Yet Another Truancy Update

I just got a stuttering, nervous call from the "administrator" of the court ordered class. She tried to back down from asking me to pay twice, without ever copping to the fact that she was trying to take advantage of taxpayers. Bottom line - she said your done, your paid ion full, just show up to class. So, I guess maybe my loud rant yesterday did a little good, but only for me. What about all the other unsuspecting parents that are too afraid to stand up for themselves? This Judge and his Cronies are pulling this scam on anyone that will let them. Plus, The class is still bogus. I think I'm going to contact my State Representative and see if they can make some sort of an inquiry, without using my name. I still have to go back before this judge and he still has power over me. Since he obviously made a call on my behalf, (to save his own butt) it wouldn't be wise to piss him off.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My children 4 and 5 were late to school. I haven't offered much in a way of explanation, because I don't feel I need to. I'm not trying to excuse myself. In Texas, missing any combination of 3 days or parts of days within a 4 wk period is considered truant. My kids were late. I am the adult. it is my responsibility. I have never said it was unfair that I was in this position. It's pretty excessive, IMO. In going through this process, I have found some serious problems that need to be addressed. I don't need to come here to discuss how to get kids to school on time. I'm 41 yrs old. I don't owe any explanations and dont need anyones approval. I just wanted to talk to my friends on this site to get thier input and insight. And I've gotten it! Thanks yall. You've been so helpful. I appreciate you all so much.

So you have made the conscious decision not to cooperate and act like a know it all? Then you deserve what you are getting.

The system is no doubt flawed. However, your children were truant. I suggest that instead of facing up to the wrong doing, you're creating drama and making the situation all about someone else's fault. What is your responsibility in all this? Let's hear what you've learned about keeping your children in school and how you could've prevented this action in the first place.

You can spend time and energy fighting the system or you can learn your lesson and move on. Fighting the system will not change anything for you. The system is much stronger than any one person. You alone cannot change it.

I suggest that the message you're giving your children is that they can do what they want because the system is flawed. Fight instead of accepting responsibility for your actions. It's always someone else's fault. Is that what you want them to learn?

I do not live in Texas, and I don't know about the school, but I was falsely accused or my child was of being truant and I brought my child to school everyday!! Perhaps he was dawdling outside the room and came in late. To this day I don't know. So, I went into the teacher after I received a nasty letter and this was about fifteen years ago and gave the teacher a separate calendar for her to mark down what time he came in and then I escorted him to the classroom door and she did it. Strange, the principal went in and pulled it down and threw it out according to the teacher. Well, this never happened again. sometimes we do have to bark about a few things. But your post brought up my original feeling of humiliation, and how we do have to dare to speak up. Four and five year olds do not exactly have the ability to hang out by the alley and smoke cigarettes. That is my picture of truancy LOL. I think there are a lot of other things in life that are very important that taxpayers can spend money on.

T. - I've been reading about your saga, and all I can say is WOW. Something is truly wrong in this whole process. If you have a minute, can you explain how your kids (one kid? two?) were classified as 'truant'? Could you have said they were out sick? I'm not questioning your story... just do not understand how Texas does this. Thanks!

Ask for the documentation in writing to CYA!! Call her back (until you receive it) and tell her what you need for your "peace of mind" and to cover your legal responsibilities.

I pick my battles but this would probably be one of them.

Alright you are just attention seeking now! :p Just kidding. :)

I think you are right that they will give in to cover their butts. Normally I don't like unsigned letters but in this case I think it is the safe thing to do.

I completely understand your practical POV. My only comment is that this approach is what is wrong with us as a nation. As long as our butts are out of the frying pan then we move on. The system knows this. The system uses this to their advantage.

I mean this as no criticism whatsoever. Your situation just gets me steamed.

Glad that you've at least made some progress.

I would still consider enlisting a lawyer and withdrawing my plea.

PS: I'd want to FOIA ("freedom of information act") request who runs that program, how it is funded, the ownership and structure of the entity, etc. In Florida we have "sunshine" laws pertaining to the operation of our government. I wonder what Texas has. Just a thought.

Well I am glad you only had to pay in once. It is crazy if your child is late or considered absent for the day which at my kids school means not being there before 10am. If they leave after 10am they are not counted absent for the day. It's crazy!!!! Even when they have bad weather days if they go to school and get sent home they will do their best to keep them till 10am. But if you get them there 5 mins late too much you are in trouble.

I would still go to the media. Did you pay for the class at all? If not, then he's trying to buy you by not making you pay at all.

I would keep shouting it to the roof tops about this shady jerk!
