Slipcovers - Worth Trying or Wrinkled Mess?

Hi Ladies,
We have a couch in our family room that is still in good nick so far as the cushions and couch itself. The upholstry, however, has seen better days. We are going to replace the couch at some point, but I am thinking about trying a slip cover. I bought one a few years ago at Sears and it was awful - it looked like a dropcloth a house painter would use - but I am wondering if I might have better luck if I found something of good quality. I just don't want a bunched up wrinkled mess. Has anyone found any that look halfway decent? Is it worth spending $100 for a cover?

What can I do next?

You need to have it fitted to your couch OR use/create something to give it weight to keep it in place.

Here is a good list of how to keep it in place.

Depends, how much was the sofa worth, how much will the replacement run, and what sort of life span are you hoping for out of the slip cover???

We have IKEA furniture. All of our upholstered pieces are slip covered. They were purpose made and fit very nicely, no bunching, tugging or wrinkles. We put them through the washer about 3x a year. We've had the furniture for 6 years now and it looks as fresh as when we first bought it.

You might be better off in the long run just buying an inexpensive slip covered sofa from IKEA now, esp if this is for the family room.

good luck to you and yours,
F. B.

You probably won't get a decent one for less than $100. Yes, for a family room, it's worth it, imo. Most family rooms don't have to have amazing decor.

About 15 years ago, a slipcover on a favorite (but very shabby) chair gave it new life -- and gave me time to save for a replacement. I've seen the kind that just look like a big piece of not-very-good fabric with fringe around the edge. Put the extra money and a little extra time into finding a decent one. You'll be glad you did. I think Sure Fit was the brand I liked (but it's been a while).

We have custom ones that fit our sofa and chair perfectly. Totally worth it.
