My daughter was just diagnosed with legg calve perthies. spelling is off sorry. My doc wanted to run blood work and on a mommy hunch I asked him to run a thyroid test because of her weight issues and always being tired. Her thyroid came back low and the endocronologist I saw today has me freaked with all these weird test that he wants to run. I just can not find a connection any where for bone disorders an thyroid problems. He some how thinks there connected. All googling is doing is freaking me out and each appointment one for the ortho and one for the endo seem so far away. Is it perthies or something else I'm scared to death and I feel like things are moving so slow. Does anyone know of any relations between the two?

What can I do next?

Its time to take a deep breath and relax for a minuet. You can trust your daughter's health in the hands of trained physicians. They are the ones to make a diagnosis, google and webMD are great tools, but they don't replace a human analysis. They can very easily freak you out. This happens to both nursing and medical students, they feel like they have all the diseases they're studying about because often symptoms are common things we all experience. They're going to run lots of tests to be sure that she's okay, and to rule out weird things. Often symptoms can indicate tons of different diseases, so they have to rule things out until they discover what it is.

If there was something that needed immediate attention, they'd drop everything and make sure she got the care immediately. So the fact that you have to wait a few days for each appointment means that nothing is that urgent.

Best wishes, I know it can eat at you, but try to stay calm and collected. You'll get some answers soon!

I am in PTA school right now and in my pathology class we just learned about that, all that i have read about it is that the bone of the head of the femur is dead, basically causing hip pain, and possible arthritis down the road, the big thing is keeping the head of the femur in the socket. have you started physical therapy yet?

It is amazing if the thyroid is not functioning properly how it affects our body. By bone disorders does he mean low bone density? As far as her being tired that makes sense if she has hypothyroidism. Why does he want to do all these tests? Can he address the thyroid issue and see if that corrects the "bone disorders"?

Simple things like her diet (what she eats and drinks), is she involved in a sport or does she exericise?

The internet can be great and it can be a curse as well. If you would like to speak with a person to help you, I'm here. Email me and we can set up a time to exchange numbers and talk.

They could be completely unrelated. I am 6 months cancer free. Thyoid cancer free. The only 2 symptoms I had that I (That's a emphasized I) noticed, I gained weight and was exausted. See your Dr. See any Dr. you are refered to, have every test, be patient with the dr., but trust your instincts.
You are afraid of the unknown. And that is normal and natural.

I'm starting over with my post. In my earlier post I suggested that the two are unrelated. I found a site that does talk about legg perthes and the thyroid. I found this site by googling" legg perthes and thyroid." There are several sites listed. I explored just one listing.

Here is an address for an abstract of a Medical Journal article that suggests to me that a child can have legg perthes OR some other condition related to the thyroid.

Here is the web address for a list of medical journal articles about the two. I looked only at the abstracts. The address above is for one of the abstracts. the other articles suggested that their studies found no connection.

Call your doctors and let them know that you are confused and anxious and ask them to explain what is happening. Make a list of questions in writing before making the calls. They should make time to talk with you. You do not need to wait for the appointments.

I can communicate with my doctors thru e-mail. I find this especially helpful because when I see something in writing I can make better sense of it. I can also reform a question based on what he does or doesn't write to me. If you have that available I suggest you send an e-mail with your questions. Be sure to tell them how upset you are so that they can tell you what you need to feel more reassured.

I understand how much this worries you. legg perthies is a serious condition and when it looks like there is more it is very frightening. You need a clear concise description of what the possibilities are and how likely those possibilities are. I think phone calls to each one will greatly help you to have a .better understanding.

There is a reference to hypothyroidism and Legg Calve Perthes disease (LCPD) in the link below. I'm really not sure how much of help it will be. If I do find anything else, I will pass it on.

http://www.orthoseek.com/articles/perthes.html

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8376558 (this one is a bit technical - but in essence it says there is a relationship between thyroid and LCPD)

Please see if this link if of help as well.
