What Do You Do to Prevent Illness?

My oldest son was diagnosed with the flu yesterday. (He did get the flu shot). We got the test at the pediatrician and it came back positive. He also has bronchitis. He takes vitamins and eats pretty well, yet this kid gets sick lots. He sleeps about 9 hours a night during the week and at least 12 hours a night on the weekends and school hoidays. He is 14.

Do you have any ideas on keeping him healthy? Is it a teenager thing that he's going through? Now that he has the flu, I've been wiping down all the doorknobs and light switches, and washing all the bedding and towels, I also got some meds from the dr. to give the other kids for prevention as well.

Any suggestions are welcome. My other kids rarely get sick. My oldest one lasted until January and he was sick for about 1 week then and now he has the flu.

Thanks!

Is he getting a lot of physical activity? That really helps develop the immune system and help the body fight off illnesses. Does he have his tonsils? Sometimes if a kids getting sick regularly you may have to have them out.

We turn the thermostat down during the day to 59 degrees when we're not home. At night, it's kept at 69. There are a host of germs that cannot survive when the temp is below 70-72. If you're cold, throw an extra blanket on the bed or add a sweatshirt. This has made a significant difference in my family's health (not to mention heating bill - we use a programmable thermostat.)

Good luck and think spring thoughts -- it's coming and this will all be a distant memory!

Every kid's immune system is different. I was a sickly kid - I swear - I caught everything! As an adult, I don't get sick very often.

I think you're doing all the right things and are a fantastic mom.
