I took my 7 year old to get a hair cut, and the lady that cut her hair was from the Phillipines. Of course I had my 1 year firecracker with me as well, whom from afar, appears to be bald. She does have a thin layer of firery red hair though, and one teeny little curl in the back.
So anyways, the lady from the Phillipines said that when their baby girls heads are like that, they shave them and there hair grows back SUPER fast.
My first reaction was umm NO, but then I started thinking about when my first daughters hair grew in, it was so weird, like a mullet. Longer in the back than the front and it was sooo goofy looking.
Personally, I love the fact that my babies look bald until they are almost 2, but it would be nice for it to grow in normal.
Bottom line, I would never have the nerve to do it, but it does make sense.

Vanity? If you have never dealt with a girls hair, I guess you could say that. Its hard to manage when its 500 different lengths.

It's an old wives tale! But generally while I probably wouldn't choose it for my baby (boy or girl), who cares what others do?
I used to wear my head shaved in my late teens and early twenties and LOVED it - for me it was a very liberating experience. I think when I grow grey and balding (female pattern baldness runs in my family), I will definitely do it again!

I've heard of grown women doing this too, to "start over", and have heard that hair grows back amazing when it's all shaved off.
If shaving made hair grow back thicker, wouldn't ALL men shave their heads throughout their lives so they would never go bald?
It's an old wives tale and perhaps an ancient tradition. But I think it would be really odd.
what you do to the hair on top of your head has very little to do with the root ... which is where it grows from.
Cutting/perming/coloring/etc does NOTHING to change how fast, the thickness, and texture of your hair.
Even out? Maybe.
Shave? No.
No. I'd prefer not to push vanity on a baby.

Yes, this is an Asian tradition. A lot of people swear by it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was something that was started a long time ago when kids had lice. The hair does grow back really fast after it is shaved. Most Asians have thick hair, so whether or not it is actually thicker when it grows back is hard to say.
My daughter's hair grew in like a mullet, and it was so thick and long that I had to give her her first hair cut when she was four months old!
My daughters hair looked exactly like Alfs (those of you who are older should remember from the 80's), for the longest time. It makes sense and I'm sure it would grow back ten fold but I don't think I could do it either. =)
I don't think I would shave her head... Maybe trim the wisps a little bit... but not shave. lol. I was lucky though, and my DD was born with a pony tail... heck, she's only 2 now, and her hair is nearly waist-length!
I have noticed that the hair that USED to fall forward, and was trimmed as bangs when she was younger, is quite a bit longer and thicker than the hair on the back of her head... I have debated with trimming the bottom half of her hair to get it to grow like the rest... but I never do because I love her baby-fine curls... even if they are hidden under a layer of thick, straight hair. :P
I know that my own hair used to be stick straight, but when I cut it to my shoulders in the 5th grade, it grew back in super curly... My little sister's hair was super thin, and she cut it boy-short and now it's crazy thick! Plus, the whole half&half deal with my DD's hair where ONLY the parts I have trimmed at some point are thick while the rest is still baby-fine.... I know people will say that cutting hair has no effect on how it grows, but my personal experiences tell me differently. :)
Our neighbor's son has long curly hair. He always has had a ton of hair. For a religious ceremony, his head was shaved at age 2. I am still amazed at how fast it grew back. But on the other hand, my daughter cut her hair into a crazy mullet in April. The beautician styled it into a pixie haircut. All the ladies in the salon assured me that kid hair grows really fast when it's been cut short or shaved. Here it is 4 months later and it may be a tad longer than it was, but it's still in the pixie style.
My kids were born in AZ, we had a lot of hispanic people at my office. They all asked me why I didn't shave both kids heads when they were little, boy and girl. All my hispanic co-workers shaved their babies heads. It's a cultural thing. My daughter was a furry little monkey, so she needed no help growing hair. My son on the other hand had the strangest hair growth, looked like a little monk, I kind of wish we'd shaved it to see if it would grow in more regular looking.
No, but we did trim the hair on my niece when she was an infant.. It was all uneven as it started to grow in and so my sister and I trimmed it to make it even on the bottom.. I cannot stand all of those uneven ends.
Just because it grows that way, does not mean you cannot trim it up to make it look cute.
My DD did not have weird hair when she was 1. I did not shave it but I think it's cultural.
Granted I give birth to little monkeys but I always just trimmed the longer stuff until it all evened out. They had pig tails by six months. :p
Shaving just seems an extreme way to do what I did. It is all kind of rag tag at that age anyway so I am not professionally evening it isn't like anyone noticed.
One of my girls had very thin fine hair and I cut it short but she was not bald and had hair, just thinner. I did cut it like a short hair cut to her chin maybe and it did grow thicker but I think it would have even if I left it. I just cut off the stringy longer parts. I wouldn't shave it if it was me as it will thicken up in time probably. I don't know too many babies with great hair cuts anyhow. :-)
No, I wouldn't do it but I know hispanic moms who have done it in my area.
I have never heard of such a thing. My husband is from the Philippines (moved to the US when he was 13). My MIL has never said anything about my daughters hair and she never said anything about HER daughters hair (my SIL). My MIL is 1 of 4 girls and not even 1 of my husband aunts has ever said anything like that either.
If you like her hair, then just leave it. I wouldn't want to shave my baby's head
sure. i mean, it wouldn't be a likely thing. but if there was a good reason to do it, health or weird growth pattern or something, i would. 1 year olds are usually bald anyway, if it made my life easier i'd totally do it.

No. When my older girls were babies, the doctor we saw was from the middle east--not sure which country. She told us that she shaved her daughter's head to have the hair come in thicker. I never did that . One of my girls had a full head of hair and the other was pelona. Oops, sorry, peach fuzz. Her hair later came in like Shirley Temple. Their hair was thin and yes it is hard to fix up when it is all different lengths. But it started getting thicker around 8 yrs old. They got their first haircut at 10 yrs old. Now they have beautiful hair and get compliments on it. The one that had the full head has hair so thick I cannot braid it and it is almost to her waist. My 4 yr old has finer hair and I wonder what it will be like as she gets older.
My son who is 10 months had some crazy hair. It was like a natural mohawk. It drove my husband crazy. He is hispanic and wanted to shave it all off. It is very common with Hispanics. I wouldn't let him and we ended up just getting it trimmed and shaped up. I would not shave her head. If mine had been a girl I wouldn't have cut it at all, I could of just use a headband or barret to keep it out of his eyes.
I had bald baby girls too. I had heard about shaving their heads from my MIL but I never did it. I thought about it, but could not bring myself to do it.
I'm actually glad I didn't because my youngest had crazy curly hair. It was cute and a great memory to me. Now, although its still curly, its not crazy curly like it was when it first started growing out.
My almost 5 year old daughter had peach fuzz for hair for almost the first two years of her life. Now, it is sooooo thin and barely past her shoulders and I've NEVER cut it...People told me to cut it early, but I couldn't bring myself to do it because she literally had NOTHING to cut! Not sure what I would do if I could go back in time...Can't shave it and try again now though, lol! :)
I think that shaving and other things like that are old wives tales.
Hair gets thicker and darker with age. Some people shave every day and never have thick dark hair anywhere. Other people shave once in a great while and they still have the same amount of hair on their legs and underarms they had in high school.
Shaving the head would take off all the wispy hairs. The hairs that grow back would show more just because they would not be under all the peach fuzz and would stand out more.
She is almost at that stage where it is going to start coming in better anyway. If you want to shave it now would be the time so it would be like growing a completely new head of hair. It would look different no matter what you did with it.
Nope, I wouldn't do it. My baby is 16 mos, and I just took him for his first haircut last month, as he had a mullet too. He has gorgeous curls, and I was so afraid they wouldn't come back. So, I had the stylist just trim and even it out a bit, and now it looks fantastic! He still has his curls! :) :)
While I was there I noticed a little Indian girl getting her head shaved. She screamed through the whole thing, and our stylist said lots of Indian kids are brought in when they turn 1 to get shaved. I. could. never. shave. a. baby. But that's just me. I was bald until I was 2. I love that my boys have luscious locks :)
