Marriage Proposals

This isn't about kids...but it does lead up to kids. I have three intertwined questions...Is it more romantic to propose:

1. On rocks at a river only the two of you?
2. At an outstanding restaurant?

Lastly, how did your husband propose to you?

Thanks ladies! A friend of mine is trying to get some ideas and it was wonderful to read all your stories. They are all so unique! Aren't husbands so adorable? All the stories are beautiful memories - give those hubbies a tight squeeze this year.

i pick the rocks on the river.

My hubby proposed at Christmas in front of the new " in laws " I never met and the ring was tied to a teddy bear . Was a little embarrassed and put on the spot. But a year later we were married.

I would say the river

I used to go to the dog races (sorry any PETA members) and he had it scheduled so on the scoreboard it came up and said S. will you marry me. He regrets it and wishes he did something more special but I still love it and its a unique story. Gives "Here goes Rusty" a whole new meaning (that was the bunny the dogs chase)

We're river lovers, so I'd say the river option for sure.

My husband proposed last Christmas actually ;) He wrote me a Christmas card that said something about 'we're going to be saying the 'f' word a whole lot more this year'... I was thinking 'well that isn't very nice'... at the bottom of the card it said 'now go check the microwave for a fresh cup of coffee'... I was thinking 'coffee, heck yeah!!'... popped it open, and there was the ring. I jumped back, knocked a bunch of stuff off a shelf, and when I turned around he was on one knee :)

The 'f' word was 'fiancé' ;)

I love that story because it's MY story, but proposing first thing in the morning?!... I love coffee ;)

I think the river definitely :)

My proposal wasn't super romantic but it is sooo my husband lol. A few days before he proposed I had a dream that he asked me in the middle of the night. Anyway, a few days later, we were walking in this outdoor shopping center that we love to go to and he pops me on the butt with a shopping bag. I jokingly said "stop it that belongs to me" then he said "well what if I take out a lease to own option on it" I turned to look at him like he was crazy and he was down on one knee. Haha. Also, on our wedding night I found out that my "dream" wasnt a dream it was him practicing lol.

River.

I was crying because he bought the ring and didn't give it to me because he wanted to plan the perfect proposal. I said what would make it perfect is him asking and me excepting. So about five thirty in the morning here he is asking me to marry him so we could go to work. :)

I still firmly believe it is not the event but the outcome.

Just an FYI my ring has my mom's ring as part of it so I of course knew about it. Probably would have been different if I didn't know.

On rocks at a river.

My husband proposed near a waterfall when we stopped for lunch on a hike one Saturday morning. He even had a small bottle of champagne in his backpack.

I don't like the idea of a restaurant because it's too public.

My vote would be for by the river. My husband took me to the top of a mountain/hill at my favorite park. It overlooks a valley, river, etc. Only he didn't count on the foot and a half of snow on the ground lol. He proposed on my birthday (which is in February). Anyway, he had a backpack with him. When we got to the top, he told me to close my eyes. He had a bottle of champagne (the good stuff ) and he had made chocolate covered strawberries himself. Poor guy used the wrong kind of chocolate so it never hardened. They were still yummy! Then he moved me over to the railing (the spot with the view). I heard him take a deep breath and then he said, "open your eyes" and he was on one knee, in the snow, with the ring box open. The rest is history! 11+ years and two children later, I still remember every detail. We had dinner that night at "our restaurant" but I'm glad he proposed at the park - a spot we can always go to.

I would rather be outside in the moonlight, me and him by the river. But that's a personal preferance. I would remember that more than any old restaraunt. The rock and river will always be there, but the restaraunt will eventually go out of business. SO, you can go visit the rocks on your 50th anniversary, but not the restaraunt.

My husband proposed by saying - "We need to get married" No ring or anything! He was walking through the house and just proclaimed it! lol He had just gotten saved at church and was hit with a revelation - hey - this isn't right! We're supposed to be married, we have 2 kids and live together, we really need to be married. :) It was sort of sweet.

Does it really matter?

In the car....as an off-hand question... I quickly changed the subject! (I didn't know if he was serious... he had been joking about it for a long time.)

We were going Christmas shopping, and he asked if I had made a Christmas list yet.... I said I hadn't, and didn't really know what I wanted...... He said, "How about a ring?" I giggled and changed the subject!

We went on shopping, and my sister and cousin couldn't figure out why I was so giddy.....

Later that day, he asked again..... my reply was "I didn't realize you were serious..." His reply... "I was... at least it merits discussion." I giggled again!

Long story short... that was back in 1980..... and we are still married!

Personally? For me? I think the rocks would be more romantic. However if the W. being proposed to is not an outdoorsy kinda person? she probably wouldn't like it.

My husband proposed to me on July 13, 1996 at 40K feet. We were on a flight back to Germany after a vacation to the States for a friends wedding and meeting family....I was sleeping - the sun was coming up...he nudged me awake...I was a TAD grumpy!!! He asked me about our trip...I admit - I was grumpy!! I was sleeping!!! :) I said it was fine....very nice....did i think my parents liked him? yes. they thought you were wonderful (you put up with me - don't you? LOL!) he then asked what do you think of me? huh? I'm sorry? what do you think of me? I said I think you are wonderful...he said Wonderful enough to marry? pulled out my engagement ring and asked me to marry him. I was surprised...it's really hard to surprise me!! I said YES! The stewardess/flight attendant brought over a bottle of champagne and toasted us...guess while I was sleeping he had it all planned out with them....

We married Oct 11th the following year.

Either one, depends on the couple. I've never been to an outstanding restaurant, but if it's like in the movies all black tie and fancy with violinists and everything, that would be awesome, but not as sweet as a river proposal. So I guess the river takes my vote.

My husband proposed to me at our favorite local park at nightime. We were the only ones there. We were standing at the top of the slide. He got down on one knee and recited a poem he made up, it was so sweet. and gave me my ring, (I had already seen it, we picked it out together a few weeks before.) Then he used his remote control to his car cd player and played a song and we danced. Then we see these thugs walking toward us, probably to scare us away so they can do drugs there, ha! So we ran off, got in the car and sped off. Sadly, in our haste, we lost the cd player remote :) It was a fun, easy, cheap adventure.

Oh, we had only been dating about 3 months, we got married 10 months after we met, and have been married 8 years.

(He never 'technically asked before, but we did talk about it, it was actually his mom who brought it up the first time. We were going to a church class together one night and we were so bored. He looked at me and said, let's go ring shopping... and we did. I guess that could be the actual proposal, who knows?)

Option 1 is more romantic.

My husband proposed my planning a last minute surprise trip to Paris. I didn't get to find out where we were going until we got to the boarding gate. Also, knowing that I was a snoop, he had hidden the ring in his shoe (I did snoop through bags and was extra huggy trying to check pockets). After not finding any hint of a ring, I relaxed and just thought of it as an impromptu trip to Paris. We toured the city all day and finally sat down to dinner at night. After dinner we went back to the hotel. He had booked a hotel a block away from the eiffel tower with a balcony over looking it. He proposed after dinner that night on the balcony.

for me it would be by the river, just the two of us. But if the person doesn't like the outdoors then it would be the restaurant.

For us, we were laying in bed talking and he said I think we should get married. I told him me too, kissed him then just jumped up and got the calendar lol.

I dont think either way is...when my husband proposed the first time,no we never broke up or anything. He mailed me a very heartfelt letter. As i read it he pulled out my ring and asked if I would marry him. Life happened we had our son and 5 years later on Christmas he gave me a card that said to my wife, and on the inside was a marriage licsene just needed to be signed:)

I am not a romantic, I love it in movies but it just does not seem practical in real life and it just does not play out well, so neither of those appeal to me. I rather it be done in the home privately to say the least. Ours was more of a discussion of it is time, let's go pick out a ring, ok sounds good.

Since I was proposed to twice where I had to say no, I'm glad it wasn't done in public. When my husband proposed, I thought he was going to do the big restaurant deal, but we left the restaurant with no proposal, only to go to a hotel where he had the room decorated and he proposed there. The best proposal stories I hear are the ones where the guy really goes out of his way for his girlfriend, and not in a huge public way. My best friend's husband proposed to her by making and decorating cupcakes to say will you marry me? He doesn't bake, but she loves to bake, so the fact that he was willing to embrace something she loves so much to show her how much he loves her was great. Especially, since he went to the store looking for cupcake mix, not realizing that you use regular cake mix.

I vote for the river. My husband proposed to me on Christmas Eve. He convinced me that we should exchange our stockings on Christmas Eve instead of Christmas Day. I had him go through his first, and then he handed me mine. I was a little disappointed at first to find that it just had a couple cheap supermarket things - something like emery boards, chap stick, a roll of film and a magazine. He had been telling me for a few weeks that he was going to give me a lump of coal in my stocking and when he started to give me my stocking he had me feel the toe and said "See, I told you I'd give you coal". His parents used to have a coal stove and still had the bin with some random pieces in it in their garage, so I thought he was just being cute. He proceeded to hand me the items from my stocking, which I thought was a little odd, but whatever, and then the only thing left was the coal. He made like he was going to set the stocking down and then said "Well, do you want to see the coal? I put a bow around it." I said sure, so sure enough he pulls out a piece of coal with a small pink ribbon around it. I thought isn't that cute, and figured we were done. Next thing I know, he gets off the couch, pulls a handkerchief from his sleeve, lays it on the floor and kneels on it. He then proceeds to take the ribbon off the coal and opens it up. He had cut it in half and carved out a well on each half, then lacquered the whole thing, so it wouldn't be dusty, and added a hinge to one side, to make a ring box. Inside was my ring! It was very cool and I loved the use of coal to hold the diamond, since that's where diamonds come from. I will always cherish that coal box (as well as the ring! And my hubby, of course!) :) It's been 15 years now.

On rocks at a river!
We were both in the same Army unit and school, it was late at night we were sitting all alone on the bleachers down at the baseball field not far from the barracks. I was sitting in his lap it was FREEZING. We were just talking and all of a sudden he blurted out " will you marry me" .I was stunned. He was stunned, he hadn't planned on asking me that night it just came out. I asked , thinking I hadn't heard right " what did you say?" He replied " will . . you . . marry . . me?" I made him wait 3 days before I said yes. I also made him call my dad and ask permission .

That was march , 3 months after we met. We were married that December and it's been 11 years this year.

River if he wants her to remember what he said to her.

My husband proposed a couple weeks before our big wedding day! We talked about getting married and just picked a date and started planning it. The cost of everything and all the deposits were killing us so I figured that I was never going to get the ring or even the proposal (I know sounds funny) until one day he insisted that I take time off from planning and go have dinner with a friend. I didn't think anything of it. My friend and I had a great dinner and I was shocked when the waiter that brought the check was my husband with a beautiful big diamond asking if I'd like some ice. I was so shocked and surprised that I don't remember half of what he said. My girlfriend of course knew all along and jumped up and at least got some pictures of it. I do wish I could remeber everything he said though. Good luck to your friend and thanks for making me think of that special day all over again ..... 6 years later.

On rocks at a river just the 2 of you...hands down!
My hubby proposed to me 20 years ago Christmas night. We were at my fathers home in Montana, it was snowing and very cold out; Michael asked me if I wanted to take a walk after dinner (should've known right then and there, he never wanted to take walks, especially on a snowy night!); we walked about a hundred yards from the house, stood in the light of the guest house doorway, and he proposed. It was a wonderful moment and the beginning of a lifetime shared for many years now.

River!

My husband proposed on Easter, he did an easter egg hunt through my parents house (I was picking up my grandmother when he got there early to set it up), each egg had a clue in it to lead to the next one and the last one led me to him and had my engagement ring in an egg and got down on one knee and proposed.
