Ok, here I go. Hopefully no one will think this is a stupid question. I am asking for comments on what age you think is to old to trick or treat. I work for the government and therefore have lived all over the country and in every state it is different. We have been in Colorado since Aug and so this is will be the first Halloween for my kids. My younger one I know is fine but I have a 12 year old- 7th grader and a 15 year old- 9th grader who both want to go out. I am trying to tell the 9th grader that I think he is to old and I am not even sure if the 7th grader is not right at the point where she may need to stop. When we lived in Atlanta it was quite common to have high schoolers come to our door but in Tampa people seemed just about mortified when teenagers knocked on the door. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone would like to help me out on this I only have a week to decide. My 15 year old is quite upset that I am trying to tell him he cannot go and says that all of his friends at school are going out. How would you all respond to a 5'11/6'0 240 pound kid coming to your door (yes he is only 15. to trick or treat? Thanks ahead of time for your comments. NOTE: Please keep in mind that the 15 year old boy is HF Autistic.

What can I do next?

I would agree your older kids are a little old to be going. I think at this time taking their younger siblings/nieces or nephews and going with them it is fine.
I remember my mom pulling the plug on trick or treating when I was in seventh grade. I was mad but kind of understood. I found it way more fun in the long run to answer the door.

As a parent now too when opening the door and finding these big teenagers at my door kind of puts me off a bit. It is one thing if they are accompanying smaller kids but to see a gang of 13+ year olds at my door I just don't care for it and think they are too old! :)
Since your son is autistic it may be harder for him to grasp. If you are going as a family out and all that I see no reason for him not to dress up too and maybe just have extra candy for him at home.

A.,
In my neighborhood we have kids of all ages trick-or-treating. I don't think anything of it becuase if the older kids want to be out in the cold along with the younger ones have at it. One thing I noticed last year is that the older kids where rude about how much candy i gave them, so if your kids go out this year remind them to say thank you.
I think that kids no matter what age like the idea of getting a whole bunch of free candy and it is fun to dress up. So I think you should let your kids go trick-or-treating this year.

Never too old!! My sister and all her friends go- they are 17, and also my brother and his friends- 16, still go!! They think its funny, and if people want to be mortified or worry about something so trivial... thats their issue!!! Let them have fun while they still want to- pretty soon they'll be adults with kids themselves and wont have the option!!!

Personally, as long as the bigger kids are not rude and they are dressed up in a costume, I certainly don't have a problem with them coming to my door on Halloween.

Hi A.,

My oldest is 18 and last year she still went trick or treating. She took my youngest, age 8 which was helpful to me. My middle one is 12 this year and he is going, he is a very big boy...5'8" and 215#, but that doesn'tr matter! I say let the kids go as long as they want to. Let them be kids as long as they can! Don't worry about what others think because as long as kids behave themselves, there really shouyldn't be an issue.

Happy Halloween!
