"Desperately Seeking a Good Deodorant/antiperspirant"

I am desperate for a deodorant/antiperspirant that REALLY works. Ever since I became pregnant and had my son two years ago, I sweat profusely. Now, I'm talking the sweat runs down my arms or my sides. And I smell worse than my fiance after a 10 hour day at work. (He's a laborer!!) I have tried the Degree clinical strength... NOTHING!!! I sometimes use a combination of a regular stick and the aerosol, and reapply throughout the day. I refuse to raise my arms when I hug family and friends, I carry deodorant with me wherever I go, and I am forced to change shirts, sometimes even bras, a couple times a day. As you can imagine, this is very embarrassing. I am going back to work soon, and I would like to resolve this issue before I am in a position where I will be unable to change shirts, etc.

What can I do next?

I recommend going to Whole Foods and look in their deodorant section. They stock a variety of deodorants in different price ranges that don't contain the harmful ingredients that most antiperspirants contain. I use an all vegetable roll-on that I found there and I have been very happy.

Oh, this sounds familiar! My hormones did something crazy after the twins were born, too. Try Secret Clinical Strength. Within a week, I no longer had the profuse sweating. It worked (and is still working) great for me.

Maybe try Secret Clinical Strength. Also, something else that seems to work for me is to change deoderants each time one is gone. Also, my T-shirts get stained under the arms so I have to get rid of them as soon as a regular wash cycle doesn't get the underarm odor out. I've heard white vinegar sprayed under the arms prior to laundering might help, but I'm not totally convinced. Good luck.

I developed he same problem after my 2nd. I thought I was going crazy. I tried every deoderant on the market. I had a friend that was a pharmacist and he reccommended that I get a perscription for "Dry Sol". It actually stops sweating under the arms. I don't know if that's a good thing to do, but I did use it for my brothers wedding, I didn't want the "pit stains" on my dress. You put it on a couple of nights in a row and wear a tight white cotton t-shirt. It stops the sweat for a while, then it slowly comes back. Maybe ask your dr. for that if you have a special occassion, or to get started. Then, the Secret Clinical came out. I LOVE it! It cost $7.00, but is the best money spent. They do sell it in a pack of 3 at Sams Club for a somewhat reduced price. It says to use it at night, I don't, I use it in the am. but since your sweating is so bad, I would do it at night, and in the am at first.

Good luck, and know that you are not alone in the big bad world of sweating!!!

Renee,
You are not alone. I sweat at my hair line/scalp and my face really bad. Go see your Dr and have your thyroid checked first to rule that out. I am taking a prescription drug called ROBINUL. My brother is a PA and my family DR gave me the prescription. It really does work if you take it as prescribed. It is used for ulcers, IBS and other things but the side effect is decreased sweating adn the pharmascist said he fills this drug alot for people with 'sweat issues.'
Good luck and I know how you feel!

Our body chemistry can change quite a lot after having children. Please see your doctor. Maybe it's a hormonal imbalance, but I'm sure your doctor may have some options for you.

Good luck. :)

Don't feel bad. I had a problem with a vaginal odor after my second child and found out that many other women had the same problem. I'm sure you are not alone.

Talk to your doctor - there are prescription deodorants out there. I had issues at my last job (high stress and an outdated HVAC system) so my doc gave me something that I only needed to use occasionally. Talk to her/him about it!

Certain Dri - it comes in a white box, you can get it at CVS or Target (probably other places too). I can always find it in stock in CVS. It is usually on the bottom shelf and sometimes hard to find. It is heavy duty, you have to listen to the directions because it will hurt your skin if you don't use it correctly, but believe me it does work.

Hi! Have you tried Certain Dri antiperspirant? It is sold at drug stores, like CVS or WalGreens and I recently bought it at Target (wal-mart may have it as well). It is in with the regular deodorants but usually up high or down low. It is in a box (there is a roll-on inside) and the box is white, red and green. You put it on at night and it takes a few days to work but it turns off your sweat glands under your arms (where you put it). It really works for me and gives me more confidence. If that doesn't work, you can go to a dermatologist and get a prescription strength antiperspirant.

Best of luck, read the directions on the certain dri before you use it since it is different from standard ones.

Humm this is tough. While I cannot reccommend any deodorant/ anitperspirant, I will share with you something I have learned. My daughter loves to watch any wedding shows-so I let her opposed to the endless teen shows that carry on about the most pettiest stuff. And I have watched more than once about women who suffer from sweating issues such as your self and their concerns as to getting married and sweating through their dresses and their make-up smearing and such due to these circumstances and the procedure to fix it...Botox! Wild huh? Now I am not one to be big on doing anything like this but I wouldn't pass it up if it was going to help in a personal situation such like this. So if anything, I would make an appt. with a specialist who deals with Botox and see. You never know. Just a thought.
Hope you can find a remedy.

It sounds like you have a condition called hyperdidrosis - it's actually more common than you think.Your doctor can give you a prescription for deodorant. It's called Drysol. When nothing else works, this will but it can only be given to you by a doctor.

I'm in the same boat. I use Certain Dry every other evening to keep things in check. It is really uncomfortable for me when I first put it on, though. But, I believe that the few moments of discomfort are worth not having to worry all day. When I was pregnant, I took the container in to my OB/GYN to make sure it wasn't harmful to use during pregnancy and my dr said it was fine. Feels a little weird, but totally worth it.

Good luck. I hope you find something that works for you.

I bought a product called Certain Dri on drugstore.com a few years ago and I was amazed at how well it actually worked!! It's not like a regular deodorant, you put it on at night before bed and I think it helps close up the pores so you release less sweat. It irritated my skin a bit in the beginning but it worked so well it was worth it! Eventually my skin got used to it and it doesn't bother me at all now. I definitely recommend this product, just be sure to follow the directions carefully. Good luck!! Also, it is not expensive at all!

Hi Renee,
I have 2 words for you - CERTAIN DRY! It's an antiperspirant that you can get at any drugstore, and usually grocery stores too. Look closely for it on the bottom or top shelves (in a box) - it's usually not heavily stocked. This product changed my life, as I could have written your post a few years ago, and was also dying of embarrassment. I didn't understand what was happening to me! I would shower, get dressed, and literally sweat to the point of being drenched on my way to work - even in an air conditioned car!?! Like you, I'd tried every deoderant out there, with no results. I mentioned my problem to my sister once, and she said her husband's doctor had recommended Certain Dry to him for the same problem. I tried it the very next day, and could not even BELIEVE how good it worked. Your underarms will be bone dry for the entire day after you use it (apply at night before bed), and even the next day. This product definitely stings when you first use it, but that diminishes after your body gets used to it. The sting is uncomfortable at first, but totally worth it to not be drenched! I now use Certain dry just every now and then (2x/week) and don't have any problems with over-sweating. (I use regular deoderant in between). I also always use it the night before any big event, such as my wedding. I can defintely say Certain dry finally allows me to enjoy myself in social situations. I truly hope this helps you - I so understand your pain!!

Hi Renee, I have found that Dove works well for me, give it a try. But I am really responding to your note because I sweat so much now, too! I was so happy to see that someone else is going through the same thing and Im not some kind of freak! LOL! I am 35 y.o. and my daugther will be 2 this Thurs and I used to sweat when I was preg and thought after I had her it would go away. When it didnt, I thought my hormones were out of wack and they would go back but here it is, 2 years later and I swaet like I pig! It is so embarrasing! I sweat all over but I sweat a lot on my face which you obviosuly cant hide when your talking to someone!!!!!!!! My worst time is after I wake up in the AM. It is terrible. Just getting ready for work I am drenched! When I brought it up to my gyno a few months ago they checked my thyroid and I am fine. I NEVER used to be hot like this before I was preg, if anything I felt like I was cold. I dont know wha to do about it. Did you ask your dr about it?

Hi, I know this is crazy, but this works for me: I only wear deodorant every other day, and I switch between several of them. (Just be careful not to skip every for two days -- man, that's embarrassing). I tried this because I noticed that even when I would go for stronger and stronger deodorants, I would just sweat through it, and I was concerned about the health risks with all that aluminum in the deodorant. I also realized that washing with antibacterial soap, like Dial, made a huge difference. Good luck!

Without a doubt, CERTAIN DRY! It works wonders. Warning: do not put on after shaving; highly recommend following the directions and put on before going to bed. It'll work the entire next morning. This would keep me completely dry, but sometimes I still put a little regular deodorant on for a pretty, fresh smell.

I have the solution to your 'problem!' Since I had my baby 9 months ago, no deodorant I previously used was successful at preventing or masking my running-ragged-mommy-smell. I have two words for you: SECRET CLINICAL! You can get it ANYWHERE they sell the Secret brand of deodorant. It's clinical strength and is AMAZING! It's quite a bit more expensive ($7 for regular size container but I paid $11 for the bigger size) It's completely invisible and works so surprisingly well that I kept doing a 'sniff check' the first couple of days I was using it and even asked my hubby to 'check' me a couple times for fear I just couldn't smell myself. You MUST TRY IT!

Hi Renee,
Have you tried using pure cornstarch powder? My husband works in VERY hot conditions. He uses Arrid XX Dry aerosol deodorant and lots of cornstarch powder.
I think you may be imagining the "smell factor" --sweat in and of itself does not smell--only if it is on a body that was not clean before it started to sweat! As long as you are showering daily, and your clothes are clean, you should be fine--I know it probably feels grubby but I doubt you smell! I remember when I was pregnant, my feet used to sweat so badly I had to change socks several times each day.
Also, since it's a hormonal thing, I'm not sure how much an anti-perspirant will actually affect the amount that you sweat. I always use Lady Speedstick and am happy with it.
Also, I think you can buy "dress shields" to use under your arms which will probably absorb much of the sweat from rolling down. Good luck!

I am going to try the Certain Dry that everyone has recommended for you, but if you find something that works - please let me know because I have had this issue for years, not just after I had my son, and I have been waiting to hear something that really works! All of the advice given is great, but what in the heck do you do if you sweat everywhere BESIDES your armpits? I am always drenched, especially in the morning. God forbid if I do some heavy house cleaning. I never smell, but everyone looks at me like I'm a freak and I feel like one too. I've tried rubbing deoderant and powder all over the trouble areas, but that doesn't work at all.

Most likely you will not find an antipersperant that will stop the sweating. I had a huge problem with this and found out about Botox. I now get Botox injected into my armpits twice a year. It is covered by insurance because it is a medical condition. It works wonderfully! I had the same issue with raising my arms, etc. My clothes were always ruined and most of all I was so self conscious about it. Now I am fine! Look into it. I currently see a Plastic Surgeon or Dermatologist for the injections.
