I have a friend whose daughter got fingernail polish on the carpeting. Any ideas of how to get it out? She is talking about paying to have it cleaned. I thought if any of you knew how to get it out she wouldn't have to.

This sounds crazy, but it works. My daughter spilled nailpolish on light colored carpet. This worked after the spill sat for a few weeks (I found this on internet):

Soften with shaving cream, then apply some nail polish remover, hydrogen peroxide and windex.

It took a few cycles with a little bit of scrubbing. But it was out in minutes. Crazy huh?

Oxyclean! It totally worked for me...bright red fast drying nail polish on a cream colored carpet. Took it right out.

Good luck!

If she hasn't smeared it with polish remover, she can shave the top edge off with a BIC razor.

I just did this a couple of weeks ago. I can't blame my daughter it was all me. We have a light tan carpet and i spilled dark brown polish on it. I wiped up as much as i could by dabbing and then used nail polish remover by dabbing at the stain. It all came up without a problem and did not damage my carpet. It did take a while though to get it all up.

Carbona has a formula for that. Beware that the stuff is far from "environmentally friendly".

Hello-

Use an acetone free fingernail polish remover. First put the remover on the spot (maybe with a cotton ball) let it set for a minute. Then take a clean, damp, color free cloth and begin wiping up. Work from the outside of the stain to the middle (as not to make it bigger). Repeat until clean. Good Luck!

Krud Kutter (spray cleaner from Home Depot) worked for me, but I used it right away, before it had time to dry so I'm not sure how it would work on dry polish.

Also, if you're going to try the nail polish remover, I think you need to use "NON-ACETONE" so it won't melt the fibers of the carpet. That's the kind that's safe for acrylic nails. Either way, I think I'd test a small spot that people won't see just in case it melts the fibers.

Try Goo Gone. It also works well to get Dry erase marker off of walls and oily stains out of clothes even when they've been washed and dried several times.

My three year old son spilled hot pink nail polish on my carpets less than 24 hours after they had been cleaned. I called the carpet cleaners in a panic after he did this. You can take nail polish remover on a towel and keep dabbing at it to take out some of the color. Don't dump it on there. The carpet cleaners told me that was probably the best as cleaning it again wouldn't take it out, especially since it was a bright color. If it is colored it will leave a stain. After 30 minutes and a half a bottle of nail polish remover the spot still remained. I did find Oxyclean stainer remover has helped fade it over time but it has not completely come out.

My daughter broke a bottle of red nail polish on our carpet and my husband saturated it with a huge bottle of nail polish remover (he basically just poured it on). I think it must have had acetone in it, but it didn't discolor or ruin the carpet in any way. It all came out without a trace (and there was a lot!). You may want to steam clean the spot after using the nail polish remover, but the nail polish itself was gone.

When we first moved into our house, my sister came to visit and her and my daughter tipped over Red nail polish into the light grey carpet. We used nail polish remover and lots of papertowels. It didn't harm the carpet and we kept rubbing and blotting untill it was gone. It worked! (my husband never noticed!) It might look a little worse before it gets better because it has to thin it.
PS- Hair spray got permanent marker out of new furniture too!!! Good Luck!
