Curling Lashes and Mascara..

I used to work at the Sephora corporate office and had the good fortune to sit next to the guy who was the director of training for all the stores. Here is what he taught me to do, and it works great.

First, buy a Shu Uemura eyelash curler. It's the best one, hands down. I think it costs around $15-20 and lasts forever.

When you curl your eyelashes, start close to your eyelid (but not so close that it pulls on your eyelid). Squeeze the curler for just a second and then release. Repeat this halfway down your eyelash, and then once more close to the tip of your eyelash. This way the entire eyelash is curled.

Then, use Maybelline Great Lash mascara with the curved wand. Start close to your eyelid and wiggle the wand back and forth as you go from lid to tip of the lash. (The wiggle will coat your eyelash all the way around.) Note: there is no reason on earth to buy expensive mascara - every makeup artist I've ever seen for runway or photo shoots uses Great Lash.

If you are going to do a second coat of mascara, do it while the first coat is still wet, otherwise it will clump. You probably only need the second coat on the upper lashes, toward the outside of the eye.

Don't use the curler when you've already put mascara on. As you have seen, it sticks and can even pull the eyelashes out.

I have found this trick that works... Use the lash curler like a curling iron- heat it first with a blow dryer! Gently heat the iron, hold the iron tightly on your lashes and let them cool completely before applying the mascara in a "curling motion" (think twirl rather than paint).

Let's just start by saying that ALL mascara commercials have the models with FAKE lashes on. So, real lashes will never see the same results....

With that said, I was told to start with a clear mascara.....powder your face & lashes (mineral powder is great and light), do your eye makeup minus eye liner....curl your lashes...then apply the mascara in color of your choice moving the wand side to side to avoid clumping starting at the base of the lash. If they are still not what you want, use fake lashes....no, not the ones with sparkles for halloween....find ones that are close to your natural color and just a bit longer.

When you put them on, do it before the clear mascara stage and do the rest as usual. The mascara should be applied to your real lashes and fake ones at the same time.

I understand how you feel! My lashes do the same thing! (And you want to make sure you don't curl your lashes after you apply your mascara. It could pull out your lashes.) What I have found that worked for me is to over-curl my lashes before applying mascara. That way when the lashes begin to relax they would not relax all the way. Also helpful was that I would use Mary Kay's Ultimate Mascara first then top it off with a coat of MK's Waterproof Mascara (not a commercial, just what I use) If this doesn't work, you may want to try a heated lash curler. This is used after you apply your mascara... so think of it as a curling iron for your lashes! LOL But it does work well and I use it when I go out at night.

Try a lighter weight mascara. One for lengthening or a "natural" looking one. If you are using one to make them thicker or have more volume, it may be too heavy a formula and is weighing on your lashes. When I have my lashes in the curler, I look down w/ my eyes to get maximum curl, then apply one coat of mascara. Some people just have really straight lashes and don't hold a curl for long. Try Clinique's Naturally Glossy Mascara or High Impact Curling formula.
Never curl your lashes after you apply mascara, they can stick and come out!

I read a lot of the answers and didn't see this one yet. I have no idea why this is, but my mom and I both found that our eyelashes go super straight if we don't use waterproof mascara. I also put loose powder on my lashes first to soak up any oil. Hope this helps!

Back when I had TIME to put on makeup (yea for you!) I got a fancy eyelash curler at Sephora with silicone pads... they don't stick to the mascara already on the lashes (which is how they instructed me to do it). These day's I'd just like a 'date" with one of my old purses much less a made-up face :P

I have the same problem! After many (many) years of practice, I now have a technique. First off, Bobby Brown has the best eyelash curler I've ever tried! I start by putting a small amount of moisturizer on my eyelashes before I curl them (I use vaseline), this seems to make my eyelashes curl better. Then I put my face powder over it so my eyeliner will stick. When I finally curl them, I apply just one light coat of mascara and let that dry before I add anymore. If I accidentally apply it too heavily on the first application, I can literally watch my eyelashes "unbend"! I also clean my eyelash curler after every use, then my lashes (which are few and far between) don't stick to the curler during the next use.

Have you tried Avon's Super Curlacius Mascara? It curls without lash curlers and make lashes curier.

Lash curling mascara is the easiest solution.

Oh...the pain of beauty :o) I have the same problem! I tried everything, and sometime they stay curled and somwtimes they don't!

I found someone (my nail lady) who "perms" eyelashes....hilarious huh? Well, I tried it and it lasts for about 2-3 months........well worth the cost of a mere $40 (here in Modesto). I recommend it for any woman-on-the-go to have this done as it is a HUGE timesaver, and a summer blessing!

Other than that, it's curling before mascara and sometimes after, too :o)

Try Clinique high definition lashes. It works great. 1/2 is a brush and the other 1/2 is a comb. I use the brush side first and then the comb. It makes them curl and look nice and long. I think its around $10-13.

I have heard of warming the curler first. Also, curl close to eye and then at tips of lashes. I have discovered the best mascara. I love it and have it in bulk. Costco sells it at a great deal. Covergirl Lash Blast mascara rocks. My lashes always look great and full. HTH's!

Maybe you should tint your eyelashes. That is what I do and it lasts for about 2 months and runs about $20 in the bay area.

I have tried many different types of mascaras with no success. I found out its the first ingrediant they put in ie water. A brand that has worked for me is Maybelline Full'n soft but must be waterproof. You can curl your eyelashes how you like them them and apply the first coat, if you like them to look fuller apply a second coat. But you will have to use makeup remover to take off mascara will not come off with water. I have found that if you gently swipe on the remover and let it sit for about 30 seconds it will come off easier. Good luck

Same thing is happening to me lately so I just curl them really good with a lash curler and sometimes I use the clear gel mascara. That seems to work better.

When I curl my lashes I make sure to leave the lash curler in place for about 5 seconds. Then use a curling mascara like benefit get bent mascara.

I too sometimes have that issue. I find that the lashes need to be completely dry. I then curl them and wait a few minutes before applying mascara (I'll curl my lashes then dry and style my hair, then do mascara). I also take all the excess mascara off the wand and let it "dry" a little. Then I very slowly (very very slowly) apply the mascara, while trying to keep the curl. I think what this does is, that it lets the mascara dry while you are holding the curl of the lash - if that makes sense. I used a curved brush. Good luck.

I learned, as a Mary Kay independent beauty consultant, a way to make lashes look a little curlier without using a curler. First, go over the lashes with the wand sideways as usual, maybe going back and forth to get mascara on the sides and make the lashes look thicker. Then, turn the wand up and down. With the handle up and the brush side down, go over the lashes again. This gets the mascara to the tips, and makes the lashes look curlier.

If you lightly heat the curler with a hair dryer, the lashes will stay curled for longer. But be careful...the curler can get pretty hot, so test with your finger first.
