So What Happened?

He went to the pediatrician, who was not concerned. She suggested the vibrating wake-up thingie. The first question out of her mouth was whether he is a deep sleeper, which he sure is. We had very recently moved his bedtime back an hour, and he was dry, then he wet the bed after going to sleep after 9:45 p.m. So that might be a factor, too. They took a urine sample to check for diabetes, which he doesn't have. At this point I'm going to try putting him to bed at 8:30 and see what happens, and then get the vibrating thingie if that doesn't work. Thanks for all the help! :-)

My 10 year old still has accidents occasionaly, my 7 year old wets the bed almost everynight. We still have him in pull ups too, and he wets out of them about once a week. It is frustrating, but it is not them. There is nothing that they can do about it. Unfortuantely their bladders do not always grow as fast as they do :)

Hi Karin

MY daughter also wet the be till was 12 or 13. I had her check by the doctor, just to rule out any problems. It was just that my daughter was a very deep sleeper. She did eventually grow out of it. But I used to wake her up when I
went to bed. To get her body used to getting up.

Karin-

don't worry I know first hand that your son isn't the only eight year old that still wets the bed... There is a product called "Good-Nights" made by pull-ups that is for older children that still wet the bed... Your son probably has what is called an "under developed blatter" The kid that I know that had this problem was given a steriod to help the blatter muscles grow and it worked and they didn't have that problem anymore. Allergies can also be the cause, I know it sounds weird but it's true.

I would try the "good-Nights" and talk to your peditrican about hte problem, they will be able to help you/ your son... Good luck! I hope it works for him.

I have a 14 year old daughter that wets the bed. One of my Aunts wet the bed till she was teen, my brother wet the bed tail he was like 11. My son has accidents, and my current husband wet the bed tail he was about 12.

It happens. Don't worry a lot. Talk with a urologist. There might be other issues. If there aren't, they will help give you some advice as to what to do. Most children grow out of it. It is sometimes a deep sleep issue. A urologist will help you sort things out much better then I could.

I do have the children wash their sheets. Learning to be responsible for themselves isn't a punishment, but a fact of life. I don't scold them or rant-and-rave. We found out my daughter has other problems (emotionally). We work with it. Someday she'll stop. The accident's my son has are less and less (we are talking months in-between).

Everything will be fine. Just remember, consequences for something like this can lead to more problems. Work with him, not against him. Talk with your Dr. about seeing a urologist. It will all come together.

Hi! My name is D.. My now 9 year old son wore pull ups(actually Goodnights) until he was almost 8. He was/is a sound sleeper. I tried waking him before we went to bed. I tried limiting drinks. NOTHING worked. AND he would sleep in the pee soaked bed if he did NOT have the Goodnight on. NOTHING woke him up. I learned that he has ADD(attention deficit disorder) and bedwetting past age 5 is a symptom of ADD. My DR. said the same part of the brain that is not allowing him to focus is the same part that has to wake him at night. We used an enurisis alarm that hooks on his underware and clips to his PJ top. When he starts to pee the alarm vibrates and makes alarm sounds. This did NOT wake HIM up..it woke ME up to bring him to the bathroom. The DR. said keep him AWAKE for 5 min.after he pees Make him play a game of cards or something so he is truly awake. That is the only way it will work. That coupled with the ADD med Strattera finally stopped the bed wetting. THe Strattera helps because it works with the norepinephrine in the brain. It is NOT a stim. like other meds for ADD. IT is the ONLY one that helps with the bed wetting problem and the ADD.
I am NOT saying your son HAS ADD. I am telling you what we discovered. If he was a preemie or has a unusually small bladder it could have to do with that as well.
I hope I have not rambled too much. I hope I helped a little bit. Feel free to e-mail me again if you did not understand some of my ramblings or have any more questions.

im going threw a simular problem except my daughter is 6 and its not just the bed.

i had her to the doctors for it.. even to the hospital for a test on her bladder. It came back as normal. I am following up with her doctor as soon as she gets back from vacation on Monday.

I suggest that you should contact his doctor. He could have what they call reflux. No its not the same as acid reflux, this is when the urine backs up into the kidneys when his bladder is full. So like I said, get a doctor appointment for him.

My eight year old also still wets her bed. It can be so frustrating. She has been to the doctor and tested for major issues, but there's really nothing wrong with her. The doctor said to just giver her some time. She is just a deep sleeper. It was sooooo frustrating, until one day I just realized that there is no use in getting upset. She is slowly outgrowing it (it used to be worse, beyond just the bed). We use Goodnights and now that I am pregnant, I get her up to use the bathroom during the night when I get up.

Hang in there!

You might want to have him checked for allergies. My nephew wet the bed until he was seven. At a routine check-up my sister-in-law mentioned it to the doctor. They went through the usual tests along with some allergy. Come to find out he was allergic to milk and after cutting the milk out of his diet he stopped wetting the bed!!

Hi,
My little brother had this problem. My parents tried everything from not letting him drink after a certain time, to getting a buzzer that would attach to his underwear to let him know to wake up..which he slept right through. He was also a deep sleeper, and would hide his pj's, etc. He dealt with this, I believe, until he was about 11 or 12. My only suggestion would be to maybe get him an alarm clock. Set it for sometime in the middle of the night so he can get up & go to the bathroom. Then maybe his body will eventually set to the clock by itself, and he won't have to use the clock anymore. That is my only suggestion, other then keep giving him encouragement that many kids have the same problem & he will get passed it. Good luck!

Don't fret! Bed wetting is actually a common thing among many children. My uncle and brother both wet the bed until they hit 12. You just have to be patient and diligent in helping your son wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. They are making pull ups for older children now that are having night time issues.
