Toddler Undressing

My 23 month old undresses herself all the time. I don't have a problem with it when it's during the day and she leaves her diaper on. It's now started at night though, so when we go upstairs for the last check, she now has her diaper off (torn tabs so needs a new diaper). By that time she is asleep so we have to get her re-dressed and back to sleep now. She won't rock and fall asleep initially, so we have to put her down awake. She doesn't want anything to do with potty-training so she has to have the diaper. I am thinking of using diaper pins on her diaper or maybe one to keep her jammies on. Short of this, does anyone have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

LOL---Love the backwards jammies idea! I have been putting her in the 2 piece jammies because before she wasn't able to get her pants off. I never even thought about duct tape, but I am going to try that this evening. I put a onesie under her jammies everynight and last night I used a baby diaper pin through the snap part of the onesie so she couldn't get the snaps undone. (I don't think there is anyway she can get that undone since I also thought about the danger of it). Anyway, she didn't even disrobe last night so I don't know if she figured me out or if she was just too tired. :) Thank you for the suggestions!!!!

Dear J.,
Have you thought that her clothes might be irritating her? She could be allergic to something in the fabric. Some of my children were allergic to the perfumes in disposable diapers. Fabrics such as corderory, fleece, polyester etc. can irritate the skin. Also, you might try a detergent that is made for sensitive skin and see if that makes a difference.

Good Luck,
B.

HA! Up until yesterday it was working on my 21 month old to put the diaper on backwards- he go tout of tha tone yesterday.
Now I am going to try someof the suggestions on here for sure-
Packing tape didn't work, byt he way, either, so I will try the duct tape, onesies idea, and backwards jammies- too funny- can't wait (but he'll be mad!)

My friend put duct tape all the way around the diaper. Her kid couldn't get the diaper to budge.

My cousin had this same problem with his daughter. They used duct tape on the tabs so she couldn't tear them off.

Since my 2-1/2 year old daughter has been able to dress and undress herself, she has preferred to sleep with just a diaper on, even in the wintertime. When the clothes start coming off, she's ready to go to sleep! I was putting a Huggies Overnight diaper on her after she went to sleep and was able to put it on without her waking up. We use pull-ups during the day. The other day found the nighttime pull-ups at Target, which she has been keeping on at night. I was concerned when she wanted to sleep without anything on in the winter, but now just make sure her room is a comfortable temp year-round and that she has her blankets at least near her (and make sure there's a diaper/pull-ups on!).

Try one of the pull ups that are velcro on the sides (the pull-ups brand). That way if it's a clean one she is taking off, you can at least put the same one back on. It gets expensive to waste clean diapers. I'd be afraid to use the pins. If she is persistant to get it off, the pin may pop open and stick her. Ouch. Anyway, I hope this helps.

When my daughter went thru this stage we bought some pj's that zip or snap up the front and put them on backwards, so she couldn't reach the closures. Most of them had feet on them, which didn't really work backwards, so we cut those off. For summer, you could just cut them off shorter and take the sleeves off so she will be comfortable. It seemed to work and she was out of that phase in no time!

My daughter went through this and I know it can be aggravating but looking back (she is 10 down) I can only laugh! I had to keep an eagle eye on her especially when she was outside the house. The funniest place she stripped down was at the Van Gogh museum in the Netherlands, it wasn't funny at the time. Anyway, I let her know that the only time she could be naked was at the house and only around people who didn't mind. My mom hated it and so she couldn't run around naked at home if grandma was there. If she stripped in public we would put her in time out and we also used a reward board. She had a poster and every day that she was able to stay dressed during appropriate times she would get a sticker. Actually, I think I started this with a morning and evening sticker (two stickers a day) and when she reached a certain sticker number she would get a treat/toy/outing. My daugher loved the zoo and we had a membership so her prizes revolved around the zoo lots of time. Hope this helps and I promise you will laugh about this someday.
Take Care,
Tam

Oh yes I remember this phase. I just finished it with my two year old. There are several things that we did. I would put him to bed with a onesie on. This helped for a while until he realized he could reach up through the leg holes and undo his diaper. Then I tried using pull ups. He figured out how to get those off within a day or two. So then we tried using a small piece of duct tape over the tabs. He wasn't able to get that off. It was sticky enough that he could get it peeled up and pulled off. Good luck. Remember it is just a phase and eventually they do grow out of it.

My sister did this. My parent would go in and find her buck naked butt in the air asleep. First, take picture sometime. You can use it for blackmail later during trying times. :) It doesn't have to be an unclean pic. If you take it from the side you can see any private parts.

My mom always told us how they would at least get a diaper on her without disturbing her. Pretty much just pushed in b/t her legs and so in case she peed again. And just then just put a blanket over her. As if she did wake again, she'd just it again.. Overall, that phase didn't last much longer than 1 or 2 months. My sister would actually strip the entire bed and throw them one the floor.

It's summer now, so she could literally sleep naked and be fine. If you don't make a huge fuss over it, she'll get over whatever thing she's working on and move on.
