Question About Endometrial Ablation

I've had a very heavy menstrual cycle since I was a teen. It is controlled while on the pill; however I am not interested in going back on the pill. (My hubby has a vesectomy.) Another option is endometrial ablation. I'm seriously considering the procedure, but I'm just wondering if anyone has had the procedure or know if knows someone who has had the procedure and what the outcome was.

What can I do next?

I have known 2 people that had endometrosis. One was told that she needed to get pregnant early so she did and that took care of the problem. (weird!)
The other friend had that surgery. She said that it was alot of scare tissue trying to take over her female organs and caused her lots of pain and heavy periods. She says she is fine now. A little cramping sometimes but that is all.
That is all that I can tell you. I wish i knew more.

Hey J.,

I has this procedure done two years ago this month. I had horrible periods and cysts. I have not had a period in two years and the recovery was over the weekend. I had the procedure as outpatient on a Thurs and went back to work on Monday. They did put me to sleep but only for 15 minutes.

Good Luck!

Hi J.-

Thanks so much for asking this question. My sister in law in trying to decide if she should do this. She really should have done it years ago. Her periods make her so miserable, and now her daughter just went on the pill for the same reason.

I will pass on the info!

Hi J.,

I haven't had the procedure done, but I have had a friend who had it done for other reasons. Basically you will be burning your uterine wall causing scar tissue to form. If you were to ever get pregnant the baby wouldn't be able to attach himself/herself to your uterine wall. I don't know how long this procedure has been around, but it seems to me to be fairly new. I'm not sure Doctors know what type of long term affects it can have on a woman's body to have their uterus "burned out".
I have had heavy periods as well. My GYN suggested taking advil the first day I start my period. This helps it not be as heavy.
Hope this helps!
God bless,

I had the same problem two years ago. I had the endometrial ablation and my tubes tied. The relief lasted about a year and then I had to have a hysterectomy last summer. There wasn't much recovery from the 1st procedure but if I had to do it again I would have had the hysterectomy to begin with.

Hi I have had this procedure done then I ended up having a partial hysterectomy cause it didn't correct the problem and 8 months after the partial hysterectomy the bleeding became worst and I ended up with a total hysterectomy. It has been 11 years since my hysterectomy and I am 37 years old now. The hormone replacement doesn't work so I suffer still with the hot flashes. I would say to try this procedure because everyones body is different but don't be surprised if the results turn out like mine. Good Luck.

I also suffered from heavy periods & painful cramps since I was a teen. After having my first child, I decided to get a Mirena IUD instead of going back on the pill. The pill was giving me high blood pressure. The IUD lasts for 5 years. I've been on it since March of this year, and I really don't have periods (I had some spotting back in August) and especially NO cramping.

I had this done 2 years ago and it is the best thing that ever happened. My mother had a condition called adenomyosis (remotely similar to endometriosis) I was having the same symptome. My GYN MD asked me to try this before we jumped to hysterectomy.
Most people have immediate results. I had little bleeding but still had the pain symptoms. After about 6 months the pain is controlled I very seldom have to take anything at all for pain and I have no bleeding. Since I am 47 I may never have another period.
I reccomend it to anyone if your MD feels it is an option. I have friends who had immediate response and feel the same way I do.

Blessing to you!

After 3 children by C-section my cycles became heavier and longer. For a year they were 25 days long at a time~making my iron very low. I opted to do the Endometrial Ablation. I have been very happy with it. I was warned that a % of women will stop having cycles all together which was fine with me. I am now have a 3 day max cycle that is lighter than ever imaginable.

I was very please with the results compared to the other options.

Good luck on your decision!

I am a 42 year old mother of two and a granmommy of one! I had the procedure done in May and have had GREAT results! I have had NO problems and do not have ANY heavy bleeding! I am very glad I had it done! It only took about 3 days to recover and that was mostly RESTING. NO PAIN. :)

I had it done not quite a year ago, and I am very pleased with the results. I was having extremely heavy periods - flooding through my clothes every hour, along with cramping that doubled me over, and made it almost imposible for me to walk - and my periods were coming two weeks apart.
I'm only 43, and wasn't ready to go the radical route of hysterectomy, and after the damage done to my body by Depo-Provera, I will NEVER take another hormone-based contraceptive. I was in and out of the hospital in a few hours, and had very little pain after the procedure.

I now have no periods, no PMS symptoms, nothing. And since I had no intention of ever having any more babies, it's not like I needed to keep having periods.

One of the women I work with had this procedure. It went very well for her. She no longer has any cramps or any spotting and her menstrual cycle when before she bled heavily for 10 days or more each month. It has made a huge improvement in her well being.
