My youngest has High functioning autism(HFA)...A Sensory Processing Disorder(SPD) and Opposition Defiance disorder(ODD)....For some back ground on him.

I have found him multiple times now where he has wrapped something around his neck to the point he can not breathe. A few times he was able to yell for help still. But once he had broke off a strap from something and wrapped it around a few times and tightly.

He is getting stuff you would not think possible to wrap, around his neck.

I put a call into the Doc. The nurse has called me back. she is going to Rally with the doc and see what they can think of.

His OT is only in the office on Tuesday's and they dont get messages out to her.

Anybody ever have a kid do this??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

After speaking with doc and nurse yesterday we are to be watching him like a hawk...so no showers for mama unless he is sleeping or being watched.

I am to remove everything I think he could get around his neck...duh...That I thought had always been how things work..but when he is using his shirt...he now can not stay dressed while at home.

If he continues...I have to take him up to children hospital....They want to run tests and see if they can find a reason why he is doing it.

The scary thing is he is using just about anything long enough that he can manipulate around his neck.

I am hoping it is just a new sensation for him...and he grows out of it fast.

But the fact that now even shoes have to be put up...because of the laces he can get off of them...my life just got that much harder!...oh well though...Some things I will take.

Andy did it. Only a couple times. I wish I could remember what I said to him. Ya know how it is, every now and then you luck into immediate understanding, this was one of those times.

I am not promising anything but I will ask him about it tomorrow night when he gets home. He usually doesn't remember things like that but who knows, we may get lucky. If anything I will ask him what he thinks and maybe get some terms that your son will understand.

I keep thinking I yelled, I never yell. If I yell my kids get scared because mom doesn't yell.

I will see what I can find out. :)

A sibling of mine has Oppositional Defiance Disorder and Reactive Attachment Disorder. He had to be institutionalized at one point as a child because of extreme and aggressive activity.

I don't know his age, but the choking activity is terrifyingly common in slightly older kids and teens as kind of a way to get 'high'.

I would certainly keep him under very close supervision and remove anything with straps, strings until you can get him seen by his therapist and his meds worked out...

*Also, what do you mean you haven't been here in almost 3 weeks... you posted about 4 questions in the past few days.

How old is your son?
Until you see your doctor, would it be appropriate to get a baby gate (depending on his age) and safety-proof a designated area with age appropriate toys that can't be manipulated to any sort of hazard?

No, Libby, but my girlfriend's son did this.

It was scary. he would take the shoe laces off his shoes and wrap it around his neck...

I don't know what his coding is. He had anger issues as well..they ended up putting him on some medications that helped. I think they diagnosed him as bi-polar as well...

Once they got the medications leveled out, he didn't do it anymore. In the time it took to get the medication "right", they bought him shoes with velcro and were within sight of him at all times..
