What Is Flaming?

Okay, I'm slow sometimes when it comes to things on here. The first time I saw someone call another poster a troll I thought well that's a mean thing to say and how does she know what she looks like! :P It took me a sec to figure that one out!

Not taking the time with this one, what is flaming? Is it kinda like "fueling the fire"?

What can I do next?

Pretty much like it sounds. You are intentionally posting something meant to cause rage in another or at least get them worked up.

Another form of flaming is pretending to answer a question when you are in fact attacking other people. As Illustrated by another poster in this thread.

when a poster doesn't like what another poster says....& comments about that other poster - by name! - calling everyone's attention to that other person.

We have quite a few repeat offenders on here. :)

According to Terms and Conditions:
"On the internet, flaming is the practice of attacking people on a personal level by posting or sending a message that is intentionally hostile and insulting. Name calling, assuming character flaws, and nasty comments are all considered flaming.".
What's tolerated is largely a function of the interpretation of the monitor de jour.
Some are more delete inclined than others.

They have a hard time with troll definition here.
There are different types of trolls.
They are:
The Bored's, The Liars, The Confrontationalists and The Controversials

Just about every site out there has examples of every type.

Trolls just want attention and will do what ever it takes to get a reaction, any reaction, out of people.
The best course of action is to ignore / shun / not respond but it can be hard to do sometimes.
One great thing about Facebook is you can block people so at least on a personal level you don't have to view it.
That might be a handy feature to add to this site.

I don't consider it flaming to call out another poster by name and tell them why their answer is wrong. It's generally the most direct way to get the truth out there. I almost did it today (but then reconsidered because I was having difficultly not making my response too nasty).

I do consider it flaming to call out another poster by name and just call them names, with no explanation or backup.

It really seems to piss people off, though, to just quote an offensive/nonfactual post (instead of naming the poster) and explain why it's so wrong. That's why I sometimes use the poster's name, if I want to respond directly to a specific post.

Aren't those little trolls with the hair all sticking up hysterical looking? I immediately thought of that the first time I saw the word "troll" mentioned here, too, Keisha!

Speaking of trolls (without the funky hair and bug eyes), in addition to what others have said about them here, a lady today said something that I thought was very true.

She voiced the concern that a poster here is " ...a "concern troll"; A troll who posts questions to make it seem that they are concerned or curious, but with the true, ulterior motive of bashing, flaming or spreading hatred."

She is spot-on. And I will go further to say that people who actually aren't trolls, as such, use this troll-like behavior in their questions to get people who don't know that they are being "used" to answer their question in a way to degrade another poster.

Oh, and B's definition of flaming (and trolls) is excellent!

Flaming to me is when the post just gets outrageously mean or nasty.
For example I feel SO OFFENDED that Cheryl O called out on Jo W. Cheryl might find it funny, but I don't. (this is where personal perception comes into play) I could turn it in as the offended THIRD party. Which I think is REALLY LAME. And it would then be considered flaming, you would then get a letter from mama-corporate telling you just that.
(I'm just kidding Cheryl, I really like you and Jo)
