My daughter starting 1st grade in August I know that schools have lots of days off, half a day school etc. and afterschool care providers are closed as well. What do you do with your kids? I don't have any family here and no stay at home friends. I was thinking about babysitter but where to find somebody nice and with very flex hours?

What about HS kids? They are off usually on those days also. You could try going to the HS now and seeing if they have any groups or programs that they offer the kids. By me they have babysitting classes for HS kids. Get to know someone there and give them a test run one weekend. Just an idea. That's all I've got..Good luck.

Our schools have after-care at school that is reasonably priced, until 6:00. They also are open on many school holidays. But there are other options too - I wondered the same thing before I got to know our school better, because it's the kind of thing that isn't well advertised. But there are a couple of daycares that send a bus over to the school to pick up kids, there are home daycares that send a walker over to the school, etc. I also know a couple of people who watch kids after school at their house, and a mom who has a teenaged high-school babysitter until she gets home.
