Steam Mops - Rochester, MI

I have hardwood floors throughout my house and tile in the kitchen. My daughter is 8-months-old and starting to explore, with 3 dogs and a cat it's pretty hard to keep the floors clean. I had been using vinegar and water (the old mop and bucket routine) but a co-worker suggested a steam mop. It's down to the Bissell or the Shark Deluxe, does anyone have any experience with either of these or a better suggestion altogether?? I want a clean house but I also want to spend as much time as possible playing with my baby.

What can I do next?

I have hardwood floors and tile in the kitchen also. I love my Sharp Steamer. It is very quick, easy to change the pads and the floors are clean so my granddaughter can crawl around even though we have cats in the home. I am so glad I bought the Sharp it cuts down the clean up time and I can enjoy the rest of my day.

Cinderella mopping is my favorite (and most efficient) but I recently purchased the shark deluxe and love it. Friends that have the regular version aren't as sold, but the deluxe seems to be sturdier, plus longer cord, etc. My youngest is crawling and I love that the floors are dry before he can chase me down. The carpet attachment makes the carpets look like they were just cleaned. I think it was a great buy. I use it almost every day for a quick touch up somewhere in the house. I too have hardwoods and tile, plus I use the carpet attachment for all the rugs. Good luck!

I have no experieince with the Bissell, but I have the Shark Deluxe and love it. You can buy it at Bed Bath and Beyond for $80 with the coupon. they also carry the extra mop fabric heads, that are washable. I've had mine for 1 year and mop 2-3 times per week, now. I didn';t have a clean floor before, but I got it because of my small children. I will say, my floor was so dirty, that I had to relaly clean the floor so this steam mop would do the maintenance, but it sounds like your floor is already pretty clean. I've seen it at Costco, too, but haven't looked at the price there as I already had mine. Good luck, it's a smart choice! I've actually saved moeny by not having to buy the sponge refills at $6 a pop!!!

I have had the shark steam mop for a year next month, and love it, 2 kids, 2 dogs, and a husband who lacks the skills of taking off his shoes when coming in from the outside! I do use the swiffer at times for spills, as I too have hardwood and tiled floors throughout our tri level home.

I used the shark steam mop for over year and liked it. However, a few weeks ago, I plugged it in; let it heat up; went to create the steam and loud pop occurred. When my husband took it apart, all the inside hoses popped and things were carroded. We do have hard water and that may have helped the result. I will not purchase another one unless I get the company to tell me how not to have it happen again. I do not wish to spend $100.00 every year.

I bought the Shark, hoping to steer my family away from chemicals too. I used it on the floor, waited for it to dry, and then went over it with my Swiffer, and the Swiffer STILL got stuff up off the floor. So, needless to say, the mop went back. Great idea, not so great a cleaner. Was really bummed out over it...

Something to think about, you really don't want a perfectly clean house because those germs your 8-month-old picks up off the floor will help her body learn how to deal with infections and bacteria. Yes, mopping once a day in the traffic areas is necessary, but sterilizing the floor on a daily basis is not a good idea.

Also, you may strip the varnish or protective barrier off of your wood flooring if you use a high heat cleaning product.

Have a great day!

I have had the Bissel steam mop for approx. 6 months. I got it at Walmart online for $80($1 shipping or you can do store to store for free). I love it. No more buckets, no more chemicals. The chemicals is a big thing since I have a daughter with asthma. It does take a little getting used to...needing an electrical outlet and you have to mop a little slower so it does take a little longer. It does a very good job cleaning. Mopheads are washable (comes with 2).

Although a steam mop would be good for tile/vinyl, I would think a steam mop would damage hardwood floors.

I use an organic base soap called Basic H2. Multi purposes and it works amazing! Since it is organic, no need to worry about your daughter crawling on the floors and inhaling harmful chemicals.

I would be careful using a steam mop on your hard wood floors. I just had my professional re sanded and the man that did told me to only mop the floors with mini wax hardwood floor cleaner and only occasionally. He said to sweep them with a dust mop and that will take all the dirt off of them. Water is not good for the wood floor and I would be a afraid that hot water would take off the finish. I would check with a specialist before I would do something like that...

Have you ever heard of Melaleuca products? They are toxin free and they clean VERY well. They have all household products from toothpaste to floor cleaner and everything in between. Their cleaning products don't even have safety caps because they are practically safe to drink! This is coming from a total OCD housekeeper that is used to bleaching everything!! I love this company, send me a message if you would like more info. A.
