I Know It's a Little Early But...

I know that this is not a choice that will have to be made for about a year, but I'm trying to decide the best place to send my son to kindergarten. We live in the Ackerman attendance site, but I'm worried about the size of the school, I've also heard some not so good things from parents I respect...

This being said I am wondering if anyone has any input about any of the Millard or Ralston schools (we live in Millard, but work in the Ralston area). I'm thinking about Bryan, Norris, Sandoz or Disney (Millard). I don't think it makes much sense to opt out of Millard, but since we work in Ralston I'm also thinking about either Blumfield or Meadows. Just wondering if anyone has any input on these schools or other schools in the general area of 160th and Q and 84 and Q.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses! I have checked into the opting into other schools in our district and opting into a different district - it all sounds doable so long as get the paperwork done in a timely manner. Of course that could all change with the Learning Community...Anyhow, I'll be scheduling visits at all the schools. If anyone has any input regarding Ackerman specifically that would be wonderful!!

K.,

I am going to throw out another perspective here. When my children started school, we lived in District 66. My children were in 5th, 3rd, and 1st grade when we moved to a house in OPS. We kept them in District 66 as that was where their friends were, familiar with the school, etc. What I wish I had done was moved them to a neighborhood school right away. What became apparent to me later on was that there were never any kids in our neighborhood to play with that they knew. When all the other kids around were outside, my children were out playing by themselves as I didn't know that parents of these other kids, didn't know the kids, etc.

I feel it is important to have your children in a school close to home so that they can get the entire social aspect outside of the classroom. I have heard good things about Ackerman and personally, I really like MPS. We opted into MPS after a horific experience with OPS. We couldn't be happier. Check out the school yourself. Go talk to the Kindergarten teachers, talk to the school principal. It is fine to take the opinions of other parents and learn from their experiences but I would also go and check it out for myself.

Each and every school district in every town has it's own set of issues. Goods and bads. Your school experience, positive or negative, usually depends on what effort YOU put into it. There are good and bad teachers/administrators in EVERY school district.

Good luck in your search!

The best advice I can give you is to schedule a visit with the schools you mentioned above to try to get a feel for what your child's school day might be like. I used to teach in Millard before I became a SAHM. It really is a great school district with lots of options for students. All of the schools offer their own unique features. I know that Sandoz and Disney are smaller schools if you like a smaller, more intimate environment. I don't know much about Norris or Bryan and I have never heard anything negative about Ackerman.

I don't know very much about the Ralston schools. I am sorry I couldn't be more help!

My younger son attended Sandoz for (special ed) preschool. It is not our "home" school, but he loved it and so did we!! Once he went to kindergarten (this school year), he went to our neighborhood school like his big brother. I have only heard good things about Millard and we've been in the district for the past 6 years with no major complaints.

When we were still in Omaha, we had our daughter go to preschool at Wildewood Elementary in Ralston and absolutely loved that school. If we were still in the Omaha area, we'd have her in Kindergarten there (we're out of state now). The Ralston school district is one of the best in the area. Millard is too, so you can't go wrong with either of them. One thing to remember, you will hear pros & cons about every school you look into, so pick the one you feel the most comfortable with. Wildewood Elementary is located at 8071 Ralston Ave Ralston, NE 68127 and their phone # ###-###-####.

Have you even checked into being able to opt into other school within the Millard school district?? If they do allow you to opt into another school within your district, often times schools will be too full and only open to neighborhood kids. And you could try to opt into Ralston however, they don't have to accept you if their numbers are too high. So before you even start to make some of these decision, I would look into what is even possible, then go from there!! Good luck!! :)
