Fall Blahs

Hello ladies, particularly those of the Northeast.

This is a downer unfortunately as I suffer severe seasonal affective disorder. In a misery loves company kind of way, I was wondering if there are others like me out there and if you have any remedies that you can kindly recommend?

Sure the leaves will start showing their true colors, but I still get extremely down when the temperature starts to slide--that would be now. It seems I have so much extra energy in the summer and just become a hibernating bear in the winter. What are your remedies for S.A.D. :-(. Thanks all.

I also think the dust might still be settling from my recent, horrible job experience. Thankfully it ended in my favor but it still feels "icky!" Whenever my ex boss' face enters my mind I try and do something nice for myself to forget her!

I suffer from this too. I also suggest a light box. The one I bought was only $50 from Target and fits suggested wattage, for lack of a better word. I also try to stay in touch with a book club (meetup.com has many groups) and took on a craft just because of winter/fall blahs. I do latch hook b/c it's a no brainer, but keeps me busy. I get t.v. shows and movies from Netflix. Try to schedule "me" time or date nights to get out. Hope this helps.

You can get, 'lights' to help offset your SAD.

Just go to Amazon, (for example) and type in "seasonal affective disorder lights" and many will come up. Then, you can read the reviews of it.

My Mom was like that. We used to live in an area, that was dark and rainy all the time.
Then we moved, there is more sun here, and it really made a difference for her.

I know the feeling, but I dont get that way until after the holidays are over and it seems like FOREVER until the weather warms up. I try to keep myself busy, and I try to embrace the season for what it is. The way I look at it, if it was summer was all year long, I would not appreciate it. After a long winter, summer is such a treat!

In the fall there are plenty of things to do. Hayrides, apples, peaches, hiking, apple cider, pumpkins, etc. In the winter we try and bake more with the kids. Make homemade bread, and cookies. We take the kids sledding. (Which is more work than its worth, but at least it kills a few hours of the day) The kids go to bed on the early side since the days are getting shorter, and I get more me-time. I picked up my crocheting again, and I started getting movies and shows for ME on Netflix.

Its ok to focus a little on yourself and try to find things that you enjoy doing to get through until Spring. Hang in there!

I totally hear you from upstate NY. Gets worse and worse every year. Getting to the point that I have trouble enjoying our beautiful autumns here because of what comes next (we do not speak it's name, tehehe).

Light therapy, Vit D, getting OUT as much as you can stand.....otherwise, we'll get through it together, right? You and me and a bottle of wine!

:)

Get those lamps for SAD disorder, and have them all over the house. DHs office is in the basement and it's fairly dark though his window is fairly large. That helped him tremendously.

I do believe there are light bulbs too, that you can put in any lamp around the house. They're costly, but may help brighten up the house.

Also, what colors are your walls? If you have pastels or white walls, this is proven to be depressing in the winter. Consider a makeover and choose warm colors to help the mood in your house.

Opt for blinds instead of drapes to let in more light in the winter months too.

For SAD products see:

Tanning booth? 4 seasons atrium or greenhouse that you can visit in the area? Jacuzzi tub? Vitamin D supplements? These might help too.

When I was living in Belgium, one of the girls I worked with had S.A.D...she treated it by using a Sun lamp....

Since you know you have it - what does your doctor want you to do? What are his/her suggestions to help get you through the winter?

Can you be like Peter Pan and think happy thoughts?! Sorry - not trying to be rude - but I know when I get down about something - I try to think of happy thoughts!!!

GOOD LUCK!!!

One thing I always do at the first sign of fall when the nights begin to get chilly and your windows were still open, caught you off guard so you had to run around closing them and still don't have your winter clothes unpacked, is I wash my favorite most comfiest sheets and dig out the down comforter. I wash the comforter cover too and make myself a real nice warm cozy bed with all my blankets and linens that I have missed all summer. I burn a candle in the room too. Then I at least look forward to snuggling up at the end of my day, even if the days seem to end a little earlier each day.

I live in Pittsburgh, PA. Enough said. Other than Seattle, this has been called the worst city for SAD. I wouldn't say I suffer from SAD, but I sure hate those short, sunless days. If you truly have SAD, you can look into light box therapy to simulate sunrise...

I have not read the other posts....so I maybe repeating myself.

I live in the North West. We have rain for more then half the year here.

This year has been really bad...We didnt hit 70 until almost mid July...August was about the only month I can say we had summer.

S.A.D....Can be treated with a UV Light. Or some sort of indoor sun lamp.

You can also take SamE..Which is a vitamin supplement that helps aid in positive thinking.

Making sure you get enough Exercise and eat well can also have a huge effect on how you feel.

Make sure you are getting enough Vitamin D..B's and Iron.

You have to stay on top of it..Or it can consume you.

My sister has S.A.D. very bad...and when she moved to Alaska, it was super hard for her to adjust:)
