Your Favourite Picture Books on Haloween?

Hi Ladies,

we currently live outside the US but plan to celebrate Haloween, of course. What is your favourite picture book on Haloween? I am looking for books that will clue my kids into the custom (cause the surrounding Austrian culture has very little, and possibly different Haloween cult) and will not be too scary. I have a boy (almost 5) and a girl (will be three next March), and they are both sensitive and will find things too scary or suspenseful easily. They love books.

So, i 'd be grateful if you share your favourites with me -- especially if you briefly give some information on the books and say why you like them.

Thanks so much!!
D.

We love the book "Goodnight Goon." It's a spoof of the classic children's book "Goodnight Moon" so most kids are familiar with the story line, but instead of saying goodnight to the cows jumping over the moon, you say goodnight to the "martians taking over the moon." And there is a "hat and a shoe and a pot full of goo and a hairy old werewolf whispering boo!"

It's adorable.

I think a nice little picture book for that age is Corduroy's Best Halloween Ever. It's not scary at all - it shows the characters thinking about what costumes they want to wear, and has a nice little lesson about friendship in the end when Corduroy let's his friend use his costume. First they're at a Halloween party, and then they go out trick-or-treating - so you see different ways it is celebrated also. It's only about $4-$5 in softcover. We even got one with a CD where the child could read along.

Moonlight the Halloween Cat, by Cynthia Rylant --very simply written, yet enchanting --you really get the mood of clear fall night and Halloween (I love all her books); A Halloween Happening, by Adrienne Adams --shows how positive and magical witches can be; Both are beautifully illustrated, too. Mousekin's Golden House, Edna Miller --not really a Halloween book, it's about a mouse who makes his house out of an leftover jack-o-lantern, but it is just so dear. I love nature stories. I got it from the library and I really want to own it. It's a classic, for sure.

Our daughter loved Who Said Boo? It's a lift-the-flap board book though, so you're kids might be too old for it? It's cute though--especially if you use fun voices.

Our favorite is We're off to find the witch's house. It is really cute, with little kids dressed up in costumes running into other kids in costumes on their way to a halloween party. My 3 year old loves it.

My kids love, love, love Happy Halloween Curious George. I pack it away with our decorations because otherwise we'd have to read it nightly year round! :) Happy Halloween!
