I won't get into the details why, but I have 1 week to come up with & complete a parade float. What we have right now is a 30 foot trailer and 2 1968 cars that will be on it. The float is for an automotive repair shop. I've been all over the internet trying to find cute ideas for an automotive float, but coming up emtpy. Any of you creative people have ideas?! I'm going to research 1968 to see if we can theme it around that maybe. The only thing we've come up with is adding a cool toolbox and making some large tools (wrench, screwdriver, etc.). Feel like I'm missing some "pozzazz (SP?!). Love to hear your ideas!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your ideas! We ended up doing the 1968 theme and I made posters (with glitter!) of all kinds of cool stuff that happened in 1968. We surrounded the trailer with fringed tablecloth to make it like a float and then added some advertisement posters and posters about the 2 cars and then all of the "info" stuff. It was a lot of work, but turned out pretty cute! Thanks for all of your idea. PS. loved the adding a finish line idea - saving that for another year!!! :)

Is there a theme for the parade? Most parades have some sort of saying or theme or cause they donating to, so maybe that would help you with some additional accessories. Other than that, I like your idea of giant tools to put up, that's cute. You could also make a banner (or have it made) with the name of the company and put it on both sides. You can have people throwing out candy, like suckers stuck through your business cards too, kids always love the candy! You could put a stereo on it and have some 60s music playing from it too, to go along with the theme of the cars.

I have no idea if this will help - but it sure contains a lot of info about 1968. LOL

If you already have the cars on the float I would think that would be the "center" piece of the decoration. Add lots and lots of muscle car stuff - engine blocks, scoops, etc...type in muscle car or gearhead into google and hit images to get some ideas.

Have everyone dressed like a mechanic. This would be a simple as denim shirts with name badges sewn on, jumpsuits, etc.

If you can have a sound system on your float research 1960s car music, make a cd/tape, and play it in a loop during the parade.

Okay, this is really inappropriate - but - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_car_crash_songs

Have fun !!!!

I was thinking large tools even before I read your idea,,lol,, Use racing flags here and there, like at each corner, with checker flags and such. Those strings of triangle flagging, maybe even do tall poles at the front to look like the finish line of a race,, to accentuate the speed of cars. Have someone (girl in cute 60s clothing) walk out front of the float with flags to "start the race" now and then,, like in "Grease" when they race the 1/4 mile for pink slips..60s music is a must, maybe even a juke box if you can find one or make something that looks like one, and the guys in mechanic jumpsuits. dont forget the red rag hanging out the back pocket. and a comb for their greasy hair,,lol How about a soda fountain look, with barstools and drive-in window,, or girls on rollerskates with trays like the a&w where the guys brought their hot cars to show off.

Have a skirt for the float that matches the auto repair sign colors (if there are any major colors). Instead of spending alot on fancy plastic skirts what you can do is go to any party store that has plastic table cloth on a roll (usually comes in 50-100 ft) and buy that, bartzs has it for $15 or so and comes in a lot of colors.

I do like the idea for the large tools, but instead of just painting them in the basic matching color use matalic or glitter paint.

Have late 60's music playing from a boom box or sound system.

You can always add ballons for an added pop in the colors of the repair shop but maybe mix in a few mettalic ones, that will grab attention.

Could do stremers drapped around the cars, like they do to bikes. Tie onto the mirrors and wheels, they will move with the wind or the float to grab attention.

Are you allowed to throw candy... that will add some pow because a lot of people like free candy. If you are handing out a flyer with a discount coupon... maybe tape a sucker or tootsie roll to the flyer, at least then people will look at the flyer to take the candy off, oh and look a coupon.

It seems that in 1968 a lot of float pictures I find were decorated with peace signs, red white and blue colors, and happy people riding them.
