I tip 10% but divide that between the stylist and the person who washes my hair. I get my hair relaxed, so that might break down to $9 for the stylist and $3 for the person who washes my hair.
Do you tip the person that washes your hair before you go to your stylist for the actual cut?
I have started to do this at my downtown salon because I see others (not everyone) doing this.
Just want to hear from others and if you do - how much do you give?

I give the hair wash person a few $ and the hair stylist 10%
Curious what everyone else gives.
Definitely in a large market like Chicago do I do this. The shampooer who washes my hair will do a 10 minute scalp massage (even longer if my stylist is running a little late, which I never mind). I give her minimum $5. If my hair stylist washed my hair, I would not but only because I already tip her generously.
Ask your stylist...a lot of times they will share their tips with the people who do their shampooing...
We tip our hairstylist pretty generously (as she's the only one who's been able to properly cut my hubby's hair without it looking goofy, thanks to his Filipino-hair!). So, the entire tip will be on the 20% side, but if there's another girl that does the washing, she gets $1 of it, per person, since all of us sometimes have appointments in one outing. If our hairstylist does it herself, she gets to keep the whole amount.
Absolutely! I used to work at a salon, and yes, while the stylists usually share their tips, it doesn't always happen. My salon has a 15 minute hair wash with massage and a hot towel wrap, so I definitely give her a tip that's usually $5-8 depending on how good the massage was.
I worked in a salon in high school and washed peoples hair. Not everyone tipped, in fact it was rare that I did get tipped. When I did get a tip, it was between $2 and $3, now that was 15 years ago. I am not sure if it assumed to do or not, I would think anything they get would be appreciated but know it is not required.
