Wondering About Clomin....

I lived in Austin when I gave birth to my first child. My doctor was Dr. Landwermeyer, and she is in an all female practice. All of the doctors are great, and they are very progressive. Good luck.

I used Clomid for both of my kids and everything turned out great. I was told that twins were possible, but that did not happen in our two cases. My doctor was Christopher Seeker. He is AMAZING! I highly recommend him, but I am not sure if he is taking patients. I have heard other wonderful things about the other doctors in his practice. Hope that helps.

EDIT - I wanted to edit this based on one of the other responses that said not just any doctor will hand you Clomid and that is true. We worked with my OB/GYN and had been trying for awhile to get pregnant. I got pregnant after about 9 months of trying and then had a miscarriage. After the miscarriage, my cycles would not return to normal and I was not ovulating. That is when my OB prescribed the drug. I am sure every case and doctor are different, but we didn't have to work through fertility specialists and no invasive testing was done on either of us. Since I had gotten pregnant before, I guess they knew that the problem was related to ovulation and that is what Clomid does, so we tried it and it worked for us. You should start with seeing an OB that you trust and work from there. I can't guarantee you won't have to see a fertility doctor, but we didn't. Good luck to you!

I used Clomid to get pregnant with my first child. It was very easy and I had no side effects at all. It basically forced me to ovulate. I was not having predictable cycles and it was preventing us from getting pregnant. They had me on the lowest dose possible and I got pregnant the first month! Worked like a charm for us. It's just a pill you take and if you've been having trouble, this may be the way to go. We didn't have twins, but there is a chance of that. I would think you could go see any OB to discuss it (I'm in Houston, not Austin, so I can't give you any specific recommendations). Good luck! I hope it works out for you.

I used the lowest dose of clomid and was pregnant the first month I used it. I don't think on the lowest dose your chances are that great of having twins. Good luck.

We used Clomid (clomiphene) for several months. Whether or not it works will depend on the reason you aren't getting pregnant. Sometimes obgyn's prescribe it before doing extensive testing if they have reason to believe your cycles are not consistent or that you're not ovulating. It's much less invasive than a lot of the testing. If it doesn't work, then you can be sent in for testing. Some people do get the testing beforehand. I had testing before I tried it. Because my cycles were normal, they assumed that Clomid wasn't what I needed. I ended up going on it for 3 months just in case it might help, but it didn't. I had 2 blocked tubes so we just did it in case there might be a miracle while we waited for my first IVF cycle.

So, if you aren't ovulating normally, or if you have hormonal issues, Clomid can work like a charm. If there's more to it, another procedure may have to be done after further testing. We went to the UT Health Science Center in SA, but that'll be a little far for you to drive.

I have read most of your precious responses.

I do not believe you can get Clomid handed to you by just any doctor. You will need to go through fertility specialists who will test you and your husband for every possible reason you are having difficulty getting pregnant.

It took my husband and I 2 months to get through all of the testing and to a point where the doctor suggested Clomid. That was going through the military and being pressured by an OBGYN who claimed that if I did not have help getting pregnant, I would be forced to have a full hysterectomy and would not be able to have any more children at all (I had endometriosis and the usual culprits for reversing, or alleviating symptoms of it were not working in my body).

I was not aware that there was multiple dosages to chose from, we were simply given the meds with direction on when to take them and for how long, along with a promise of more testing if they did not work (a test I was sincerely dreading as it required the use of an iodine product as a contrast and I am allergic to iodine). I was lucky and it worked the first month. I now have happy, healthy twins.

I was not told that dosage high or low or multiple tries was needed to have twins, simply that there is a high risk of multiple births when using any type of fertility drug. We accepted the risks along with the responsibility of what we would do should there be too many for us to be able to care for. Thought hey do offer the option (in the case of - what I refer to as - puppies) of selective abortion to bring the number to a more manageable and likely to survive without risk of challenges. I would not have chosen this option, but ONLY due to the fact that it was too hard to get pregnant for me int he first place and the option offered too high a risk of spontanious miscarriage. the facts are, when using ANY type of fertility method or drugs, you run the much higher risk of multiples in the way of twins, triplet, quads or more(puppies);-)

Being in the military we were sent to Wolford (SP?) Hall on the AFB in San Antonio. Their fertility specialists were excellent and very understanding.

It think some OB doctors prescribe Clomid if they are experienced in fertility issues and working with different medications and are able to diagnose your issues. My Dr. and I have discussed it. I was diagnosed with PCOS and was given Metformin and that worked for me (had a baby girl a year ago), but we talked about Clomid as the next step to help with ovulation issues. I did take it to have my daughter. The results being more than one fetus, I was told, is a lot less likely than if you are going to have a more invasive fertility. I only had one beautiful girl. However, we were told that it may take 3 or more months to get pregnant, so that's what we planned for. I was pregnant the first month. Get the ovulation strips at Walgreens to see when you are actually ovulating as well. Good Luck.

I was diagnosed with PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) in August of 2004. The doctor told me that was why I was having difficulty conceiving. When you have PCOS it can make you ovulate irregularly. So in September he started me on the lowest dosage of Clomid 50mg. I did not get pregnant the first month like so many other woman have stated before me. The doctor increased my dosage to 100mg in October once again nothing. So in November he increased it to 150mg which was the highest dose you could take in 2004. I don't know how high of a dosage they allow now. I still didn't get pregnant so we continued another month on 150mg. I found out in the beginning of January the 2nd month of the highest dosage worked. I now have almost 4 year old twin boys. The clomid makes you ovulate and sometimes makes you ovulate more than one egg which is what happened in my case. The low dose can also do that I guess but it didn't for me and I can only comment on what happened for me. My OB/GYN was also a fertility specialist so I got luck in that area and unfortunately I live in the Beaumont area and not in the Austin area. I was on Clomin after loosing our first child to a fatal birth defect. My husband and I waited to have children until our careers were going. Once we wanted a child, we wanted a child. After loosing our first child and getting through the grief, we tried again. I was not getting pregnant because my body was messed up from my first pregnancy. My doctor put me on Clomin to speed up the process. I did not have much faith in it. I got pregnant the first month. She is healthy and a true blessing. She is now 6 years old. Her father and I are now divorced, but we are blessed to co-parent her.

My OB put me on clomid when I was unable to get pregnant after conceiving our first child without even trying! It was so frustrating so I went to see a new OB after trying for a whole year with no results. I had to go through testing as well as my husband and the results were: "unexplained secondary infertility". I got pregnant unexpectedly while on birth control for our first daughter and then tried so hard to conceive again after she turned 1 with no luck. I started on Clomid when our first daughter was 2. I took 3 months of it and began to experience very painful side effects. I couldn't be touched in my midsectionn without screaming in pain. Eventual testing showed I had a rare negative reaction to clomid....overstimiluation of both my ovaries. They were so stimulated and full of eggs that I almost lost both my ovaries due to rupturing. The toxic effects of clomid also showed up in my liver as well...I had 25% deterioration of my liver from 3 months on it. We stopped clomid immediately in january. my husband and I spent 3 months working on our relationship and being stronger as a unit together concentrating on our 2 year old daughter. with God's blessing, and no medicine or fertility intervention, we conceived on our own 3 months later and now have a 2nd daughter who is a very spunky fire-cracker of a 2.5 year old! :)
Just an additional note, we decided to go for #3 and were nervous about the length of time it would take to conceive, if we could at all. We decided to finally try again last october and got pregnant the first time with no medical help! I'm due to be induced tomorrow morning with our first son! :)

Some docs may want you to chart your cycles to make sure you are ovulating and just why you aren't getting pregnant. I would suggest the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" It is a simple read and it works great.

I used it to get pregnant with our first child. I had no fertility issues and was pregnant in 3 months. I am currently pregnant with our second child. Again I used the book and charted cycles. We resorted to Clomid not because I wasn't ovulating, but because my lutuel phase was too short to maintain a pregnancy. We were pregnant after our first Clomid cycle.

Not all OB/GYN will refer you to a RE. IF you have documentation of your cycles and you are ovulating they may do some labs then refer you.

I was prescribed clomid in the summer of last year not only did it not work for me it made my hormones go crazy sphyco I cried over everything would yell and scream and not know what I was really mad about. It really messed with my moods. I stopped taking it but have yet to become pregnant.
