Handheld dustbuster/vacuum - I was surprised at how well it worked and how happy I was with the results. Much better than lugging the regular vacuum up and down.
Ask for an I-robot Roomba for Birthday/holidays, etc. It's GREAT!
So this may sound like a silly question, but I have to ask the best way to vacuum carpeted stairs. I have never lived in a two story home before and we just recently bought one. I tried just using the hose on my regular vacuum to do them, and feel that is probably not the easiest way, trying to drag that heavy thing along with me every couple of steps. Should I be looking for a lightweight vacuum (and if so, please let me know your favorites!) or what is the best way?
Thanks!
K.

I have cleaned houses for about 7 years now. I do not have but a few 2-stories, but I generally have to use what the client has.
My favorite vacuum, though, is a "twinky"-shaped canaster vacuum that can sit sideways on the stairs and the how reaches as far as about 7 or 8 stairs before I have to move it to catch up with me.
Blessings and best of luck,

Just get a handheld vaccuum. You can get through all the stairs pretty quickly and won't be dragging the huge one around.
I know this may sound weird, but on occasion I use the broom. It works well to get up most surface stuff and stirs up the carpet fibers well (since they've been mashed down by being walked upon). I got the idea from some housecleaners.
I use a handheld. I have 2. Hoover with a belt that pulls up well BUT no bag so I have to clean the bag out myself, YUCK. Then I have a Shark that works well but no beater bar.
Both have long electric cords and do a decent job. When we shampoo our carpets, we do use the attachment (pain in the rear) but it works.
