So. We met with an ENT who recommended tubes for my two year old daughter. I was not nervous initially because I know that this is the right move for her (her hearing and speech have been affected) but as the day draws near...I am getting anxious. Can anyone offer any reassurance/tips on how to calm my nerves/ fears until Tuesday?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, everyone. The procedure was this morning and it went very well. She was back to herself within a few hours and is already talking up a storm. So glad we did it! Children's Memorial is a great facility. Thanks, again!

My son had a little drink before him to calm him down, they took him for about 15 minutes. In recovery he was a little groggy - like he got woken up from his nap early. After we got home, you never would have known he had anything done. It's quick and easy (once you are there). You wouldn't believe the difference those tiny little things make!

My son had it when he was about 14 months old, and it changed everything! I knew he needed it done, but I will admit, when they carried him down to the procedure, I felt so bad! I had all the typical fears..."what if something happens?" Thiings like that....

He was just fine.... he was back maybe 20 minutes later, and then woke up shortly after that.

He started walking a week after the surgery, too.

He still had some ear infections after the surgery, but for him, once they put him on a nasal spray, it really helped a bunch. Now, at 20, he is 6 ft tall, and has not hardly had an ear infection in the years between.

My grandson (at 5 months) went through what sounds like a horrendous surgery... but really, this one is so easy! Very little pain, very short surgery. This procedure is so quick and easy, really.

It is really no big deal. They go in for a few minutes and then come out. When they are coming out of the anesthesia they can be disoriented and scared but if you hold her and snuggle her for the first 30 minutes or so she should already be clearing the meds and back to normal shortly.

Our little guy came out of it screaming like a banshee, he was totally freaked. They told me this is common and not even something the kids remember.

We left shortly after he woke up and my hubby sat with him in his lap until we got to the pharmacy. By the time the scrip was in the car he was almost normal and wanted to go to McDonalds.

So, anything they have as a side effect from the surgery will only last about 30 minutes to an hour. Just treat them like it is nothing so they don't get the idea it's a big deal. Don't feel guilty, it's necessary or she could go deaf.

You're doing the right thing! Breathe easy knowing that :)

Your daughter could have a lot of trouble and struggle in the long run if you weren't getting this done now, so be proud of yourself for making the right decision!!

Good luck on Tuesday :) Get ready with tylenol and ice pops on hand to make that baby happy! It's not a tough recovery, my BFF's daughter had it done, she said it was about 1 full day of cranky baby (the day of), then after that, everything was a cake walk! Best wishes :)

My little guy had it done and it made such a difference. One day he had the tubes put in and the next day he started walking!! He is a very healthy boy now and at the time we were on public assistance and they did not approve the procedure and then after we got different insurance and had it done and it improved just about everything.

She is going to do great. This is going to help her soo much..
My husband was so reluctant to approve this procedure we let it go on too long. Once we realized how much hearing loss she had suffered.. I told him to get it together, because she was having the procedure.. They also took out her adenoids.

Our daughter was fine.. my husband was given a Valium and his mother went and sat with him the entire time.. Good Grief..

It changed our lives. Our daughter was ill less often. She slept so much better and her vocabulary once again took off. I still kick myself for not approving it when it was first suggested.. But live and learn.

I am thankful we did that for my son. He had persistent ear infection that wouldn't go. No medication helped. This went on for 6 months. Finally, we put tubes in when he was about 18 months old. The doctor said that it was a 5 minute surgery. It took 15 minutes for him because it was so bad. But, he has not had an infection after that, knock on wood! He is 6 now.

I have had numerous daycare kids get tubes and the parents were of course worried but all were happily surprised that literally an hour after the surgery the kid was 100% back to normal.

my daughter just got tubes a month a go its very nerve racking not knowing what to expect. they gave her some medicine to soothe her before they put her out. she watched a little tv while it took affect. that way they dont fight when putting them under. it was about 20 minutes for the surgery but seemed for ever in recovery bc she didnt want to drink anything ( had adenoid surgery too) but she fell asleep after we left and when we got home you had no idea she had surgery. Its not really scary the dr told us to just forget it even happened. She was cranky after the surgery for about 15 minutes as the anesteshia wore off and bc she so despratly wanted to go home.

The best thing we EVER did for our little girl! She was almost 2 years old and is 7 years old now. She hasn't had one ear infection since! Ever since she got her from China she had one ear infection after another. (Probably had a lot in the orphanage - all the girls before we left China where sick.) Her Dr. wanted to wait a little longer. Called him one night when she was screaming from an ear infection the Dr. immediately scheduled the surgery. I was nervous too. I could tell you that it is a very common surgery, but she is your precious baby.

We had a great ENT and the surgery was nothing compared to what it was in my mind before hand. My son was a little disorientated after he woke up and cried a little (he was 18 mos old) which is understandable. But he was literally playing, eating, and drinking like nothing had happened by that afternoon. I think it's normal to be anxious, but don't worry. The benefits are SO worth it!

Best thing that EVER happened for our daughter. She was like a completely different, much happier, child after the procedure, which took less than 15 minutes. It is normal to worry, but is really is a good thing. Prayers for your family.

We had this done in May for our 15 month old. She had continuous ear infections for 6 months and antibiotics would not work. While the tubes did help somewhat we still had problems, until I figured out the under lying cause was an allergy to dairy. It took my persistence to figure this out.

Now she did have some scar tissue that grew over one of the tubes and had to have that cut away, but that is not common. The biggest thing I regret is not figuring out the allergy before hand as I don't think she would have needed the tubes. My daughter loves the water and we wanted to get her into swimming this summer but she couldn't because of the tubes in her ears. I can't wait for them to fall out so she can go swimming.

My ds got tubes in August. He was almost 9mos old and had been dealing with an 8mos ear infection, poor baby. I was also nervous, but he did great! It was not a heavy duty sedation and it was literally like five minutes. Amazing! And what a huge difference we've seen. I totally get the nerves, but know you're doing the right thing and your dd is going to feel so much better and you'll see improvement with speech, etc. I couldn't believe the difference. He all of a sudden started babbling more and crawling...he had trouble with balance. Hang in there! Deep breath. All will be fine. :o)

I always felt that the "waiting was the hardest part". They will give her a "drink" to make her sleepy and by the time they take her out of your arms, she could care less. It's a quick procedure and literally saved my daughter's hearing and speech. Keep an eye on her because we thought we were in the clear, but processing problems popped up when she was about 4 and we didn't really grasp the need to work with a speech therapist until she was 5. At 9, we are still playing catch up. She might be more sensitive to sounds the first few weeks, so keep her away from loud events etc. With in 24 hours, you won't even remember she had the surgery!

I (as an adult) had tubes put in a few years ago and I was nervous too. My friends little guy (16 months) had the procedure done the day before me and my friend reassured me that everything was gonna be fine. Let me tell you, the procedure is quick and there is absolutely NO pain involved in the surgery. Really, the hardest part is that you do feel a little weird waking up. Also, the relief that she will feel when she can hear again and she doesn't have the pain of a reoccurring ear infection (which for me was comparable to child birth) is well worth it!! Since my surgery, the tubes have since come out but I tell everyone that I would have that surgery again and again if it meant that I wouldn't be in pain anymore and so that I could hear. Hang in there, your anxious because this is your little girl. I promise she will be a new girl when she gets the tubes! Your doing the right thing!
