Issues with Sweat and Desoderants

For as long as I can remember I have always sweated more than most people. I have tried every deoderant I can find and most recently the clinical strength deoderants by degree and secret. However, as usual, they worked for a couple of months but then my body gets use to them and they stop working for me. I need some suggestions to help with the sweat issue and ideas for stronger deoderants. Is there a deoderant that my doctor can prescribe for me? I am open to ANY suggestions!

What can I do next?

My husband has a prescription product he uses at night. every night for a week then less often but the results stay the same - No Sweat! He's been using it for a while and it still works great. The bottle says Hypercare Solution, from Stratus Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Other than doing what you're doing and/ or wearing "pads" under your arms, all I know is that I had a friend who had surgery to reduce the sweating in her glands - but that was for her hands, because it was causing skin problems. At least I know it's possible, but I don't know about non-specific areas. You might look into it.

I had this problem when I was a teenager. It was horrible. My doctor (dermotologist I think) prescribed an over the counter medical deodorant which I used at night. After using it less than a year (I honestly can't remember how long)the problem went away and since then I just use Dove deodorant and I'm fine. It was a liquid roll-on medicine and it stung like crazy but it was worth it. Definitely talk to your doctor.

Have you ever heard of hyperhidrosis? It's the official diagnosis/term for excessive sweating, and it's something I've dealt with all my life. One thing that really helped me for my underarms is a product called Certain-Dri, and you can pick it up at most any drug store (in the deodorant aisle). You put it on at night and then wear your regular deodorant during the day. I used this several years ago and actually don't use it because my underarms don't sweat anymore. I still have issues with my hands and feet but I won't even get into the things I've done for that! Also, if you go see a dermatologist and they diagnose you with hyperhidrosis you can actually get botox in your armpits which will stop the sweating. Only problem is it wears off and it's super expensive. You might try looking at this web site to read more about excessive sweating: www.sweathelp.org. Good luck, I know firsthand it's not an easy thing to deal with!

M.,

I'm with you on this one. I used to run Cross Country and while my cute teammates who glow and look beautiful, I always looked like a drowned rat! My feet even sweat causing foot odor if I wear shoes without socks! If you have a solution for that, let me know. Anyway, the best deodorant that I've used is Mitchum. It is an anti-perspirant, not a deodorant and I do not smell when I wear that. It stops the sweat, although some people say that's not safe. I don't know but it's the only thing that has solved my problem.

M. C,

I don't sweat more than normal, at least not that I know of. :-)

My mom introduced me to a deodorant cream and I've been using it ever since. It doesn't stop your sweating, it isn't an antiperspirant, it's only a deodorant. I don't mind the sweating, just don't like the stinkin'. :-)

It's called Lavilin, and I think the main ingredient is potato starch. You can find it at health stores.

I love it!

I had the same problem in high school and college. I used a product called Drysol - I think it was a prescription. And it sounds very much like what Dawn described. Our thought was that it worked along the same lines as botox - it killed off (temporarily?) the sweat glands. I will say that as bad as it was in HS (it was AWFUL) - I don't really have a problem now (I'm 40). In fact, I only wear anything if I'm going out.

Are you more concerned about the wetness or the odor? I tend to perspire more than most as well, but only use anti-perspirants occassionally when I need to stay dry. I have found Liquid Rock roll-on natural deoderant is absolutely fantastic in keeping the odors down (it actually prevents the growth of bacteria which is what causes the odor). It works so well, that I can apply it when I am feeling less than fresh and it will take away any odor.

Since making peace with sweat means getting a little wet, I tend to prefer to wear darker colored clothing since lighter colors (pastels and such) will show off sweat. Also keep in mind that sweating is healthy - antiperspirants, on the other hand are not super healthy b/c they prevent sweat and contain aluminum.

My sister has gotten botox injecions in her armpits to prevent sweating. She said it worked very well. But you have to go in every so often to get more injections because it only lasts for a little while, I believe it was like 3 or 6 months. Also, my co-worker had a problem with sweaty feet and hands and she had botox injections in her hands and feet and that helped with her sweating. I know it is kind of expensive and some insurance companies won't cover it, but I hear it is worth it.

Yes, there is a prescription deodorant called Drysol. It works really well, my use of it tapered off and hardly need to use it now. Ask your doctor about it.

I've had this issues since I was a teenager. When I was in high school, my mom took me to a dermatologist, and he prescribed a prescription-strength antiperspirant that I had to put on at night, wrap in plastic wrap - and it tingled and stung all night long. And it worked, but only temporarily.

Now, you can dry over-the-counter antiperspirant, it's called Certain Dry. You apply it at night (you don't have to wrap it in plastic, thank goodness), and it lasts a week or so.

The only permanent fix for this problem is surgery or botox injections in your armpits - and I'm not keen on either. I just use the Certain Dry on occasion and regular deodorant/antiperspirant daily. And just a hint of good news, this condition does get better as you age. I've lived with this for almost 30 years, and it's definitely not as bad as it was in my teens and twenties.

Before you got get a prescription try certain dry from walmart. It works great. I sweat so bad even the though of going outside makes me have to change my shirt cause it is soaked but Certian dry helps tons. U use it at nite. I do right before bed cause it stings and I fall asleep before the discomfort kicks in. In the morning after I shower I apply a deodrant to help with bacteria but you dont have to.

Just make sure that what your are using is an anti-perspirant. There is a difference between a deodorant - Which just masks the small of the sweat - and an anti-perspirant which blocks the pores or absorbs the sweat. Most things that "leave not residue" are just deodorants.

Did you try using the degree at night? I have the same problem and i use the clinical degree, but i put it on at night so it absorbs into the pores and then again in the morning. It has worked alot better than just using in the morning. Just 2 clicks. Good Luck!!
