In Need of New OB GYN

Hello again ladies,

First off, let me say that I really appreciate all of the amazing advice you all have given since I've been a member of mamasource. With that being said, I need more help. Here's the deal: After about three days with no period, I took a home pregnanacy test and it came back positive! Since my periods are never late/missing, I'm about 99% sure I'm now pregnant with my second child (my first is 13 months old...yes, I know I'm nuts!) Since early prenatal care is very important, I need to find a good OB GYN fast, however, being fairly new to the area, I don't even know where to begin. I moved here from Ohio about a year ago and I am not familiar with the hospitals or doctors here in the Dallas area. I lucked up and found my son's pediatrican on the first try, but I don't want to rely on luck this time when selecting an OB GYN and delivery hospital. My question is this: What hospitals and OB GYN doctors do any of you recommend? I live in Wylie and want a hospital and doctor that is fairly close to either Wylie or Plano, but I'm willing to drive further for a good recommendation. My OB GYN in Ohio was great! I had a somewhat rough vaginal delivery because my son got tangled up in the cord which almost led to me having to have a C - Section. Luckily, my doctor was able to somehow get him out using the vacuum extraction and everything turned out fine. I am hoping for a second vaginal delivery and want a doctor who will do everything possible to make that happen. If any of you reading this had a great labor experience and want to recommend your doctor, please let me know. And if your doctor was also good with keeping on time appointments, had a great bedside manner and was very thorough with regard to making sure mom and baby were safe, please highlight that as well.

Also, have any of you had something called a "walking epidural" if so, please give me your experiences. I had an epidural the first time around, but because of the type and amount of epidural administered, I couldn't feel ANYTHING from the chest down (not even myself pushing) and I had to lay flat on my back and deliver, which was very uncomfortable! I'm not complaining, because the epidural did what it was supposed do, which was stop the pain, but I am looking for an option where I am a bit more in control of my delivery. I have heard that a walking epidural is a bit different in that it allowes you more mobility during the few hours or so before you have to start pushing. It also supposedly enables you to feel some of the discomfort so you can feel yourself pushing and know that you're making progress towards getting the baby out. Maybe I'm asking too much, but if any of you have experiences with the walking epidural that you'd like to share, I'd be really grateful! Thanks in advance for your help!

What can I do next?

Hi G.,

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I love my Dr at Presby of Plano (Parker & Tollway). His name is Dr. John Paul Roberts. I have been his patient for about a year and he will be delivering my daughter when she makes her arrival in February. Although this is my third child it will be the first one delivered by Dr. Roberts since my last OBGYN moved. He came very highly recommended by my best friend who had two of her children delivered by him and wouldn't go to anyone else. Not only is Dr. Roberts wonderful (professional, attentive, detailed), but his staff is wonderful! I love both of his nurses and feel like a long time friend when I am in the office not just another patient. His nurses are Jacqueline and Jo Ray.

If you go to Dr. Roberts please tell him that T. Frohardt-Johnson referred you.

Good Luck and Happy New Year!

Hi G.,

I also live in Wylie and my OB/GYN is Dr.Ivan Rovner as mentioned by another mom! He is a great doctor and has an awesome staff. I have been a patient of his for about 17 years now. I had 2 of my children at Medical Center of Plano and both times my stay was very pleasant! Hope this helps!

My OB/GYN is Dr. Ivan Rovner and he is with Medical Center of Plano at Coit and 15th. He is a wonderful dr. and has a great bedside manner. I've been his patient going on 12 years now and I couldn't ask for a better dr. I also want to add that Medical Center of Plano is an excellent hospital and their Maternity/Post Partum floor is one of the best around.

G.-
I also moved here from another state 3 years ago(New Orleans, La.) due to Katrina and I also live in Wylie. I work for a Oncology office and one of my doctors referred me to Dr. Amie Napier she is located in Medical City of Dallas which is a little far but she is so worth it. she delivered my son 2 yrs ago and I'm pregnant again with baby # 2 that is due in June. I have had some problems in between the two pregnancies and she would tell me not to worry and everything would be okay and she was right! She also has 5 other doctors in her practice. Medical City Hospital was also wonderful when I delivered my son. Here is her phone # & address: ###-###-#### > 7777 Forest Lane. Ste. A-331 Dallas, Tx. 75230
Keep me posted if you decide to see her.

I don't know about doctors that would be close to you, but I can say that I tell everyone I know to avoid the McKinney hospital at all costs! I delivered there the first time and then the second time, I drove all the way to Baylor Frisco. Baylor Frisco is probably too far away for you, but I think it is fantastic. It was like being in a five star hotel! I didn't want to leave!
I like the North Central Women's Health group. They are located in McKinney, but again, that is probably too far for you.
As far as the epidural goes, all I can say is that I had an epidural with my first, went natural with my second, and now I've decided that I will never have an epi again. going natural was not as bad as it sounds and I much prefer that to having needles in my back!
Good luck with your search and your pregnancy. (Oh and you aren't crazy. I found out I was pregnant for the second time when my first was 8 months old!)
