Hey there,
Just wanted to say I think that the Mirena is the best I have two boys 2 years and 10 months and this was the best decision. Works great and without any hassles of having to remember a pill etc. If you have any questions let me know but I would definately reccomend it!!

M.,

The Mirena IUD is one of the best things I have ever done for myself. I was interested in having my tubes tied. My gynecologist suggested the Mirena because I was also burdened with very heavy periods and this one sheds your uterus. Birth control became a no brainer and my periods were scant. Check with your doctor and insurance company about cost/coverage.

Hi, I currently use Mirena and LOVE it. My youngest is 2 and I've been on it since my 6 week check up with her. The only negative that I have to say about it is, they say you usually don't have a cycle, but I have had a cycle every month (I guess I'm part of that .1%). But that's fine because I have no other negative complaints about it. It's in there and I can forget about it. With the pills, I usually have to set my clock in the evening just to remember to take it or I end up taking 2-3 at a time (which is not good). Then, I was on the depo for several years prior to having the baby and it caused weight gain, even when I would try to work out. But I have noticed no unusual weight gain with Mirena and it's good for 5 years (you can get it taken out prior to then if you like). Mirena is something you just don't have to think about for FIVE years!!! Love it!

I have a Mirena and haven't had any trouble. I had it put in 7 weeks after my daughter was born so I did feel a little uncomfortable at first but got used to it in a few weeks. My insurance paid for it as well.
You won't get a regular monthly period though which is a little weird to me.
Hope this helps.

Hi Yes. I used Mirena. It worked perfectly for two years after my son was born. However, I am now three months pregnant. The IUC was still in place and they removed it at my first OB appt. I was not expecting this and did not even believe I was pregnant until I saw the ultrasound. Mirena states there is a 1 in 1000 chance of getting pregnant while using it, and of course I just had to be that one.

It was very uncomfortable to insert because I have been told my uterus is in and awkward position. My periods did get heavier and longer and more painful while using it. But really it was very convenient, I did not have to think about it. It worked fine for two years, but I just was not expecting to get pregnant. It was still in position and everything, it just did not work, at least one time.

I do kow women with the Paragard who love it. And for the most part I like Mirena. I don't know if this is going to help you or not, just sharing my story.

Yes, I have Mirena. I've had it since Dec 2005. I was told it had to stay in for 7 years. According to the card that was given me with the insertion date and the date it should be removed (2012). I had initial cramping when it was inserted. I was told that it's best to have it inserted while your period is on (messy). It ensures you are not pregnant and something about the uterus being more pliable or something like that. I was given motrin 800mg for cramping. It came in handy because a few months later out of the blue, I would have painful cramping and the motrin was the only thing that eased it. I hardly have any periods. I just had one that lasted about 5 days (not very handy). It was the first real one I've had in awhile. I do occaisionally have spotting but nothing that a pantyliner can't handle. Also, my husband was on active duty from his guard unit so it didn't cost a cent.

I love it. I have the same IUD and it is absolutly wonderful not having to remember to take anything. I also have not had a monthly in almost 2 years. It is great. You know with the pills you usually gain weight but with this I did not. I would recommend it to anyone. I only had a little cramping when it was inserted but I have had no cramping since, and my insurance paid for all but 50 of it. When my 5 years are up you better believe I will be in the DR office getting another inserted. It was one of the best decisions I have made :)

Hi M.. I guess I'm with most everyone else when they say go for it! I have only had mine for 3 months, but it's well worth it. I did have some cramping in the beginning and I did bleed for probably a month, but it did go away. My periods are a little irregular, but they only last 1 or 2 days and then it's gone. I'm still waiting to see if they disappear all together, but I do love having it in and not worrying about getting pregnant. I don't about insurance, but I am military, so Tricare did pay for it.

I have it and love it. If you take two ibuprofen before insertion, even that pain is mimimal. You sound like you're worried about the cost - I'm having to pay $50/month for a year. My insurance would not help at all. Considering it's five years of BC, that's a great deal. I do get a monthly period, but it is very, very light - I only use pantiliners for about 3 days out of the month.

I am currently using the Mirena IUD. It is the best, most worry-free method of birth control ever, and I love it for the most part. I haven't had a period since the month after it was put in, which I consider a plus. The only drawback for me is that I seem to be experiencing a rare side effect. The progestin is too much for my body, so I am experiencing some pregnancy-like symptoms, including enlarged breasts and difficulty losing weight, acne and hair loss. My body has never tolerated hormone-related birth control well, so I am having to switch to the Paragard Copper IUD next week. I was unaware that there was even a chance of these symptoms, but it is apparently a very rare reaction. If you have tolerated the pill well, then you should not experience these side effects. It cost about $600, but that is cheaper than 5 years worth of birth control, and my insurance covered 100% of the cost. If you want to be sure that the cost would be covered if you have insurance, then you can ask your doctor's office to pre-certify you with your insurance company, and they will be able to tell you exactly what you will have to pay when all is said and done. Side effects aside, I love the IUD birth control method. Good luck!

I got the Mirena IUD shortly after my daughter was born and it was wonderful for the first 4-5 months. Then, out of nowhere, I started bleeding and didn't stop for 45 days! My doctor removed the IUD and after a couple of weeks the bleeding stopped. I am now on Ortho Tricyclene Lo birth control and even though its not easy to have ONE MORE THING to remember everyday, I am feeling much better and my bleeding is completely normal again. I don't know how much this happens to women who use the Mirena IUD, but this was MY personal experience. Hope it helps! Good luck!

I have been using Mirena for about a year now. At the beginning, I hated it. the bleeding was terrible. My doctor told me to expect 12 weeks of irregular periods but it was more like 6 months. Now it's good. My periods are getting lighter and lighter and my dr says they may even disappear altogether. That would be nice!

I would say go ahead and do it if your insurance will pay for it. Just be prepared for a rough couple of months. Good Luck!

I have had Mirena before.I got it after my first child was born and had it removed when I wanted to have my second.I had nothing but good things with it.No period,no side effect,no weight gain and no worry for 5 years.Only discomfort you feel is when it is being inserted you will feel a little cramping and maybe some slight spotting that day if any.But some have said they needed the string or wire snipped shorter but that wasn't the case for me.Though my husband did complain about it "poking" him during intercourse but (not to sound nasty) he is "freakishly large" in that department so depeding on ur guy that might not be a problem. But I find it to be the best birth control out there.I would have it if I had insurance but we are currently using the "pull-out" method and I'm hoping that continues to work as it has the last couple of years.

I had the Mirena BC IUD inserted this past February and just had it removed last week. My experience with it was not very pleasant. I felt that I was PMSing all the time and I had breakthrough bleeding everyday. At a time when I was supposed to be losing weight (I had my son in January), I was gaining, even though I was eating correctly and working out. (I found out after that it was due to the IUD). There were lots of side effects, but the most disturbing was the fact that I lost my sex drive. I reacted the same way to the Depo Shot. With that said, there have been several people who I have spoken with that have not had these side effects. I would recommend that you do a lot of research on it first and talk to your doctor. If you have tried other methods (like the Shot) and responded badly to them, there is a possibility that you could react the same. Good luck!

I have had the 5 year Mirena (there is a 10 year one too) in for a year and a half now... and I love it! Initially the cramping after putting it in was pretty bad, which lasted about 3 days and the bleeding was off and on for about a month or two. But after that it's been amazing. No hormonal swings, no cramping and no period except an extremely light spotting about every 3 or 4 months. Yay! I would definitely recommend this, and depending on who you have for insurance, my insurance covered the whole thing, I just had the $25 co-pay. good luck!

I have a Mirena IUD. I love it. I dont have to worry about taking anything every day . its one time in the dr's office takes only a few minutes to put in slight cramping and its done. I only bleed every 3 months I still have PMS everymonth and its pretty bad ( horimones gone nuts , headaches, nausia) , but I don't think its associated with the IUD,my system has been screwed up since I had my son. I've had no weight gain from it. And it lasts for 5 years.

Hi M.,
I had the Mirena put in about 3 months after my son was born. About a month later, I developed a mysterious "hive-like" rash. I was treated for hives twice, took oatmeal baths and everything. I had to eliminate all my medications when the welts kept coming back and I knew it was not hives. Long story short, when I went to my OB/Gyn they said they had never seen anything like it(I was swollen from head to toe)and the only option was to remove it. I don't want to scare you, but if you do decide to go with it and develop a severe rash that is not hives, get it removed IMMEDIATELY! Once removed, it took about a week but I was back to normal.

Hey M.,

I understand your situation. My husband and I are using two methods for birth control. One is avoid pregnancy calendar on www.yourdays.com and the other is Ortho Conceptrol Vaginal Contraceptive Gel. This has worked for us for 3 years. We do not want any more kids at this time but I didn't want to be on the pill cause I can never remember to take it on a daily basis, the injection shot made me gain to much weight, wasn't interested in anything going in my arm. I like things natural and this is the method we chose with success.

I know a lot of women that have one, for example my sister in law. Im going to get one when I have an extra $500. They are great! Everyone that know hardly ever has a period and when they do have one it is like 2 days. Just make sure you get it put in when you ARE on your period. When you are on it your uterus is more open and is much easier to put in. My SIL's dr didnt tell her that and it hurt alot worse. My dr wont put one in unless you are on it. Good luck!

As for the sex drive... try looking up natural aphrodisiacs. They are great.

I too love Mirena. I used it between children and again after my last.

As for sex drive, find kid free time together. It's hard to go from mom to wife when you are exhausted and not putting the time that you used to have into your partner. We had the same issue and started planning kid-free dates (anything works - even just a walk together alone) and it helped dramatically.

Good luck!

I have had the hormonal free IUD for about 6 months. Let me tell you it is the best thing since "slice bread". Granted the initial pain after the insertion everything has been pretty good so far. However, since I have the harmonal-free my periods are still every 28 days but with the Mirena having a period at all is second to none.

Hello M., I have been using Mirena since May 2004. I love it. I picked it because of the reduced periods. I had heavy bleeding for the first 4-6 weeks but since then it has gone to spotting for a few days every 3-4 months. My cramps are every few months as well and very mild. I picked this because my periods were 18-24 days long with BAD cramps most of the time. It was uncomfortable to have put in but once in you can not feel it at all. Plus it works, no new babies. My 4 year old was conceived while on the pill. Mirena last 5 years. You better beleive next May I will be in the doctor office to get another one. Hope this helps, D.

I also have Mirena, I've had it for about 2.5 years. It is truly the best form of birth control I've ever used. I had slight cramping for the first day after insertion. I also only have a very light period every few months. I used to have 7 -9 day very heavy periods, now I only have to use a panty liner for 2-3 days at the most. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Good luck with your decision.

My husband and I were like you two and decided to go with the snipping for him because, either one of us liked the idea of me not getting a period. That doesn't seem like it would be good for me long term to stop a natural cycle in life. Plus we didn't want any more children.

I think it only cost us $500-ish after insurance. The IUD was about $250. Not knowing what could happen long term to my health was worth the extra cost.

Wishing you all the best.
