I'm not a fan of Locks of Love either. They get more hair than they can use, so they sell it. And the recipients still have to pay for their wigs, they're not free.

Hi Moms!
I've grown my hair out about 11 inches and am planning on getting it cut very soon. I'd like to donate to an organization that makes wigs for cancer patients. I understand that Locks of Love might not be my best choice to do that. Can anyone with some know-how give me some advice?
Thanks, Moms!!
Thanks to all the great responses, Moms!! I'm headed for my haircut next week, and I think I'm going to go with Wigs for Kids. The past two times I donated, it was to Locks of Love then Pantene. Since I didn't know about Wigs for Kids before, I'm going to give them a try.
I appreciate and thank all who took time from their busy day to write a response and help me out. I hope you moms have a wonderful week!!

My hair grows really quickly. I grow it out for a year, cut it off, grow it out, etc. I do not donate to Locks of Love, and I never encourage people to. These are two programs you can donate to, that are so much better.

Make sure your hair meets all the requirements to donate, and that it is actually long enough.
I donated mine to Pantene.
google "donating hair." You'll find lots of sites with information.
I second wigs for kids. I've heard unpleasant things about Locks of Love. High fives for donating your hair. Very cool. :)
I'm curious as to why people don't like Locks of Love? I've done it like four or five times to them because our salon supports them (free cut when you donate to them). Wigs for kids is not located near us. I didn't see a link to what salons do Pantene cuts.
just go to their web site -- there is a lot of information available there and I know some people on this board have done it before. It has to be at least 10" long, gathered in a braid or pony tail, not colored, not grey... Lots of guidelines on their site.
It really depends on your hair, whether it's natural or treated in any way. Some places will not take chemically treat hair. Locks of love will which is why I donate to them every 1 1/2 years. My hair grows VERY fast.
I have donated several time to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths. It's very easy to do!! Have fun!!
I also donated mine to Pantene's beautiful lengths. The instructions and guidelines on their website are very clear and easy to follow.
