What Has Your Puppy Eaten?

So.... my 7.5yo son has been waiting FOREVER to lose his first tooth - it finally happened yesterday! Yay!!! Then, I placed it in a kleenex on the kitchen counter while I finished prepping dinner, turned around, puppy and kleenex were gone! I hunted him down, but it was too late :( I guess that's one of the hazards of loving a 110 lb doberman pup!

What can I do next?

Omg...perfect timing for this question. On Sunday, my seven year Cavalier King Charles Spaniel ate nine of the thirty six cupcakes my dd and I made for her class for Monday morning! The little stinker left the wrappers though so I was able to count exactly how many he ate! Best part was he had pink icing and sprinkles on his face so we knew he was guilty !!

My 7 year old lab/pit has eaten a lot of the last few years. Seems the older he is getting the more he is getting into. As a puppy he chewed up a pillow. Came home from a grocery store run to my living room being covered in white fluff. He's pulled loaves of bread off the counters and just last night ate one of my spoons that was left on the counter.
Now my 3 year old Shiba/cattle dog mix. She will eat anything that she can get a hold of and it is usually my husbands stuff. She's gotten his jacket sleeves, anything that has been left against her crate, a can of bacon grease, plastic dog bowls (now have stainless steel ones), blankets, towels, plastic spoons, crayons, playdoh, my husbands shoes.
There is never a dull moment with my two dogs.

My pug has always been very good about not getting into most things, but for some reason he has a penchant for crayons and Playdoh. Fortunately they are non-toxic but I always find out after the fact when he produces rainbow-colored poop!

As a vet I've seen dogs (and cats!) eat a wide variety of items. Some of them have had to go to surgery and we've pulled out socks, underwear, dish towels, toys, coins, hair scrunchies, corn cobs, rocks, chunks of rawhide, slippers, pieces of garden hose, pieces of leather leash, you name it. Cats seem to go for ribbon/string and hair ties. One of our monthly veterinary publications has a contest every year for vets to send in their craziest x-rays of pets and what they have eaten, then they publish the top 10. Some of the x-rays have included:

- A Lab that had 14 golf balls in it's stomach
- A Boxer that had 3 lb of pea gravel in it's stomach
- A Jack Russel that had 1 lb of pennies and other coins in it's stomach
- A Pit Bull with an 11 inch steak knife in it's esophagus and stomach
- A cat with a TV antenna stuck down it's esophagus
- Another Boxer with an intact rubber ducky in it's stomach (you could see the outline and everything!)

omg. my charlie (golden retriever mix) he is 3 now ... BUT the first year of his life, he ate ANYTHING! and he was not a "chewer" he didn't chew stuff and ruin it, he ATE things and you wondered where they went! he ate a gift card of mine once (thankfully i was able to get it replaced) he's eaten pens, socks, large chunks of a towel, sticks, shoes, an entire frozen pizza that just came out of the oven & was on top of the stove (pushed way far back!) i went outside for literally 2 minutes to call my daughter in from playing, xmas tree ornaments, glass, YES GLASS, the biggest thing he ate, yes ATE, was his HARD PLASTIC water dish. he was sick the weekend after! that little bugger ate anything that was left out. in the past year to year & a half he has been really good , not really eaten much. he was crate trained for the 1st year & a half of his life! i couldn't leave him unsupervised. poor baby. but thank god he grew out of it.

Not really eating, but chewing: the legs on a wooden bench, pencils, random garbage, many a plastic toy, a fork, dryer sheets, a blanket, flip flops, guinea pig chew sticks, an unused tampon, tissues, etc.

I've been thinking about getting a puppy for my kids, but this has reminded me of why I don't want one!

Our cat loves ribbons. Anytime someone gets a balloon with a weight to keep it down, she immediately chews through the ribbon, the balloon goes up to the ceiling and she pukes up the ribbon 10 minutes later.

Growing up we had a Dalmatian. She was part billy goat.. of the things she used to eat. My mom or dads teeth was one of them. There is something about them that attracts dogs.

Other things on the list
Pop cans & bottles.
The end of the sausage package- with the staple
1 lb of macadameia nuts ( I know I am spelling that wrong)
a few bees
a few pairs of shoes

But over all , I still miss her. :)

Are you going to wait for the puppy to poop it out?

My puppy? Let's see...a blue ink pen, a battery, the bathroom rug, the kitchen rug, the couch, the recliner (down to the frame), the other couch, a variety of magazines and books including a Bible, a package of M&Ms, a stick of butter...oh and money, probably about $50 worth over the years.

I have to add this one - my sheltie ate the petroleum jelly out of a small jar, and also, another time, a baggie of powdered sugar doughnuts - including the baggie. Both times he was ok, thank goodness!

My dog I have now is pretty much perfect (I am not kidding or exaggerating) and he has never chewed or damaged anything...

....But we had a black lab when I was 19y/o and she ate, I am talking TOTALLY consumed, one of my 8 hole burgundy doc marten boots! Ate it gone! I was SO pissed! And then a week later I bought myself a brand new pair of blue Birkenstock sandals & she chewed up both of them in the 30 mins I left her alone! Ugh! That was so depressing! They were do expensive and completely destroyed :(

Our male Pug was highly food motivated and would get into anything remotely food related. We could never set bags of dog food down for a second. Twice he tore into dog food bags and ate massive amounts at once. We thought both times he might not make it. We would find him lying on his side, laboring to breathe with his stomach distended to ridiculous proportions. He got into the pantry a couple of times and would knock down whatever was on the lower level. Consequently he broke up a jar of spaghetti sauce and made an awful, dangerous mess. Then there were all of the nonfood items he got into – mulch, rocks, dirt, dog poop, Kleenex, sanitary pads, paper towels, green scrubbers…the list goes on. The worst and most inexplicable – an entire box of Brillo pads. You know those lovely steel mesh cleaning pads preloaded with blue cleaner…yeah, that was pretty coming out the other end. Fortunately he was too short to reach the counters or it would have been considerably worse. He was fine as a puppy but got worse with age.
