My mom used to eat tofu some.....i havent thought much about tofu myself. Well my husband came home from work the other day wondering if i could get some so we could try it. I have no clue. I am all for trying new things. And for sure if something is good for you. Thats why i am asking if it is good for you. We are not wanting to go all the way off of meat.....just add a little more health to our eats. We have already added a lot of salad, which we love

What can I do next?

Tofu is just as processed and packaged as any other processed/packaged food. It is made from soybeans, one of the most genetically modified and heavily sprayed crops on the planet. Roundup ready soybeans are GM'd to withstand heavy spraying so they are often covered in Roundup (an herbicide). It's pretty gnarly. Try to buy organic if you can!
Tempeh is fermented tofu. The type of soy most strongly associated with health benefits is fermented soy, commonly known as tempeh. You can slice it up and stir fry it, add some soy sauce and veggies. It's pretty good.

Vegetarians especially, use tofu as a protein (in place of meat). It's bland and tasteless and takes on the flavor of whatever you cook WITH it. So, it's protein, but if you're not eliminating other proteins from your diet, probably not necessary. The bad side--soy contains estrogens--may not be an issue for adults, but might be for smaller bodies. MODERATION!
Stir fry would be a good thing to try.

I LOVE tofu. I was raised as a vegetarian (and still am one). I have two ways that to cook it that I think are really good. First one is to take extra firm tofu and cut into small cubes. Pour some soy sauce on it and let it sit for a minute. Then dredge it in a mixture of flour, nutritional yeast, and garlic powder. Saute it in butter and olive oil until browned. So good. Tofu is also very good in stir-fry's. I have a couple of other ways to cook it too. Send me a message if you're interested in more ideas!

Tofu is a form of soy that you don't have to worry about hormone-wise IF you get the real, organic tofu. It's good for your digestive system because of the natural bacteria cultures in it, just like soy sauce being so good for your gut health. Naturally brined tofu, basically, would be what you're looking for.

I have used tofu in stir-fry and in skillet lasagna. It is very versatile.

I have heard (sorry, don't have the source readily available) that tofu (really, all soy products) can mimic estrogen, so there may be cause for concern about interfering with the endrocrine system.

Tofu is supposed to be pretty good for you. However, soybean farmers are having to chemically engineer the soybeans for pesticide resistance otherwise they lose funding and their farms can be shut down. Kind of a gray, red-tape area. But really, all the other food we eat are being engineered or fed hormones as well!

I also agree w Rebecca, it's best in stir-fry in my opinion, as it absorbs the flavor and the chunks are smaller. Could be good in chili, soups, spaghetti sauce and such too. I don't like larger pieces b/c of the texture. (Queen, I have also heard the estrogen thing.)

Tofu has no flavor at all, so I think it's best used as a substitute for ground meat in things that already have seasoning like spaghetti sauce and chili. I also like it in Asian dishes that are very flavorful and spicy. I don't think I would eat it all the time, but it's healthy for what it does NOT have in comparison to most meats - i.e. saturated fat and cholesterol.

Tofu , like any other protein(including meat) is pretty bland until you cook it with something. If i were you id look up recipes, but ill tell you one way i like it.

Get the firm kind and press the moisture out of it with a towel and a book, cut it into cubes, sizzle it in oil and agave nectar, light brown on two sides, add lemon and chives afterwards and toss it into anything or leave it alone and enjoy.(you can also toss it in barbeque sauce, sweet and sour sauce, tomato sauce etc..)

you can also scramble it with a little parm, and nutritional yeast and it takes the place of eggs.

Tofu is absolutely good for you, especially if you are replacing meat with it for a meal or two. It would of course be better to eat edamame(soy) pods all by themselves , but tofu is just fine and has no cholesterol or saturated fat.

ETA...as far as the farming of soy and the estrogen debate....theres really no comparing what the soybean goes through compared to what your typical farm animal does, as far as tampering, antibiotics, hormone injections and acidic adrenaline....JMO

Good for you, but avoid it if you have conditions like IBS or interstitial cystitis since soy is irritating.
