I need some new color ideas for our family pictures this spring and summer I'm always taking pictures but like to switch it up a bit! For the summer one we will be going to a garden so there will be lots of colors and one with a green arch walkway for spring it will probably just be at a park. Thank you for your help!

What can I do next?

We did a sports theme and it looked really cute - we had my daughter in a cheer outfit and her dad and I (when we were together) were in jerseys. Then he held the football and she held pom-poms (and I held her). They didn't do a cheesy background, just used a regular one and it looked really cute.

If I could stand the sight of him I'd still have it up!!!!!!!!

Well I had family pictures done last spring so I did pink (like a dark pink) and brown. So I wore a pink shirt with dark blue jeans. My hubby wore dark blue jeans with a white and brown striped polo type shirt. Then my two girls had brown and white zebra print sun dresses with the same color dark pink on the collar and dark pink hair bows. I thought it all worked really well because we weren't completely matching but it all went together.

Since they will be in nature, i think that natural tones and colors would be best. Maybe a light blue and lilac for Spring and then go with stronger colors for the summer ones. If there is lots of color in the summer one, you could just do dark denim and white shirts and or summer dresses.

turquoise and red, pale yellow and white, brown and cream with touches of orange, a few combos I have seen that look great together, but it also depends on skin tone and hair coloring as well. Sounds like it will be a beautiful background.

I would browse a photographer's pics and see if there are any combos that stand out for a family or style that looks similar to yours.

I always offer this advice when people ask this question...

Look at TLC's website for the Jon n Kate + 8, now Kate + 8 show... they often took outdoor photos of the family, and they did a great job of creating great, coordinating color palattes - not matchy, matchy, but cohesive. And they often used nice, vibrant colors. The photo I linked is a perfect example...

Please don't do khaki and white, or jeans with white shirts. Seriously, if I see another family picture with these completely lacking in any creativity, mind numbingly boring combos, I will be forced to vomit. Sorry if I offended anyone, but that is honestly the way I feel.

We like to wear varying shades of blue and jeans. It might be a solid shirt or pattern. As long as if it looks good, that's all that matters

It all depends on what looks good on everyone. I saw one family that everyone had on tan slacks or shorts and white shirts, and another family that all wore black pants or skirts and a white shirt. You could have the men wear one color and women wear another (coordinating) color, like have men wear red, women wear pink.
My recent favorite was a family in very different outfits (dresses, shirt/tie, suit, shirt/vest, sweater/slacks, etc) but all in the same color palate. It was all varying shades of earthy greens with black bottoms. The pictures turned out beautifully!

**EDIT** By using the "completely lacking in any creativity, mind numbingly boring combos" such as khaki/white or denim/white, you are focusing more on the FAMILY rather than the colors of the clothes. If you wear vibrant colors, your eye will be drawn to the clothes, not the faces.

I love the combination of brown and green. My daughter got a beautiful brown and green paisley sundress for Christmas so we're going to work off of that for the rest of our outfits.

If you're going to be in a garden, I'd stay away from clothes that are too 'busy'. Don't do patterned clothing (stripes, dots, etc). Choose 2 or 3 colours in solids. Some I like:

brown, pink, purple
brown, green, purple
white, blue, purple
brown, red, white
yellow, green, white

I took some pics of my girls in the park. They wore red and it looked really nice. Red is actually one of the 4 universally flattering colors. here is the link for the rest http://shopping.yahoo.com/articles/yshoppingarticles/256/...

Not on the list but white always looks good for summer portraits
