My female cat just got spayed....how can I keep her from licking her wound? What other kinds of things should I keep in mind fo her or do for her? Remember Im new with cats....she is our first one....thanks
Is it ok I put a washrag wrapped around her belly with some tape since they didnt give her an ecollar..Its not tight...what do you think?
Thank you everyone for the advice.....she pretty much left it alone and now about a week later...she seems to be doing fine. She never liked that paper in the litter box idea the vet told us to do so we kept her litter in there...thankfully it didnt seem to irratate anything....keep an eye for my posts bc I always seem to have cat questions. Thanks again!!!
Put a baby onesie on her if you have any. :-) Then tomorrow you can get her a cone of shame at the pet store.
She needs an e-collar - the "cone of shame". You can pick one up from your vet.
EDITED TO ADD: You can sometimes get an e-collar from the pet store. Or you can try putting a baby shirt over her that will cover the incision and will be snug enough that she can't just move it out of the way and get at the sutures.
Give your vet a call in the morning too or stop by a pet store tonight or tomorrow to pick up an ecollar if she is licking. Try and keep her quiet and from jumping as much as possible, but cats have their own mind so good luck. I'm sure she will heal quickly!
Just let her do her thing. She will take care of herself and will move/jump/play in a way that won't hurt her. Just keep an eye on the incision for infection or the stitches coming undone. If you notice anything, call the vet.

A sweat sock with the toe cut out and slipped over her abdomen like a leg warmer would work better than the washcloth, but you've got the right idea.
Bitter apple spray deters some animals from licking wounds. You can get it at any pet store.
Is she just licking or is she chewing and pulling? Licking (I think but check with your vet) is ok and natural. Chewing and pulling at the stiches would be a problem though and she might need the cone.
Becareful, if she is chewing and pulling, is can cause life issues. My oldest's first cat (got her for her when she was not even a year old) got spayed and pulle dher stitches out che tore something and still 17 years later has random days where theres blood in her stool, and she can't control when she poops then either.

there is also a bitter stuff you can put around the wound but not on it.

We had a cat spayed years ago. The vet put this band thing on her. it was almost like a tube sock that had the foot cut off. You could try something like that but with a wider sock or use an ace bandage. Our current cat didn't bother her wound. Of course, she doesn't bother anything else either. :)
I'd call the vet and ask why she was not given an ecollar for at least 4 days. Usually a spay needs at least 4 days of being left alone before it's ok for cat to start licking.
