My 2 1/2 year old is almost potty trained and we're getting to where she is wiping herself, but we've apparently been lax on what, specifically, we are going to call her vagina. (She asked Daddy to "wipe my butt" :) but was confused when he reached for her backside.) I know the technical terms are good, but I'm also looking for something my husband will be comfortable using and not too babyish. So, any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice! We're going to use pee-pee. She's tryied to "correct" me the first couple times, but she's catching on quickly.

Thanks again, to all of you!

Well Oprah calls it her va-jay-jay but with my two daughters we call it her "hoo ha". Pee pee is quite appropriate as well though... good luck :)

My parents always called it my "private parts"
Maybe if you use this she will begin to understand that it is a private area that only her/parents are supposed to see/touch. Hope this helps.

honestly,my daughter is five and we just call it her pee pee. i know what you mean about using the technical terms but my husband didn't feel comfortable with using vagina, that just takes some time when she gets older to really know what it is called. Hope this helps!

Good Morning L., We have been there too. But it was my oldest that came up with it. Her body is her vagina. It get confusing at times but that is what she calls it. So when she says something like my body hurts, I have to ask is it your whole body or just your body. Some call it hmmmm-hmmmmm, or vajaja. Whatever your daughter calls it, I would stick with that. Good Luck, K.

My 2yr old is saying the same thing... it being her butt. I was determined to teach my older (5)daughter at the time the correct names of body parts.. Her vagina I called it became her "GI" at 2yrs old she couldn't say Vagina and it stayed with us.. She is now teaching her younger 2yr old sister that its her GI and not her butt. It works for our family and you'll find what works for yours! :)

We used to say "front bottom." I think my daughter actually came up with that one herself.

I wouldn't worry about terminolgy, especially since the vagina is technically inside. I would just call it the "bottom" because it IS the bottom of her trunk! You could say the bottom and the butt for the entire thing. My friend got really stressed out about this same issue and ended up confusing her daughter and then teaching her incorrect terminology which she frequently repeats on the playground now. Think about what you want them to repeat without embarrassment and thats what you need to call it! Haha! Good luck (glad I had boys)

My husband was 1 of 3 boys, so this was a big issue! We have always called it their vagina - however, each of our girls had their own way of pronouncing it. our older one said "Gagina", while our younger one said "Jeannie". So, each of our girls call it their own thing. my husband is perfectly fine w/it because it's their own unique way & they came up with it. hope that doesn't sound weird! good luck!

My daughter is three now and she calls it her crotch. She has been calling it that for a while now. She used to do the same thing and I thought crotch was the best way to go since it is not such a big deal if she blurts it out in public or something. I hope this helps and good luck!

I also had a hard time with this when my finance was having his 3 year old daughter call it her "coochie". To me that was a little innappropriate. I suggested calling it her "privates" and that is what we have stuck with ever since. It seems to work well for us! Hope this helps!

I'm not sure how it developed but my girls, 12 and 9, when were smaller and talked about washing or anything like that with their dad said "body" for their vagina. It's a word they have all been comfortable with, even though it may seem a little vague.

I've always called my daughter's her crotch or "the front" when I wipe. And she recently recognized that brother's area was different from hers and mommy's. I also have explained to her that that area is "her" private area and that no one else needs to be touching it unless they are helping her wipe it after going potty.

We have a 3 year old and a 14 year old...soo sometimes words are chosed for us, if you know what I mean...but I told my daughter that she had a "private area that no one can touch except mommy or daddy to help her wipe or when she is bathing and that sometimes the doctor might have to look at her--- that being said she immediately started calling her vagina her "privates"--and there is no going back on it. On the other side, she noticed her daddy looks different and her brother told her daddy has a WILLY. It sure gets a giggle out of most people, and we just go with it- I know many people feel you should teach the proper names, but we feel comfortable with our choices, and I think that is the bottom line-
GOOD LUCK!

I am a mother of two teenage girls and one pre-teen boy. We used the terms, "girl part" and "boy part" when going through that phrase of our lives. We also were not shy to distinguish the difference between the operations of the front and the back of the child. Hope this helps.

Hi L.,

Well I have 4 kids, 2 boys and 2 girls. Their ages are 16 yrs and 7 yrs (both boys) and 3 yrs and 1 yr (both girls). My 2nd son named his own boy parts and it is called his "ding ding" and we say butt.

For the girls it is pee pee and butt. I think pee pee is ok and is a general term that you can use for a boy or a girl. My son just chose to name it something on his own.
Hope this helps, W.

Technical terms are good, and it's important that your daughter be comfortable with the parts of her own body. However, they are hard to say, so with my twin daughters, we call that part of their bodies their pooty. It's easy for them to say, it's not embarassing if they say it in public or to someone else, and it's not too babyish. My hisband uses the term with the girls and it doesn't bother him at all.

I never liked 'pee' or 'pee pee,' and felt vagina is not correct since that's not what the vagina does, so we reference it as her potty spot, as in 'you need to wipe your potty spot' or 'be sure to wash your potty spot.' Now that she's 6 years old I refer to it at times as her private area so we can lead to the discussion of people not touching her there because it's private.

Hi L.,

I come from a Spanish speaking country so we don't have that dilema, we use cola or colita for each part (translated would be: little bottom/bottom)
Here I use front and back, they don't need names this young, wipe your front or your back seems to work and they understand pretty well.
Good luck,
