Wedding Soloists (For Singers & Non-singers to Address)

I have been kicking around the idea of doing some freelance wedding solist work, but need input on songs to include in my repertoire:

Standards that I already do (off the top of my head):
Ave Maria (Schubert)
Ave Maria (Gounod)
Panis Angelicus (Frank)
The Prayer (Think Celine Dion/Josh Groban duet - obviously I'd need to find a baritone for it)
Hymns like "On Eagle's Wings"

All of my singing experience at weddings has been for Catholic weddings, so I am not sure what else to include--I'd be looking to do Catholic, Protestant & civil weddings. Any suggestions?

Any singers out there do freelance wedding singing?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Haha, Luna, you are absolutely right about arias, country love songs, and especially Pie Jesu :-) While I love that song, and to sing it in the shower, not very romantic--maybe I'll save it for a divorce party ;-)

I have an extensive background in music (vocal performance), and while I was in college I did a lot of solo work (some for weddings). The bride always gave me the music to her song choice; sometimes I knew it, other times I didn't. They didn't usually ask for a foreign language aria, but it wouldn't have been a problem if they did. To be perfectly honest, maybe you could brush up on some country romance hits...? The majority of the weddings I've been to and sung at have had songs by Rascal Flatts, Leann Rimes, etc. Some are in the pop genre too, especially for younger people getting married.

For weddings, I'd generally stay away from a Pie Jesu....They can be very very beautiful, I've sung many myself, but they are in requiems, and often sung as solos at funerals. The lyrics ask for granting peace and everlasting rest..Not really marriage material.

Sounds like fun! Good luck!

Okay, okay! My Pie Jesu didn't fly! I've done it in concert many times, and the audiences loved it, but I forgot it was from a requiem. You're right! But DO sing it somewhere other than the shower! It's a lovely piece, especially if you have a cellist duet with you! Smiles!!

Original:
Look up the song "Grace" that has the words to Amazing Grace, but a different melody. It's beautiful.

I have done "A Simple Song" from Bernstein's Mass - not an easy piece and for couples who like less simple music for their wedding.

Also take a look at Pie Jesu by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Go to You Tube and put wedding songs into search. The 'Wedding Song' by Paul Stokey (Paul of Peater Paul and Mary) is beautiful.
others
The Hawaiian Wedding Song -- You are So Beautiful -- Turn Around (Kingston Trio) -- Annie's Song (John Denver) -- There are so many I can't think of any more.

I had my wedding singers (my sister's best friend and my uncle) sing I'll Walk with God while guests were being seated. While our Mom's (and us) were lighting the Unity candle my uncle sang The Lord's Prayer.

You're gonna need some low brow stuff for the rest of us! A friend of mine had Celine Dions - Because You Loved Me sang as a gift to her parents at her wedding. Not a dry eye in the house. Also Mariah Carey has a lot of beautiful ove songs, Endless Love, All I've Ever Wanted, the list goes on. I love when people do the Sinead Oconner song - Nothing Compares to You.
