksgiving on, and being around grouchy Christmas shoppers. I don't enjoy making thousands of Christmas cookies like my mother, I'd prefer to send the kids to her house to make cookies with her. I'd rather get my shopping done in October and then just curl up in a hole and hide until New Year's. So thank you for your post.
You could be worse! You're not going after people with weapons, you're not setting things on fire, you're not sending people anonymous nasty e-mails, you're not sitting on your roof with no clothes on and screaming at people. So what's a little extra Christmas among friends? (I watch Christmas movies year round, too.)
I, too, believe in Santa Claus and I'm 40+. I don't think you're weird or eccentric, but most of my family wouldn't agree!
I teach 2nd and 3rd grade Sunday school. Every year, we get a mix of kids questioning and wondering. I always tell them I still believe and share one of my favorite Christmas stories ...perhaps you'd like it too ...
