Hey mamas I'm looking for help with my tub. MY bathtub has this gray color. don't know if its from hard water or what???? and the only thing I've found that works is CLR. Unfortunately I have no windows or ventilation in my bathroom so it is really hard to clean the tub and still be able to breath. any ideas on what is just as powerful but not as strong smelling

What can I do next?

I find that Krud Kutter will take anything out of the tub, my kids got latex paint (washing it off themselves) in my brand new bathtub and it attracted everything and my beautiful white tub was so grey and ugly so fast I wanted to cry. No matter what cleaner, bleach, anything I used, nothing cleaned it. Then I found Krud Kutter and it was gone in minutes. I found it at a paint store but you may be able to find it at any hardware store.

Hello, I'd use vinegar/baking soda in mine too but have used the magic eraser and it works well too. I do have a bottle of comet under the sink but it takes so much scrubbing that I usually just put a plug in the tub and let the vinegar sit for a while then scrubbing is easy and takes less time. Hope this helps, looks like you have a lot of good advice!

We have had the same problem, and on whim my husband tried some powdered Borax. The tub sparkles for the first time in a long time. You can find it in the detergent aisle.

My husband uses Tide to clean our tub and it is amazing how well it works. It has to be the powder kind, not the liquid. Basically you sprinkle some in the tub, add just enough water to make a kind of paste and spread it around. If the tub is really bad, you can let it sit for a few minutes and then come back to it but don't let it dry on there. Scrub with a brush or spounge and then rinse. Works great!

I went all natural with my cleaners last year (vinegar, baking soda, etc.) so I use a baking soda & salt mixture to clean my tub on a regular basis, but my kitchen sink still gets stains after a while so I just couldn't bring myself to get rid of my "Barkeeper's Friend" (it's like Comet, only I think it works better-- look for a shiny gold label). It does a great job getting rid of the stains-- especially if I wet the sink down, sprinkle it on, swirl it around so it becomes a paste and let it sit for a bit. It does NOT have a strong odor, so you might want to give it a try. Good luck!

I have the same problem and i use mr. clean majic erasers. They have no smell and they work great you don't even have to scrub that had it just come of with ease.

Absolutely! I just started using Kaboom. It seriously works awesome! I got off hard water stains/soap scum that I thought would never come off and was just part of the tub. I've lived in my house for 2 1/2 years and just now made my tub SNOW WHITE! The smell isn't bad either (thats what it says on the bottle too). You spray it on and wipe it off within a few minutes. I used CLR too...fumes were horrible and it did a horrible job. Try it. Let me know how it works.

I would try Mr. Clean Magic Erasers (or there are store-brand ones too.) I know they're great for getting soap scum off the bottom of our textured, acrylic tub and they seem to brighten whatever I use them on with no chemicals. It will take some elbow grease, but maybe not as much as you'd think. And they're not too expensive either. Hope this helps!

Sounds silly but you might try an entire box of efferdent. If it will clean teeth enamel it will probably clean your tub. I have used it to clean coffee pots and some dirty pyrex and it works really well. You can try using a couple of tablets in the bottom of the tub with maybe an inch or so of water first. If it cleans it then you know you are safe to go with a big box. Once it's clean you probably will not have to do it for quite awhile so despite the fact that it may be a bit on the pricy side it would be worth it if you didn't have to look at the gray tub. If worse comes to worse I would check into professional painting or replacement of the tub.

Good luck

I vote for the baking soda/vinegar, or borax. They work great.
I have also heard you can slice a grapefruit in half, dip it in course salt and then use it to scrub. Supposedly does a great job, but I have not yet tried it myself, so don't know for sure just yet.

I like the borax idea. Also Baking Soda or Washing Soda (which is just stronger, but you should wear gloves with it) do wonders for our bath tub. No harmful fumes, just baking soda and water or sometimes I use a little dr bonner's liquid soap to smell good...

get it clean with CLR then use a squeegie everyday to get the water off after you shower so the water doesn't turn it brown again or you can also wipe down the shower walls and tub with your towel after each shower. I know it takes more effort but only takes a few minutes extra and it definately makes a difference. My MIL has hard water and her shower will turn within a few days so she requests that everyone wipes down the shower walls when they are finished taking a shower or if everyone is in line for a shower the last one can wipe it down. Her shower looks sparkling clean all the time and only takes a few extra minutes of effort to keep it that way.
We don't do that at home but the showers get cleaned weekly so they never get bad.

Hi C.,

What I have found that works the very best is a little Comet Bathroom cleaner (no bleach) and then Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. That little gizmo is the best thing in the world, and it will not scratch your tub! Good luck!

Every bathtub is different, but I had "issues" with my bathtub - I tried everything just to look clean. Then I tried this ... spray your bathtub with Scrubbing Bubbles, let is set, then wipe it clean with a Magic Eraser. I know, it sounds kind of weird - but try it - you will be surprised! Also note, you might go through a couple of them - I did!

Oxyclean will work just as well. I fill my tub to the line where it's dirtiest and add a bunch of Oxyclean and let it sit...then as it has cooled and is draining take a scrub brush to it or some kind of scouring pad...the grime will come right off! You can also just make the Oxyclean into a paste but honestly, I find it takes just as much elbow grease as letting it soak does. No fumes, no mess.
