Oh man, I want to do this. I just heard about it a few weeks ago. The only thing is, there is an event or two involving claustrophobia that I'm not sure I could do.
I have no info, but I would love to hear how it goes! Good for you!
Hi Moms and Dads,
I have missed you all. Here is some catching up before my question: Yes, I am still hoping to get pregnant! My obsession is under control, we are no longer "trying" and just letting things happen and I am finally happy with where I am right now. We will be on a family vacation for a few weeks coming up and I am excited to have this family time as the three of us!
Anyway, my husband and I recently found out about Tough Mudder and we want to start training for it. We plan to complete one next fall (2013). I want to start training right away but I know if I get pregnant I will have to scale back quite a bit.
My question is - have any of you moms out there trained for this? If I maintain a moderate workout routine during pregnancy, how hard to I need to train after having the baby before I am prepared for this event? Did you train while pregnant? Did you have to wait to recover from delivery before you trained? How long after haveing your baby did you train/wait to attempt the event?
I would love any info any of you might have on this!!! Thanks in advance!
This is something I have to do I just want to be as prepared as possible.
Thanks everyone for the feedback. I am going to start training right now and continue on with it as long as I can. If I get pregnant *fingers crossed* I will scale back and maintain a safe and moderate workout until after I have the baby and can kick into gear again. If for any reason I am not fit enough to enter next year, I will keep training and catch it the next time around!
Wish me luck!

I have completed 3 Tough Mudders and am scheduled to complete another in October. The courses are 10 miles and longer and are very dangerous to anyone who is pregnant or even postpartum. I would not recommend doing one until you are in more than decent shape. Its TOUGH. I routinely do half marathons and just completed an Olympic Triathlon and TM's are right along those lines of "toughness". Your cardio has to be on point before you tackle one of these. There are lots of videos on youtube that show the types of obstacles and the atmosphere. Its really a great event and I highly recommend them to everyone. The charity is amazing and being an ex-active duty sailor, I try to sign up for every one that comes to my area. Good luck and I hope you do get the opportunity to complete one after youre good and ready.
I worked out quite heavily all throughout my pregnancy. Good trainers should be able to help you know what is and isn't safe, and you should also keep a good dialogue with the ob who can guide you. I wouldn't do one of these while pregnant though. My friends just did one and it's extremely tough and can be dangerous during pregnancy.
I don't have any answers, but just wanted to say I think it is awesome that you are going to participate! A friend of mine from high school (he is now a priest) and his 4 brothers just did one a few weeks ago, and it looks like such a great event! Good luck training!
My sister and her husband did the Tough Mudder when she was two weeks preggo. She obviously had no idea she was expecting nine months later. She was in really good shape before she got pregnant and her doctor told her she could do any and all activity that she would normally do while she was pregnant. However, she would not do a Tough Mudder because it can be dangerous terrain.
You could train the whole time you are pregnant on a treadmill or other gym machines and maybe some light weight training (ask your doctor) but beyond that you would need to focus on a healthy pregnancy. Once you had the baby you could continue light training until you get the all clear from your doctor to go back to hardcore training.
My sister and her husband were both able to run 13 miles prior to the race. Now that my sis had her baby she is far from ready or even focused on another Tough Mudder but her husband was able to do another this past spring and she was able to support him from the side lines :)
Best wishes on training and maybe a growing family!!
I think for the most part you can train as usual while in the early stages of pregnancy. I would never start a rigorous training program or increase training while pregnant, but maintaining or scaling back by 30% on weight lifting would be ok, in the early stages. Later stages, you probably won't want to train like this anyway.
I think a lot of people think that if you are pregnant you are somehow disabled and must not do anything but sit on the couch and eat for 2. It's important to stay active, but taking extra care to be careful.
I saw this too, and it looked fun until the folks were being electrocuted in water and loosing consciousness. That's when I decided it wasn't for me.
I'd talk to your doctor for sure if you are pregnant or recovering from a pregnancy while training for this.
