Grand Bahama(freeport) is a very romantic yet inexpensive place to travel. We've been many times and really enjoyed the Island Seas Resort and also Old Bahama Bay Resort. On expedia, it shows Island Seas as only a 2.5 star but it is much better than that. The pictures hardly do it justice and its right on the beach. The rooms are equipped with full kitchens and are very spacious. Old Bahama Bay is exquisitely BEAUTIFUL but very expensive(500 a night),far from everything,and with teeny tiny rooms.
To save money...buy your airfare from expedia and use condoexpress.com for your hotel. You can stay at Island Seas for 99 a night in January through this site. Every other site charges over 150 a night. People buy private condos at some of these bigger hotels and rent them out for cheaper than the hotel does. Its great!
Here's another option: if you want to get away, yet don't want to deal with airfare, stay at a bed and breakfast or spa outside of Dallas. www.bedandbreakfast.com has a whole bunch of romantic places to stay. Or you can stay at one in Austin. There's a very nice spa out by Lake Travis.
Or drive out to Gainsville and stay at one of their historic B&B's that are only a few miles from the Winstar Casino. Elm Creek Manor is very nice...they cook you dinner(upon request) offer a HUGE complimentary breakfast,and have jacuzzis in the bathrooms. :)

Having sold vacation packages for years, I would ask you what he likes to do. Water? There is a wonderful beachfront hotel just down the road from the Breakers in Florida.
Just for the weekend, a sweet trip to Grandbuy can be fun and close to home.
Does he enjoy the woods? Skiing? New York or urban? Put him in his element to assure a successful trip!

we recently took a weekend trip to santa fe and really had a great time! lots of good hotels, excellent restaurants and tons of things to do from nothing to art galleries to hiking to mountain biking. the downtown area is really cute and the flights on southwest are a steal! enjoy your time together!

Not sure how far from home you want to go, but Charleston, SC is beautiful and romantic. There's a diverse selection of things to do, or just walk through the historic part of town.

Another place I've heard was a good romantic getaway, though I've never been myself but my parents have, is San Antonio and the Riverwalk there.

Our family is from the Chicagoland area. One place that many people visit is called Mackinac Island MI. It's a great place to just get away. There are no cars on the island so you take a ferry over. Once on the island you either walk or take a horse drawn carriage to your destination. There are shops and historical landmarks. Here is a web site that has more info. http://www.mackinacisland.org/

For a really romantic time close to home, try the Hotel St. Germain in Dallas, on Maple Avenue. It is an incredible European style B&B and serves a 7 course dinner. The price is worth it, especially since you won't have to pay airfare.

A little further out, try Rough Creek Lodge in Glen Rose (www.roughcreek.com). It's a great hunting lodge, but also has a spa and first-class meals. Very nice place to stay!

In the hill country, you might try the Guadalupe River Ranch (www.guadaluperiverranch.com). My husband and I spent our wedding night at the Hotel St. Germain and the rest of our honeymoon at the GRR (we didn't want to travel far), and it was really nice...a little lonely in the month of January (for us) but there were nice side trips to wineries and antique shops, etc.

These are very low-key suggestions - not exciting and adventure or activity filled! But sweet, with lots of fun "discovering" places along the way. The trip to and from the Guadalupe RR was beautiful, and on our way back, we stopped at Luchenbach, TX and had fun there!

We went to Salado for our last anniversary. It is just north on Austin. There are a lot of B&B's and little shops.

Charleston is a great suggestion. Lots of places to stay, great places to eat, shops to browse, etc. We just went to Phoenix, a spa resort called Sanctuary that was nice. If you like the B&B idea, there is one just north of the TX, OK border called Shiloh Morning Inn that has private cabins with jacuzzi tubs.

I don't know about romantic, but Disney World is a blast w/ o kids, too. You can get some good deals at that time & stay at one of the nicer resorts w/ some really beautiful scenery. And pay the extra for the Disney dining plan. It is well worth it. You'll get a table service meal w/ tip included for each of you each day, as well as a fast-food type meal & a snack. There are some great restaurants in the kingdom's various parks, but esp. Epcot's World Showcase & those meals can be very pricy. I'd highly recommend Le Cellier in Canada. Very romantic, elegant & wonderful!
