My son is 6 years old and he has a high BMI. He's also been diagnosed with childhood asthma and has allergies so he is on Xyzol, Nasonex and Singulair. He sweats a lot. After 5 minutes of running his head is soaked with sweat. The pediatrician says it's because of the BMI. Anyone had such experience? Thanks a lot

What can I do next?

Your doctor is correct. Dripping sweat can be a major problem for bigger people, or anyone else who has grown unusually large (like some athletes). When you put on weight (fat or muscle), you don’t add sweat glands. As a result, those with bigger frames have a lower density of glands at the surface of their skin, with more space between each one. That means their perspiration won't cover their bodies as evenly, and they'll have to increase their sweat output to compensate. Large people also sweat more because it takes them more energy to move around. When people sweat too much, the moisture can form into rivulets and pour off, leading to dehydration and overheating. Always re-hydrate!

The thinner he gets, the more efficient his body will get at cooling itself, but even then... everyone sweats. I've also read that heredity could be a factor in how much or little someone sweats.

Does high BMI mean body mass index which indicates that he is over weight? Most over weight people sweat more because the extra layer of fat keeps the heat in which raises the body temperature which causes the excess sweat.

That being said, my grandson, who doesn't have a high BMI sweats profusely. His head is also sweating after 5 minutes of running. He doesn't like to wear a jacket and sleeps with only a light blanket.

Easily sweating is nothing to be concerned about if the child is in good health.

Excessive sweating runs in my family and unfortunately I inherited that (sure, my sister got the boobs and I got the sweat!!).

Yes, I am over weight, but even when I was thin I would sweat like Mike Tyson in a fight. I would go to the gym and be doing the same workout everyone else was doing and my t-shirt would be just soaked. It is very embarrassing at times. I have to be careful not to buy summer shirts that have a high spandex content, because those shirts really make me sweat.

After 5 minutes of running, my head is soaked with sweat, too, usually. If it is over 75 degrees out, or I am overdressed for the activity.
