Off Topic- Lost over Lost Finale??

Okay, moms. I know this is off topic but can someone help me out here. We watched the Lost series finale last night and I'm not sure if it was because we were tired from chasing 2 pre-schoolers around all day, but we didn't get it at all.

it didn't seem like any questions were really answered. And I also don't fuindamentally understand the island.

- Was it a form of purgatory (which the creators said several years ago ti was not) where the characters were dead but had to work through their shortcomings to "move on?"

- Were they actually alive and living on the island and then all died at their own times?

- Some other explanation entirely.

I guess I can't get it worked out in my brain because none of these explanations seem plausible when you factor in everything from the past 6 seasons.

Anyone else feeling totally LOST??? Anyone else disappointed?
Anyone who can clear this up for me?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I gave up on LOST oh so long ago. I don't like that constant feeling of confusion that comes with the show. I'm back to book reading and old movie watching. ;-)

I'm a huge Lost fan, although I came in late in the game (late 4th season), but I caught up and here is how I took the finale...The island was real. Everything that happened on the island was real. The Losties were all tied together by destiny because of Jacob. They all eventually died. Jack on the island because he got stabbed by smokey/fake locke, Jin and Sun on the sub, Kate and Sawyer some way we don't know after they got off the island, evidenced most by Kate telling Jack how much she had missed him revealing she may have lived a long time without him after she left the island, etc. Hurley and Ben stayed on the island as it's protectors for some unknown amount of time until they too died, etc., etc.

The sideways universe, or the alt, was a type of limbo where they all had to remember their pasts so that they could all come together to move on to "heaven" or whatever comes after death. Time was irrelevant in the alt since it wasn't "real". They (the losties) "created" the alt as a type of nirvana where all their "issues" were handled, like Jack having a son so he could resolve his own father issues, Hurley being lucky instead of "cursed", Ben being close to Alex so he could help her, etc. And all their revelations that got them to realize they had already passed had something to do with love. Although Locke was a little off that theory unless the love was for himself finally realizing he was worthy of walking again rather than him continually punishing himself for his misdeeds. They all were tied together in death as they were in life which is why they all had to "move on" together. They needed each other to let go and move on.

The island itself was home to the portal to "hell", hence the cork which had to be protected. It possessed unique electromagnetic properties which is why people were healed, time travel was possible, etc. Jacob and his brother/smokey made life on the island hard because they were in a constant battle and many people suffered and died because of their "game".

There were many unanswered questions, mostly to do with what happened on the island in my opinion, like why did the Dharma initiative have to do the innoculations every 9 days, who finished building the frozen donkey wheel, what happened to the "volcano", things like that, but those are the questions that will never be answered OR the creators will be including those answers in future marketable products to make more money, the greedy bast$@&!!! LOL

I liked the finale very much. But beyond not getting answers to all the questions, I was most disappointed in the realization that these characters all went through such misery and pain on the island, presumably only because they were "selected" by Jacob, who I am not fond of now, and their resolutions were far from ideal. I mean, I know it's supposed to be "destiny", but it was just so sad. Especially Jack dying alone in the jungle. It was beautiful and poetic, with the eye closing and all, just very sad.

Feel free to pm me if you have more questions or just want to chat about it. I think I'm in the grieving process right now. I'm so sad Lost is over. :-(

Namaste,
N.

p.s. In regards to the "untouched" plane wreckage at the end, I read a theory that it is probably the wreckage from the NEXT plane crash that will happen on the island, and given that Jacob and "the others" are no longer in charge, hopefully those survivors would have had a better time of it with Hurley and Ben at the helm. And regarding the island at the bottom of the ocean at the beginning of the alt time line, I have 2 theories about that...1) it's "made up" just like everything else in the alt to help the Losties come to grip with their fates and move on, or 2) it really was sunk, maybe even by Hurley and Ben before they died. I'm sure there will be theories about Lost for many many moons to come. See ya in another life, brotha. :-)

p.s.s. - I've since read a release by someone from the ABC network that the wreckage at the end during the credits did not have anything to do with the finale. It was more done as an homage to the show as a whole.

I simply LOVED it! This is my take on it, and I think it's especially poignant because my mom, who died in September and LOVED this show, always believed and taught me to believe that souls travel in groups. It doesn't mean they all are born and die at the same time, but those who "die" before wait for the others so they can then all go into the light or be reincarnated together again. I so wanted her to be with me to watch it last night, and with that ending I just about lost it!

I think everything on the island and the island disappearing, the time travel, etc. happened. I think "sideways" world was the limbo where they were all waiting for everyone to catch up and reconcile issues they needed to deal with in this life. I love the way they've played with and used time travel and the theory of people living different lives all at once strung throughout time -thus giving us deja vu.

I think those who managed to get off the island and stay off did just that, and those who came back -came back. I think the happenings over this last season were a lot of their different souls issues being resolved, but ultimately learning that, in the end, we have to let go to be happy and ultimately be together. The full-circle ending with Jack lying down in the bamboo forest and closing his eyes with a silent and empty wreckage site on the beach -whereas it started with the chaotic wreckage scene and him opening his eyes in the bamboo forest was just perfect to me. Not only Jack, but all the others worked through the issues they needed to work through and waited and finally found one another and reconvened at the church to go into the light. Remember, Jack's dad told him -some died before you and some long after, because there is no NOW -what we saw was Jack finally working through all of his issues and coming to peace. The more I think of it, the more wonderful it is!

Here's how I see it. Everything on the island actually happened. The alt-verse we've been seeing all season happened in the second before Jack died, in his head (kinda like your life flashing before you when you die), to help him reconcile with the fact that he died "for something", everyone gets a happy ending so Jack can die in peace. The island DOES need a "keeper", and Hurley ended up being that with Ben his "number two". Desmond is still on the island, but we're led to believe Hurley will make new rules which will let Desmond off the island. The beauty of it is there are many unanswered questions still, which will let us all discuss it for a long time to come. Overall, I felt it was pretty satisfactory and I LOVED the scenes where people "found" each other again. And ANYTHING with Ian Somerhalder (Boone) is fine by me.

I'm right there with you - and quite mad at myself for staying up so late to watch it!

There are so many more questions for me than answers.
Why did Micheal, Walt and Mr. Echo not make appearances in the finale? Why could people not have babies there? Why would Richard bring Juliet to the island to help people have babies. What was Darma? What do the Polar Bears have to do anything and why did they only make an appearance in a few episodes?

Series finales ALWAYS disappoint me. This one was so hyped-up, and I think it left us all as befuddled as did all the seasons we watched it.

The one thing we do know about 24's finale tonight is that Jack doesn't die - he has to be in the movie they're currently making.

Ok, so here it is:
It wasn't purgatory. Purgatory implies that there was some kind of punishment. They were just waiting for each other. In the "flash sideways", time didn't mean anything.
Everything that happened on the island was true. All of it. The end, where Jack dies, happened. Hurley and Ben? Happened. We don't know how long H and B were in charge, but the ending implied a long time.
Also, Sawyer, kate, claire, miles and lapidus all made it off the island. And Richard. Poor guy. Of course, we don't know what they did after that. When they meet up in the "flash sideways", again, time didn't mean anything.

The island was real. What happened there really happened. Christian explained it all. The flash sideways was a place they had all created to find each other again. They were all important to each other and tied together in so many ways. They needed to be together to cross over to the afterlife. Christian said that some had died before Jack and some had died after, so there was really no "time" in the flash sideways.

Part of the beauty of LOST is that it makes us think. It's one of the only shows on TV that actually lets its viewers for their own assumptions. A lot of the questions were answered, but for some of them you had to really pay attention to "get" it. I've had to watch the final episodes a few times to pick up on all the little nuances. I love LOST and I'm sure at some point I'll watch all 6 seasons again, just to see all the fun stuff I had forgotten about.

I still do not understand the whole point of the island and why it had to be protected and why they were chosen to end up there in the first place, and they never really explained about who these "Others" where. The list of un answered questions go on and on. Very disappointed!

my understanding was jack was the only one dead. he died on the island everyone else had either died before or after him and he had to work out his shortcomings. in season 3 I think it was john locks dad made a comment about them being in hell. so I think it was a purgatory thing. they did leave alot of unanswered questions like what were charles and ben fighting over the island for. And how did jacob decide who he wanted. and with everyone who was at the hopital flashing back to the island in the sideways flashes I got the impression only the people at the hospital were dead.

but ben would never have gone to heaven. he was to wicked. and why did russo and alex not be in the final. michael and walt werent in the final. niether was echo. anyway I did not like the way it ended. they never explained in reality what the black smoke was. they never explained the black horse how the island got moved or lots of other things. so I wasnt happy with the finale either. so anyone who watched lost is still lost.

My interpretation was that they were all alive on the island, but that when they had all died, they met up together to pass on.

I wasn't disappointed at all. I thought it was a beautiful ending and loved how it ended with Jack's eyes closing. I'm hoping 24 ends just as nicely tonight, although I don't expect Jack Bauer to see any bright lights.

The very last scene tells it all... it shows the plane in pieces. Nobody could've survived the crash, and nobody did. They all died on the plane crash, and the mysterious storylines were just them dealing with a sudden, traumatic death that they weren't ready for. 6 years later (in series run time), they've finally all accepted their fates, and they are now ready to "move on" (while this could be to heaven, it doesn't necessarily have to be... they leave it open as to what they are moving on to). So, pretty much what everyone expected from the get-go was right... they were all dead.
