Hey mamas, other than staking out my mailbox with a camera and a baseball bat (kidding!) is there anything i can do if i suspect kids on their way to/from the bus stop are messing with peoples' mailboxes? my husband saw some kids looking in mailboxes once probably a year ago, gave them the eyeball and they kept moving, but i just found out a cd i ordered was "delivered" last week, and i never saw it. thank goodness it was only a $3 amazon special! any thoughts?? i'm TICKED OFF! and we both work ft so the stakeout is not an option.

obviously i will be having anything i order sent to my mom's now.

GRRRRRRRRRR!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

yes, SH, i probably rushed to judgment...i see those kids every single morning when i leave with my son, so they are the first people i thought of. who else walks by our mailboxes so often? some people do i'm sure...but i have absolutely no proof either way. they are young teenage boys and they were my first thought, right or wrong. i'm still mad just thinking about it!! grr!!

awesome! i actually found fake surveillance cameras on amazon.com. off to price "real" ones.

it might just be easier to have things sent to my mom's house but at least now i know i have options...! thanks everybody!

If you see them, remind them that it is a felony -a jailable offense -to tamper with the mail or mailboxes. You may want to laminate a sign saying that and put it on the door to your mailbox if you really think this is a continuing problem. State that the police WILL be called.

It is a federal crime, to mess with mail boxes.

I would report it to the police.

Or maybe, your CD was put into another mailbox by mistake?
Report it to the post office and to the store you bought it from, say you never got it even if it was reported as "delivered." The post office will investigate. Just tell them you never got it.

Then again, your Husband... a year ago, saw kids messing with mail boxes. That is a long time ago.

If you think your mail is missing, call the USPS hotline (800-ASK-USPS) and report it. They take mail theft very seriously since it's a federal crime.

Well, I am an online seller. Lots of 'delivered' items get lost in the mail. Contact amazon, they will likely replace it for free. As for the kids, I can only think of a security cam!

why not call the police and inquire? Maybe they can post someone near to check it out. And call Amazon, and tell them you never received your package. I'd think they would send another one out.

Maybe rig it with a really loud alarm?

Before you drop the $ on a video surveillance system check with your local police department. Some friends of mine had a really bad mail theft problem in their neighborhood and they managed to get good clear pictures of who was doing it. After all their efforts the SJPD wouldn't even look at them! It turns out that due to budget cuts and being short staffed theft cases have low priority right now.

Hardware store - security camera. (also available all over on the interwebs)

Lots of choices, either hooked up to computer or just with internal memory. Cost ranges from $40ish up.
